does wifi waste or what?

i downloaded the app wifi ruler which automatically turns your wifi on when youre within range of a hotspot and shuts it off when youre out of range and was wondering, does having wifi turned on for extended periods waste battery life?

Yes DI18 improved the wifi idle where before if I forgot to turn off mobile AP it would drain 60% of the batter over night..now if I got mobileAP on over night it drains like 10%..but it still drains extra battery then when its off...

But then again if it jumps from multiple hotspots that might drain energy(as its not idling).unless its smart enough not to do it while phone is off.

never did get AP to work but juice defender controled the evening/late night turn on.

To be honest I find using wifi to be better for battery life than using 3g. But that could be because of poor 3G signal at my home.
