Well this started out as a tutorial and I figured I could probably simplify a little more so I built this little app to help. This is problem one of the simplest methods to rooting and unrooting your Epic Touch 4G. In this thread I will show you how to root your Sprint Samsung Epic Touch 4G / Galaxy S2 / SPH-D710 EL29, get ClockWork Mod Recovery (CWM) for creating backups and flashing custom roms, unroot and more! I hope you find this helpful!

Notes:

• Dump Logcat Log currently doesn't work.
• Extras tab will work with any android device.

How to root your Epic Touch 4G on EL29.
*This method saves user-data and does NOT format it.*

1. Go ahead and extract the Epic Touch 4G Toolkit anywhere you like.

2. Install the Samsung Epic Touch 4G Driver from the kit if you haven't already done this before.

3. Put your device into Download Mode leaving it unplugged from PC. With the phone off, press and hold volume down and power to power the device on holding until it powers on. You will get a warning about custom OS issues, just press volume up to bypass this. Your device screen should look like this image below.




4. Run EpicTouch4G_Toolkit.exe and then click "Root My Epic Touch 4G" under the root tab. This will launch the Odin OneClick root method. After Odin starts, plug your phone into your PC, letting the drivers install completely. If all is well Odin should should have a yellow box with 0:[COM#] and the screen will look like below. Note: the COM# does not matter as long as its yellow and has one.





5. Click Start, let it do it's work(this could take several minutes to do, so don't get scared, let it work) and you should get a PASS! message in Odin letting you things went alright. If so your phone should reboot and it will be back rooted and ready for wireless tether! If you want to try custom roms, kernels and etc...then proceed to the tutorial below to get CWM Recovery.

How to Install ClockWork Mod (CWM) Recovery on your Epic Touch 4G EL29.

1. With phone booted go to Menu/Settings/Applications/Development and check USB Debugging. You also wanna make sure you don't enable usb mass storage.



2. Run EpicTouch4G_Toolkit.exe and then click "Install CWM Recovery" under the root tab while the phone is booted on and plugged into the PC. If all goes well your device will reboot and you will have a "Android Boot Animation". This confirms that CWM was successful. You can enter recovery by two ways. One click the "Extras" tab while your phone is plugged into the pc. Or power down the phone, press volume up and power on at the same time, this will also boot you into CWM Recovery.

How to unroot your Epic Touch 4G and get it back to stock.
*This method saves user-data and does NOT format it.*

1. Put your device into Download Mode leaving it unplugged from PC. With the phone off, press and hold volume down and power to power the device on holding until it powers on. You will get a warning about custom OS issues, just press volume up to bypass this. Your device screen should look like this image below.



2. Run EpicTouch4G_Toolkit.exe click Unroot tab and then click "Back to Stock Rooted". This will launch the Odin OneClick root method. After it starts, plug your phone into your PC, letting the drivers install completely. If all is well Odin should should have a yellow box with 0:[COM#] and the screen will look like below. Note: the COM# does not matter as long as its yellow and has one.





3. Click Start, let it do it's work(this could take several minutes to do, so don't get scared, let it work) and you should get a PASS! message in Odin letting you things went alright. If so your phone should reboot and it will be back at stock rooted state Now we must remove the root files.



4. Once your phone has rebooted and USB Debugging is enabled go ahead and click the Unroot tab and click "Unroot My Epic Touch 4G". Let it remove the root files, this shouldn't take to long and your device will reboot when it's done. Your device is now fully unrooted and back to stock condition!

idk how old this post is but thanks man, makes me feel like a genius to be able to do something like this seeing how im not very smart haha, THANKS A LOT, ANY CUSTOM ROMS or INFO you can give me to make my phone faster or battery last longer, ive got super user and root exp so i could delete some of the bs that comes on there like sprint nascar and stuff, yea tho thanks again.

Could not get this to open. Lists "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Will try on a different PC. This one is Win XP SP3.
