CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Do you think, as a group, we could create our own custom Operating System? Something other than WM? Just a theory... But with the amount of intelligent coders, software engineers, and PPC Geeks on this site, it should be possible.. And if we got XDA involved, the sky could be the limit..

i was thinkin the same thing a few days ago

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
I really think it could be possible... I personally have NO coding skills, and am only starting to develop an understanding of how a PPC works.. But if people can create code for their own custom ROM's, or create ways to create new icon's, anything should be possible.. I may not be able to code, but I would be willing to donate time and effort into what I can do, and I know monetary contributions are always willingly accepted...

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Now this would be interesting, would gladly donate toward that idea.

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
So... Anybody know where to start?

To test and donate, I agree... Who here on this site knows of such coding?

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
I'm new here to the forums and ppc's but i'll put in my opinion. Making a full OS is a huge undertaking, especially one that would hold up to your large standards. Not to mention this would require every program you guys typically install to be coded especially for this new os, and to top it all off i'm not sure you could get all your sprint services working since they where made for windows.
To make your own os for a phone in itself isnt the biggest callenge its making one able to outpreform windows in speed and functionality. People get microsoft alot of flack, but they got alot of smart people and money behind these products. Personally i'd be interested in how heavyly someone can mod window and prehaps work on our own interface like touch flo to hide windows. for instance in windows on a desktop you can stop windows from loading explorer (not the web browser, the one that handles windows and the start menu) and run your own application instead. in this way you have all the api, and library of windows already set up, but the only interface us the one you coded. Also, again i dont know much about ce, but it may save alot of memory turning off the window manager. |
Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Good opinion Rashire... What you said made me think about it some more... An intuitive interface would be a much better way to go than a complete over haul of the OS code..

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Huh, this sounds really cool. I'd help with whatever I can, though I don't know if it'd be anything besides donations/testing :p

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
LOL..seriously

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Still a good idea though.. Maybe take some Android source code...

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Does anybody know any good resources for creating a custom GUI that will pretty much disable the WM interface even if you hit the End key? The reason that I ask is that I have played with many different UIs like PointUI and such but they all are killed when you hit the End Key. I think that would be the only thing that would kill a project like this if there is no way to fully take over the interface. Like many have said, WM is fast and very open to programming but the UI is very atrocious and not touch friendly. I believe if we got enough volunteers to handle different parts of the UI like the Dialer, Contacts, Home Screen, Media Player or etc that we would have a golden egg that would beat the Android UI or even Apple's.

I won't knock it if anyone is willing to try, but this would be a huge task. There are some good programmers around here but starting from scratch is a big job.
I like the idea of starting with Android and building upon that. There should be a lot of possibilities there. |
Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Hopefully we can get a software heavy weight in here to comment on this..

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
Well, lets try this then. Why dont we pitch in ideas or concepts that we believe would make a great UI with different features or programs that would be very useful to have. Regardless if its a new UI for Android or WM or maybe even both, lets get together and start designing and posting pictures of some concepts. I figure that when time goes on, some programmers will get interested in helping and some of us with start learning how to do this. First off, what should we call this UI? WM Ultimate, Diesel Interface, WM Platinum, etc.

I just create this thread for discussion about a custom user interface... That was a great idea Tall...

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
How about a nice flavor of linux geared towards the 6800 series... i have one for the PPC6700 from sprint, but its not 100% functional on the 6800 as of yet. I no longer have a 6700 so i have to use the emulator, but i have the HTC Mogul and currently am working on a linux based distro for it. Any suggestions as to what to put in above and beyond the basics?

Re: CUSTOM OS~ Not Windows Mobile
as far as linux distros, i think developers are more focused on the vx6850 raphael due to the better hardware and such.
