Diablo?

So I was thinking about games and this came to mind...
I used to play diablo on my pentium 100mhz. It's default resolution is 640x480, but it has a low-res mode of 320x240 (native winmo anyone?).
Why couldn't it work on a winmo setup?

Re: Diablo?

Id love to see someone port this. I wonder how difficult it would be to do.

CyberMonkey 08-19-2008 02:40 PM

Re: Diablo?

The porting might not be difficult, but the controls may be a bit hard for it to be feasible to play on a mobile device.

Re: Diablo?

Why? The whole game is just point and click.

psiphi 08-19-2008 04:13 PM

Re: Diablo?

It will run under Wine (if I recall correctly) so you might be able to do it using one of the PPC Linux ports.... It would be an awful lot of trouble to set up though... (I'd still like to see it)

Re: Diablo?

Any volunteers? I'd pay $50 for it.

Well for example in the first Diablo when items drop there is no nifty press ALT to have it labeled, you have to search the floor with your mouse until it goes over it.
On a PPC how would that work?

Bind a button on the PPC to ALT and bind another button to switching skills and your golden.

that won't work for ALT, in the first Diablo you could NOT press ALT to see what was on the ground.
You had to hover the curser over the item on the ground to see what it was, and if there items dropped......

not the end of the world. it's not exactly game breaking.

Re: Diablo?

so who's going to (wo)man up and do it?

I too, would pay money for a port.

heck, I want a port of a game from like '90 called Carrier Command. It is a DOS game that fits on a floppy, so it could probably be ported easily.

You should try DOSBox...

In asking about ALT...
There are enough qwerty phones that it shouldn't be an issue, anyway.

that won't help with the first Diablo. Using the ALT key to see the items on the ground was not a function in the first Diablo. You had to mouse over items on the ground to find them and see what they were.

Re: Diablo?

I read an article about using Bochs within winmo. You should even be able to install win95 if you want and run diablo within it.

There is a PPC game called Ancient Evil (See attached screenshot) which is very similar to Diablo.
Here is the link for a review: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/games/ancient_evil.htm
There is a free trial available from Clickgamer.

Check out "Machines at War" in the "Games Games Games" thread(sorry, I'm mobile, can't post link). It's in the game2.zip file in post #5. It's an RTS game as well.

Re: Diablo?

Ummm...
RTS is real-time strategy.
RPG is role-playing game.

This release is an initial Beta test release. I know there are probably some issues, and I definitely know there is some content missing. It's really just for you guys to see how it's going.
Download Pocket Diablo v1.0.
All you need to do is copy the folder in the zip file onto your ppc (anywhere you like), then copy the diabloui.dll file from the Diablo CD into the 'Diablo' folder.
This is just to make sure you actually own a copy of Diablo. If you don't, why the hell not?

You might get an error, saying you need a newer version of the .net framework to version 2.
If you need the cab file, you can download it here

If you get any errors, please report them on my forum so I can deal with them.
But please read the list of errors that I have already posted first, so you know if they are already being dealt with!

Enjoy!

Instructions
The game is mostly stylus controlled. Click on a monster to attack, click on a blank square to move there, etc.

If you press the button in the middle of your keypad (or the enter key) will toggle you between attack only mode and move/attack mode. In attack mode, you will not move, you will just swing / shoot in whatever direction you click.

Clicking on the inv / char buttons will open the inv / char screens (duh). Clicking on the inv / char buttons again will close the screens.

When the menu screen is up (save / load / quit) clicking outside the menu section (basically anywhere except one of the options) will close the screen.

You can only move potions into your quick item slots when in the inv screen. Clicking on the quick slots while in game will use the potion.

I have coded this to run under 640 x 480 as well as 320 x 240, but I haven't been able to test 640 x 480. It should work, but I'm sure there will be problems. If you let me know what they are (with as much description as possible please) then I'll try and fix them.

Re: Diablo?

1/4 screen
Open the config file and change the 3rd option from 1 to 2
That *should* change it to 640 * 480
I'm sure there will be issues in there somewhere, but hopefully it will mostly work.

Re: Diablo?

Has anyone managed to get this working on a Touch Pro?

I tried multiple things, but always get the following error:

Error
-An unexpected error has occurred in PDiablo.exe. Select Quit and then restart this program, or select Details for more information.
-An error message cannot be displayed because an optional resource assembly containing it cannot be found.

PDiablo.exe
DirectoryNotFoundException

at System.IO.*** and the list goes on. I have tried putting it on the Storage Card\Diablo just as mentioned above to no avail.

If this isn't working for you, maybe you have a patched copy of the original DLL. See if using the original DLL from the disc makes any difference.

Re: Diablo?

Actually i figured I'd redownload it being that I seen a different file name for the archive. I realized the place where I originally downloaded it only had 26MB, and the one from the homepage is like 32MB so I re-retrieved it from there and have it unarchiving on my cell now. I will try then and see what happens.

When looking at the image file directories I thought it sucked that the sorceror was taken out, but figured the bigger file might have him. Now that it's extracting, I noticed he IS in fact inside which is the main char I always played with anyways. I'll let you know how it goes once done, thanks.

ProtoProtoss 05-13-2009 09:24 AM

Re: Diablo?

I managed to get it working kinda.... when it starts up the char keeps walking on his own (unless it's supposed to do that for testing). Onside that, the screen often comes up blank where you can only see the progress bar, then graphics kick in like a few seconds later, and selecting the Sorceror crashes it.

Re: Diablo?

"This release is only a beta (and an early beta at that!)
More just proof of concept really."

Controls:
Yeah, I know the controls are a little finicky. They need to be tightened up.
Rogue is definitely the easiest at the moment.
When you are using the warrior, try pressing your keypad button (or enter button) and that will change you into attack only mode.
When in attack only mode, you will swing/fire in the direction you click and not move.
Makes attacking much easier.

This is great! I will test as soon as I can find my Diablo CD... :( (Has it been 10 years?)

I successfully used the Diabloui.dll from the shareware spawn copy of Diablo.

Cool...
People that have the battle chest are saying that it's in incompatible version. The guy porting the game will be working on getting 1.09 to work.

Re: Diablo?

I got this working on my Diamond, but there are issues. I used to love this game though, so I'm sticking with it for a while. Starting a new game just sticks me in the dungeon with no weapons and no health, should I delete one of the save files? Also it seems like the character walks below the screen and can't be seen.

Re: Diablo?

hmm now if we could get starcraft to work, Starcraft runs at 640*480 resolution aswell control scheme would need some reworking though

Can't wait for Diablo III. That is my most anticipated game right now.

As for the wife... get the LAN kicking and have her make a character. :D

True...
I just wish it wasn't so gross-looking. What happened to good, clean, hack-n-slash? That's one thing that I liked about Titan Quest. You could kill all day long and it wasn't disturbing.

Oh, what it would be like to have a wife that would run with you. Mine will play against me all day long in Pocket Fighters, but won't pick up a mouse for an rpg.
