What should I do?

My contract with Verizon is up and I want out. Their phone selection is a joke, not to mention anemic when it comes to memory and features, that are either left off or locked down. I am really looking at the Touch Pro or Diamond and possibly moving to Sprint or AT&T - their coverage in my area is comparable as is their monthly cost, and have a few questions:

Should I really just hobble along month-to-month on my 700w and wait for the Touch Pro 2 to come out? Honestly, with all the delays in releasing new devices who really knows when that'll be?

Since I love the one-handed operation of the Treo, is the on-screen keyboard of the Diamond decent? Or should just get the slider (Touch Pro)? I have used a Tilt before from a friend for a few weeks, and found was bearable, and I just had to get used to it. So a slider isn't all that rough and I do like having a physical keyboard.

I am not considering the Treo 800w (EOL soon), nor the Treo Pro as I want a screen bigger then 320x320, and am willing to sacrifice the front-facing keyboard design to get that.

Thanks, and if this is posted in the wrong forum area, feel free to move.

Go to Sprint and get the Touch Pro.

If you are staying with any CDMA providers like Sprint or VZW, Touch Pro 2 most likely won't be a reality as HTC mentioned that it's a GSM only FOR NOW. Of course you can wait for they release a CDMA version of TP2 but by then, the TP3 would be out and... you get the story.

As for going GSM? Well you can wait, but I am not sure when it'll be out for the N. America releases.

What is your top factor for choosing a provider? Price? Coverage? Plans? Do give us some info so we can help you out.

I guess really my top factor is device selection and control. I want to be able to use GPS on Google Maps, I may want to be able to install custom ROM's (hence moving to an HTC device) which I guess is more of a carrier-agnostic factor. Like I said, looking at both AT&T and Sprint they are pretty much 69.99 with 450 minutes + data, and AT&T gives you the rollover.

I think ATT uses GSM right? That being the case, if other things are equal to you, I'd go with ATT. That way if you have more choices in the phones you can get (though you would not get the rebate). Are you sure their internet speeds are both the same where you are?

Then go with AT&T, any GSM provider will give you more selection compare to CDMA at any given date.

Excellent points - but you have to admit Sprint does do an excellent job of getting their hands on a lot of different devices (VZW is not even in the same league with them).

Thanks for your input - I appreciate the help!

You should keep in mind that even though the Touch Pro 2 will be out for GSM before its CDMA counterpart, the GSM frequencies may not be compatible with AT&T's 3G (HSDPA). You'd essentially have a really high-end phone, but it will be limited to EDGE.

Looking back, the first 3G Touch Pro for the US market was Sprint's (CDMA). Sure, you could've bought the European/Asian GSM version, but it kind of undermines the whole idea of having an internet-oriented device. With the Touch Pro 2, this holds even more true given its relatively gigantic screen. If you go with AT&T, you're basically crossing your fingers in hopes that they have the 3G version of the Touch Pro 2 before anyone else, which is not a good assumption given the first Touch Pro's history.
