Help Me Decide On a new Platform

Like it says. I'm looking to invest in a new smartphone. I am fairly new to this forum and modifying in general, actually call me duuuumb. But I've been messing around with my old palm treo for a couple months now and have the bug.

What I need is a suggestion on what platform to start with. I like the look of the evo, maybe the samsung epic, but am a rookie.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be Android, froyo which is 2.2? seems to be the one to go for.

I want a solid platform that I can modify easily, unlock easily because I live in Canada. And something that will last me a long time and keep me up late every night screwing around with it even once I have it perfect!!!

I think I'm set on an htc but convince me please!

REMEMBER, I'M A ROOKIE, SPEAK LIKE I'M IN KINDERGARTEN.

Thanks for your efforts.

little more user info would help, work phone/toy to tweak ect. i had a evo and liked it but i was tired of htc/sense so i jumped to the epic and whole new look of touchwiz and im very happy. i liked evo cause it bigger and it was a good phone too but epic seems faster and superA screen just looks great. shift i had i hated and thats really all i can say about the shift.

Ok, just a toy really. not for work. Not a fan of sliders either. Just something I can modify a lot and have fun with. All I've had is wm and really like the idea of android. Problem is I'm in Canada and my carrier is Rogers and as far as I can see they only carry 1 htc phone, the magic, so I'd probably have to buy one unlocked to get what I like. I'll be honest, my phone I have now is a treo, I'm embarrassed to admit that I tried a data plan and it was too slow so I removed it. I'm not used to data plans, and all I use my phone now for is texting. Yes I am man enough to admit it. But I love the possibilities with the epic or evo.
You can suggest something a little older if there's a phone that I could get cheaper and get used to tweaking and fooling with.
Thanks for the reply

Umm...isn't Rogers GSM/HSPA..not CDMA..you won't be able to use neither the EVO nor the Epic on it :/

No but there's comparable models by different carriers up here.

There is no Epic anywhere other then the US...and its CDMA only...if your going for a comparable model on GSM and dont want a keyboard there is the Nexus S..which is Google's official phone..can't get any more tinkering then that :/..
