RDP (Remote Desktop Connection)

I have a Treo 800W - with Win Mobile 6.1 - Service with Sprint PCS
There is no RDP client in this version WinMobile 6.1

My quest is to find an RDP client app to install on my phone so I can log on to multiple servers (through a DNS name or through a WAN IP address.

I searched the Treo 800W posts but did not find a discussion about this feature.

This is my first post - I have read a lot of the existing posts already. Great site. I still have to learn how to install apps on my phone (I have only owned it about 2 weeks).

Real easy. Just download the .CAB file, find it using the file explorer and select it for installation.

As far as an RDP app, I haven't heard of one through this site, but there is a nice one you can find here http://palm-treo-800w.handster.com/software.php?id=1192&for=Palm+Treo+800w It is 40 bucks, but it works. If anyone can find a free one, please post.

Ever thought about trying the free logmein.com

IMO, it works wayyyyyyyyyy better than RDP ever did!

You mean the free TRIAL? I can't find a free full version. If there is one, please let me know.

Logmein has a free service too....
It's there....That's what I use.

The paid trial adds more features, but I just want the ability to log into my desktop.

I found it. Leave it to me to not see the large button in the middle of the homepage.

That's too funny!

When setting it up, just remember, your computer has to have a username and password too...

Re: RDP (Remote Desktop Connection)

Thanks to lawmangrant for the comments about logmein - I have used this software, and it is quite easy to use.

Thanks to SkipJack for the link to the RDM+ software from Handster.com - I tend to favor this software over logmein, because I support about 30 servers through the Remote Desktop Protocol. They are already setup in the routers to forward port 3389 to the server, and already setup with dynamic DNS names through DynDNS. So the $40 is an easy cash outlay to not have to reprogram all servers for logmein.

As a final note, I do not understand why Windows Mobile 6.1 would strip this app out of their Mobile OS, or not make it freely available like it is on any other OS offered by Microsoft (even all the way back to Windows 98). I will continue to look for a free RDP client, but proably lay out the cash for RDM+ if I do not have any luck with free.

Re: RDP (Remote Desktop Connection)

Ok - I searched Google for "Remote Desktop on Windows Mobile 6.1", and I found a file - WM6RDP.cab - at this location: http://andrewblock.net/?p=85 . I figured out how to copy it to my 800W Temp folder. After installing and launching it, I have a working "Remote Desktop Connection" - it is not the easiest to navigate the big screen from my Treo, but it works! And it was FREE... I am really psyched! Thanks for your encouragement. This site rocks...

Good to hear SoundFX. I will try it and compare it to logmein. Thanks for the research.

logmein is fantastic. I set it up on all my family's/relative's computers so when they need help I have instant access to it. Its so much easier than trying to walk them through the process of fixing their computer.

Re: RDP (Remote Desktop Connection)

OK - Now I have a small amount of experience with RDP on a Treo 800W -

First impression - Respone time is great, but I am connected to a wireless wifi network. I normally would just use my PC (either wired or wireless) to remote into servers. This 800W solution would be when I have no access to wired and need to use Sprint PCS to connect, or if I only have my phone at a wifi hotspot - which likely would be much slower. That is my to-do for the next couple of days - connect while on the road, and connect through an open (and unsecured) wifi. I will need to take care not to compromise any security issues on a customer server.

Second impression - good grief, that 800W screen is small. But navigating is fairly simple. I probably would never use the Full Screen mode (and only see about 1/6th of the remote computer/server. I would instead use thebottom right window that allows me to place the 800W screen anywhere on the desktop of the remote computer.

Now, to the followup questions. Sure I can look in server logs (especially in Win Server 2008), but how do I emulate the right mouse key? This is important for getting to the MMC (Microsoft management console), or to bring up Task Manager. I suppose I could create Icons for these functions on the servers, but it would be nice to emulate mouse-right-click from the 800W. Is there any site that can give you K/B equivalents of all the mouse functions, double key equivalents (like Ctrl+C or Windows Key+E) and special key functions (like PrtSc or the F keys)?

Looking forward to any responses.

If you use RealVGA it will give you better screen usage.

OK now I am responding to my question - I just found out at my local MicroCenter (Marietta, GA) that if I press and hold my stylus briefly on the icon or area where I would like to see a right-click menu, it appears. I have validated this, and it works great. I am really stoked! Thanks to all for following this thread. Let me know if any of you have duplicated my efforts, and what your experience has been.
