What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

I saw WkTask recommended earlier, but that's pretty much overkill. Is there a registry hack that can make the 800w's built-in Task Manager close programs when you tap the X-button?

Is installing HTC Task Manager a good idea, or is there a better solution?

I still stand by WKTask, not just as a closer but as a launcher too...

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

On the 700wx you could hold the Ok button and it would bring up the Task Manager to quickly close apps (but you probably already knew that).

You might check out QuickMenu. Run a search for it in the Software Forum.

There's no need to leave PPCGeeks...here's the in-house link for QuickMenu and a nice discussion to answer all of your questions.

I used to use this. I'm about to try it on my 800w.
http://vieka.com/vbar.htm
I've been using iLauncher on my 800w before this but felt like mixing it up a bit.

UPDATE: Don't bother using this now. Looks awful with our 320x320 screens.
Great freeware, but not yet 800w-ready.

It works on the 800w also. That's how I've been doing it.

Magic Button....simple, small, functional, & free.

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

Magic Button looks like crap on my Treo 800w... what gives? The bar for active applications overlaps and the ok button is not displayed correctly... I love the idea of Magic Button and I dont really require anything else.. I wish I could get it to look right.

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

I learned that the Magic button display is right next to the "X" (barely visible). I mean right next to it. One can change from two display modes. It's taking me a while to get used to it, and I still find a program still open now and again, but I'm learning. Hey, the program was free and not full of a lot of other features I didn't want.

Best of luck,

Stan

After trying pretty much every task manager I've settled on WkTASK. It's by far the best in my eyes.... this one displays right... works flawlesly and can be skinned..

Check it out.

Now, I have to agree. I tried them both now too, and like tman better. I checked out WkTASK, but it had to many bells and whistles for me. I'm sure it's a great program, but not for me. So far, tman has my vote. I don't use the stylus much and want somthing I can use without one. Tman is as close as I can get so far,

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

Well I took your suggestion in using tman and love it.

Here lies my problem:
I hit the landscape mode and now it's stuck in either landscape left or right. The screen looks the same but the d-pad controls are turned either way. Is there a program to fix this or do I have to do a hard reset? I uninstalled the program but that didn't change my d-pad back.

-Andrew

edit: I did a hard reset

to get my programs to close, i remove the battery door and then remove the battery and then reinsert the battery and battery door. This is the best method i found,...

I use WisBar Advanced. One thing I noticed however is that if I was sending a text message, sent it, and closed the SMS application it would never send the message until I went back into it... weird.

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

suggestions

magic button - simple with no customizations and display abnormalities

quickmenu close - big graphics issues with menu but close button works flawlessly

WKtask - works flawlessly with slight cramming display issues when configuring

wisbar - V 3.0 did not work for me at all

overall i definatly recommend WKtask.

I went with QuickMenu - yeeees on the graphics and the most convenient when it came to actual use - less movement of the finger.

I went with tman for awhile until I figured out that it was actually the program causing all my error pop-ups. when i'm not running tman, everything seems to be more stable. is this happening with anyone else?

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

I've been using tman for several weeks now and had no problems. My 800w Has been pretty solid with the 1/2 dozen programs installed.

I use tman... on a Touch with wm 6.1.... no error messages, it works very smoothly for me. Where did you install tman??? I would think it wants to be on the device, not on a storage card... could that be the problem?

lmv7777 08-30-2008 08:04 AM

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

storage card install is usually a worse idea than internal storage installation.

On the 800w, I tried holding the X down as mentioned in this thread, but that didn't do anything. Any ideas?

You need to hold the "OK" button down for a little more than 3 seconds. The task manager will pop up and then use the right soft key "MENU" and "E" and then press the center "OPTIONS" button. It will close all programs.

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

I actually do all my installs within the device.

Here's one of the small things that I find thats at fault.

While tman is running, click on settings -> connections -> bluetooth app -> printer tab -> then press "ok" to close.

let me know if you guys are getting an error report (shell32.exe) right after. can anyone explain this?

BenC 09-03-2008 03:43 PM

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

Not the X, the OK button brings up the task manager. I use QuickMenu which displays the active applications when the Windows button/icon is tapped, select the application via the cursor and then the right on the 5-way to close an application.

Re: What are you using to make the X-button close programs?

Hey guys, just wanted to follow up the comments about using the palm built in manager.
A faster way to access the built-in app is to hold down the option button and hit "ok"

This opens the palm task manager instantly, but I don't like the palm application because it will not perform a soft-reset.

One other nice feature of the 800w is that there are many more button combinations that can be assigned to programs using the buttons panel in settings than most other WM devices. You can use 3rd party soft for this purpose of course, such as AE button plus, but this is a nice touch on the 800w.
