Google Maps: A "How to" on the 700wx.

Yeah, this is posted a dozen times on various boards but still, this is the easiest way I've seen to get Google Maps up and running on the Treo 700wx.

1) download and install J9 app in attachment

2) go to http://google.com/gmm in PIE

3) Select High End phone and install

Now just run the J9 app and run Google Maps!

I have to admit...this setup with the softkey support (no touch screen) works very, very well on this device.

 After playing around a bit, I decided the freeware application Map4PDA is much more robust, easy to use and better program than just google maps (this has gmaps built in as well), so I suggest using that over the above. Get it here (you'll need CF 2.0):

Do you know if there is any benefit to running Google Maps rather than Map4PDA? I'm just wondering if I should use one than the other. Thanks.

I have Virtual Earth Mobile. Anyone know the differences?

Malatesta 10-15-2006 02:32 AM

well, I can't really say about maps4pda, though I would probably state that overall it IS a better solution that just gooogle maps. in fact maybe I'll throw it back on here and compare the two.

pibe38: maps4pda does gmaps, vir.earth moblie plus like 2 other mapping services, you can even overlay them.

now, map4pda DOES use CF 2.0, which probably slows it down. How much compared to java? I dunno...

nitty917 10-18-2006 01:02 AM

Hey what's the gps settings to be used on the phone to get Virtual Earth to work?

Pibe38 10-18-2006 01:36 AM

You need an external GPS for that I believe, not the phone GPS included in our devices.

EDIT: Question. After installing Google maps through the Java applet, can I delete the .jad file downloaded from the Google site? Or is it still in use? I tried looking for where it got installed but didn't find the place.

Map4Pda is better

I think they are found under IBM IVE, which is under \my documents, if I recall. And no, I don't think you can delete the Java applet without deleting Gmaps.

So after using both GoogleMaps alone and Map4PDA, even though it's slower to load up at first, I have to give my respect to Map4PDA.

It's way cooler, has tons more functions, and is very, very powerful. Give it as shot:

Virtual Earth for Mobile and Map 4 Pda seem very similar. The only thing is that Virtual Earth does not show local traffic information for my area, so I need Google maps to get any traffic data.

Dinomon1 11-15-2006 12:30 PM

Can Map4PDA get any traffic data?

It's attached on the first post, you need to be logged in to see it.

I found map4Pda to be a drain on my patience. It was very very slow inturn investing $$$ into tomtom 6.0.Very sweet software to say the least :D

I should have posted this here earlier.

This is a good alternative to both Google Maps and Map4PDA:

HI, What options are there for Map24 that Google and Map4PDA don't have? Or vice versa..

To be honest I don't really know.

I barely ever use these mapping programs.

Maps24 just works better and has better graphics than the other two and seems more stable. That's all I can say.

Phone's GPS

Do any of these work with the GPS in the phone?

ghanja568 11-25-2006 03:15 AM

issues setting up.

i followed your directions and i'm not able to install it on my phone, both google maps and j9. i can't even find it anywhere. please help.

santos 11-25-2006 11:03 PM

I tried maps4pda and it looked cool, but it's slow as hell. It also crapped up my Bluetooth when trying to connect to my external gps. I couldn't access my Bluetooth or load the maps4pda program until I removed it and rebooted. I'm gonna give Map24 a try.

Dinomon1 11-27-2006 01:24 PM

any reviews on Map24? I also tried to use Maps4PDA over the weekend, and it's nice application, but VERY SLOW..

Map24 has a nice UI, but search function is only for address, it seems.. but once u r at the address.. it does show POI around that area.. OTOH, Google can seach for Business names also.

Map24 also has a routing function too.. more like a improved Yahoo map's driving directions: for each step, it actually shows it on the map.

Question

I followed instructions down to a T and all i want to know is how long does it take to install the MIDlet, because the progress bar doesn't seem to be moving.

wowthatisrandom 01-26-2007 01:23 PM

use live search its a much better app

rddt 01-29-2007 01:59 AM

Two other solutions (besides Live Search, Map24, mad4pda, and Virtual Earth):

Google Maps for Mobile for the Treo 700p (fancy Palm OS touchscreen & transparency version) courtesy of:
http://styletap.com/

->I wonder how the performance of this compares to the Java version described in this thread?

And, there's a virtual GPS solution available that should work for anyone that doesn't own real GPS hardware!

Use this for your mapping program:
http://www.mgmaps.com/

And this for simulating GPS!

TIGER02 03-15-2007 03:13 AM

Hey has anyone tried the Navizon software yet?

crazie.eddie 03-15-2007 04:45 AM

I'm trying it now, but I suggest opening a new topic, so as not to steal this thread.
