So who wants Custom Roms? I flashed my WX!!!

I flashed my Sprint WX, with Verizon Firmware succesfully. I needed to do this to get around Sprints Data provisioning, so I could get Data on another carrier.

This means that there is no carrier ID, and we have a working Flasher for the WX. So wants to cook us up something good?

MrOuija36 07-22-2007 12:14 PM

wanna explain further?

you dont have those dreaded vcast type red bars everywhere do u

Alias 07-22-2007 01:39 PM

I think the reason we never seen Custom ROMS for this PPC is because we had no way to flash them. The only way to flash a phone was the update for Verizon phones. I found a way to load any bootloader and firmware you have, on any Treo 700WX.

And no red bars. I only used Verizons because it doesn't require an A-Key for data services like Sprint. My Sprint Treo wouldn't work on my carrier (Cricket). Thats why I flashed it.

Malatesta 07-22-2007 03:35 PM

Sounds like a great idea, unfortunately I know nothing of custom ROM making.

Not sure I wanna guinea pig either, I just removed my insurance on the phone, lol.

But obviously this could result in some sweet mods, so lets keep this alive...

Alias 07-22-2007 03:58 PM

I'm going to write up a tutorial. It took me 2 weeks to figure this out.

This may be useful for anyone in my situation, trying to get one carriers phone working with another firmware like I was.

Its also useful for the custom roms.

I'll post my instructions here, and on XDA Dev forums.

budney 07-22-2007 06:13 PM

This is very cool! Can't wait for the instructions, as my 700wx is still insured. :)

Reako10 07-22-2007 07:20 PM

Yes please post, as I also still have insurance. :D :D :D

skfny 07-23-2007 06:12 AM

Good job! I can't wait to see how this develops.

fiya 07-27-2007 11:32 PM

please post when you have time, xda has some roms i'd love to put on the wx...

adeon 07-28-2007 02:43 AM

Duudee.. wouldent that be sweet....

So if we flash your WX's we can use them with what carrier???

and I want a custom Rom... I dislike some apps that are pre-installed on my phone...

Mi$$ion 07-29-2007 02:14 PM

Any luck on the tutorial yet? Have also tried updating and no luck.

Alias 07-29-2007 08:47 PM

I think alot of people may be confused here.

All my findings alow is to flash custom roms. No such custom roms exist yet, trying to flash another devices rom on your Treo will most defintly BRICK your device. Dead, paperweight, no turning back.

Currently the only ROM and Bootloader we have is the VZW 1.22 ROM, and bootloader. Thats the only thing available to flash. And even that is just an extended ROM update. So if your wanting to bypass Sprint's Data provisioning like myself, then send me a PM and I will walk you thru it.

All this does is open up the possibility for someone to create a Custom ROM. Currently I am looking into cooking a Custom ROM for Cricket users/myself.

However I wouldn't hold my breath about custom ROMS on this device. It doesn't use the traditional extended ROM, all the apps are loaded into the NVRam, no extended NVRam exists. No software is installed into user memory on a hard reset. So its a little diferent than the Apache. So there are no users looking to make a lean ROM, which is the BIG reason you see custom roms for other devices.

PPCGeeks.com and I are not responsible for damages to your device. Your taking a risk doing this.

If anyone is interested in puting the VZW 1.22 ROM on your phone here are the steps nessacary. This may be useful to anyone who botched the rom update useing the windows installer.

1: Goto www.palm.com/support Download the Verizon update for the Treo 700WX.

2: Get WinRAR or another program that will extract the Executable file you just downloaded.

3: Once extracted, copy the file "DObootloader.exe" to your phone, and then run it. You can also open up the dialer and type: ##UPST# . Depending on your carrier, these codes may be diferent. Once in bootloader mode you will see a white screen with the version numbers at the top.

4: Plug your device into its charger. Plug in your device, Windows will install some drivers. You should see "HTC USB SYNC" under moviles devices in your control panel.

5: Open up a command prompt. XP users, Start then, run, then type "cmd". Vista users can just type "cmd" in the search field on the Start menu. I had trouble connecting with Vista, XP is your best bet here.

6: At the command prompt type: "C:\XXXXX\ruucmd.exe -asyncoff -t -v C:\Updater\bootloader.ruu" Replace the "XXXXX" with the directory that you extracted your files to. Its going to ask you to continue, hit enter. This is the no turning back point. If you hit enter, your in for the long hall.

7: Wait, patiently, wait some more. DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR DEVICE UNTIL IT IS DONE.

8: Once thats done reset your device. Repeat step number 3.

9: Now back to the command prompt, type: "C:\XXXXX\ruucmd.exe -asyncoff -asyncon -t -v C:\Updater\fwandrom.ruu" Once again replacing the XXXXX with the directory of your choosing.

10: Wait, get some coffee, drink it, go take a leak. This takes time, around 30 minutes. Be patient.

11: Once it is complete, hard reset your device. Hold the power key and press the reset button. Now set it down somewhere and don't touch it. My Treo took a good 20 minutes to boot back up after this step.

Thats it!!

Thanks Alias!

That is all I really wanted to know...how to do any updates. I just would like to get it to the latest Windows Mobile 5 AKU (3.5 I believe). I have seen the 750 with Windows Mobile 6 and have a clean copy of Windows Mobile 6, so I was going to try that.

Are you a programmer or just like hacking the phones?

Cheers,

I'm a little bit of both, home schooled.

I honestly don't think it will work. The 750 is a GSM phone also. So make sure the rom doesn't contain a radio update. So the software is abit diferent. But PLEASE post back with your results. I assume that if you don't flash the bootloader, you'll be able to revert back to the VZW firmware.

Wideawake 07-30-2007 12:22 PM

Yea I played around with the verizon updater myself. I just never attempted to flash the verizon file. But I did try and break it down to a dump folder and I personally didnt have any success. But good job with the work!

nemanracing 07-30-2007 07:17 PM

I'm going to search some more on xda. I am willing to try anything. I not afraid to fry a phone... I'll try and do what i can...

Mi$$ion 08-02-2007 08:10 PM

Well, I got it into bootloader mode,

6: At the command prompt type: "C:\XXXXX\ruucmd.exe -asyncoff -t -v C:\Updater\bootloader.ruu" Replace the "XXXXX" with the directory that you extracted your files to. Its going to ask you to continue, hit enter. This is the no turning back point. If you hit enter, your in for the long hall.

I left it overnight, still nothing. I pulled the battery, tried to reset it...nothing.

I tried to use all of the utilities to reset it. Nothing would work. I ran the step 6 update and that worked, but that is all that would recognize the Treo.

Any ideas?

Knether 08-02-2007 11:44 PM

Well, in a non related incident, i bricked my phone..

any help?

At the CMD prompt did it flash the phone? It would have shown 100+ lines with a percentage. What does the display show now? The bootloader?

What does your display show, and what did you do to "brick" it?

DavidIQ 08-08-2007 10:41 PM

Just got brave and did this. A couple of things to consider especially if you're using Vista.

1. DON'T use the cradle. I couldn't get the phone off of bootloader or get it recognized by the OS after unplugging it to get past step 6 and started to freak out and even tried connecting the phone to another computer to no avail. I took the plug off of the cradle, plugged it directly to the phone, pressed and held the red power button, took the battery off and put it right back and the HTC device came right up. You can't do this with the phone in the cradle and is why I say to not use the cradle. One way to avoid this is...to not unplug the phone after step 6. Phone resets itself so there's no need.

2. If you're using Vista (original author mentioned he couldn't get the phone to be recognized by the updater) you'll need to go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> And RIGHT-CLICK on Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator". If you have UAC turned on you'll get the "are you sure you want to do this" crap dialog box. Click continue and then you should be able to run the command with no problems.

The only reason I did this was to see if BT DUN would work correctly because my phone kept freezing up with hanip's BT hack whenever I connected to the BT DUN. I'll report back after I've played with the phone some and see if there are no problems.

DavidIQ 08-09-2007 01:23 AM

Hmmmm...now I have Verizon logos and links on my Sprint phone  Phone seems to be working fine and the A2DP stuff is in there as well. Will test the BT DUN tomorrow.

DavidIQ 08-10-2007 12:43 AM

Ok so after a day of using the phone I'm happy to report that my BT headset is now behaving a tad better and reception seems clearer. Did some tethering but not for very long. This update seems to have fixed some BT issues 8)

I'll probably be doing some long-term tethering tomorrow so we'll see what happens then.

jeffH70 08-10-2007 03:14 PM

A question, after the flash, can you get back to the original Sprint rom? Or another phrase will be if there is a rom image to restore original Sprint load? A concern if it needs any service and the Verizon logo will not fly in Sprint store.

Jeff

DavidIQ 08-10-2007 03:24 PM

Probably not. You'll be stuck with the Verizon stuff until Palm decides to come out with the Sprint version of the ROM upgrade...unless someone knows where the logo used when turning the phone part on and off is stored at and if it's changeable.

Malatesta 08-30-2007 05:25 PM

Bump:

So now we have a Sprint updater out, anyone make or care to attempt to make progress on custom ROMs for Sprint and/or Verizon 700wx's?

At the very least--detail what we know so far (unless I missed it)?

If there's anything I can do to help this along, let me know. I'm not on here often so drop me an email.

lattisimo 09-05-2007 01:05 PM

I have a Sprint Treo 700wx w/ firmware version 1.12 (Demo Device). The updater from Palm will not update the handset. Says its not sprint!

I extracted the contents of the Sprint 1.15 update to a folder using winrar. I put my phone in bootloader using ##8778# (UPST). I ran the command:

"F:\Treo700wxSprint1.15DesktopUpdater\ruucmd.e xe -asyncoff -t -v F:\Treo700wxSprint1.15DesktopUpdater\bootloader.ru u"

("F:\Treo700wxSprint1.15DesktopUpdater\" is just the location I upacked the update to, yours will likely be different) The command completed in seconds and this successfully got my Treo stuck in boot loader and i mean stuck. Soft reset, hard reset, nothing would make a difference

Now that I have committed my device I then ran the same command but pointed it to the FwAndRom.ruu:

"F:\Treo700wxSprint1.15DesktopUpdater\ruucmd.e xe -asyncoff -t -v F:\Treo700wxSprint1.15DesktopUpdater\FwAndRom.ruu"

and i saw magic happen. The device indicated that the radio was being updated and I could see the progress in the command line on the pc. It took a bit for the radio update to finish, about 5- 10min. It then started the firmware update which was also indicated on the device with a progress bar and i could see the percetage update on the command line. This took about 15 - 20min. When I was done the device rebooted to the Treo name on the screen and I left it there for about 10 minutes then tried a hard reset cause I am impatient. I should have done the hard reset right away, that was all I needed to do. I now have a demo device with v1.15. It still says 1.12 but i have the software store and THB kit which was not there before. Thank you for your info, without it i would have gotten nowhere.

Very good work, lattisimo and DavidIQ! Interesting read.

I'm hoping this can open the door for us to figure out hacking the ROMs... who knows, maybe someday we might have a chance at WM6.

Wozzer 10-05-2007 03:08 PM

Hmm, does anyone have a Sprint 1.13 or 1.14 ROM image sitting around? That would be super useful for those of us who "upgraded" to 1.15 before we discovered that it destroys USB DUN, and want to now "downgrade" to 1.13.

treo_nut 08-24-2009 11:55 PM

Still having trouble!

I love your post buuuuttt, the phone still doesnt work I dont know if it is the hardware in the phone or the software but I am just lost and very very sad.:violent2:
