FREE Universal IM Client?
I had Agile messenger installed, and it recently told me that I need to run an upgrade to continue using it.
It now tells me that I am using a trial version which will expire! :( Is there a FREE decent IM client that will let me access Y!, MSN and AIM? |
I don't think there's a free one. At least I haven't heard of one...

No, that's only AOL. I doubt you'll find a free multi-client messenger since it usually involves the use of servers that cost money. That's why most, if not all, at least that I know of, multi-client messengers have a subscription fee.

does anyone use IM+?
I had Webmessenger (which is a great IM client, fairly priced [one time price[) but for some reason, I cannot view text in the chat window. So rather than do a hard reset (I think it's the Threaded SMS that's doing it) I was looking at IM+. I tried the trial version and I am satisfied with it. I just want to know if it's always-on like AOL/AIM and will drain that battery if left running, or is it like Webmessenger / Agile that just updates itself every 30-45 seconds or so and keeps mainly an idle data connection. |
How about this!!!!
I have used this program for a couple months now, and eventhough it may take a bit getting used to, it seems to work for multiple IM clients (I have used AIM and Yahoo, but it offers more). How about as few more people try it any let me know if I found a goodie here!!!
http://www.freewareppc.com/communica...essenger.shtml Let me know, I am having good luck with it so far!! |
I tried to add the file, but can't, I hope you guys don't mind going to the site, I don't like it....too many pop-ups, but at least you can read the description, believe me, it is much better than I could do!! :D

Thanks...that is the site I like...I didn't like the one I posted. So I am not the only one that found it....Do you like this one? Do you think it covers what everybody here is looking for well enough? It suits my needs well enough, and the price is right!!!!

I can't get mine to work anyone else
|
Care to be more specific? What can't you get to work?
|
got this... just now... thanks for the post.. I hadn't been able to find the web page for AOL IM... i talk to several folks on it
|
I'm using the Imov, but I can' figure out why have duplicate contact lists.
|
I use imov as well, and I don't have duplicate lists, but what it does, is log you in with all the IM programs you use at once, and list all your contacts from all the programs at once...is that what your seeing by any chance?
I am thinking of trying octro...is that still free? |
Is there anyone that has a problem when you want to display just the contacts thats online?

I'm using imov...but I am having trouble logging into a chat room. I can chat with anyone, one on one, on my chat list...I just can't join a chat room with multiple people in it.
When I click on "menu"..."conferencing"..."join room" nothing happens. Any ideas? |
I tried using Agile Messenger and everytime I tried minimizing with "Ok" it'd start recording a voice message. I couldn't figure out how to turn that option off. So I dropped that.
I tried imov, and the whole Jabber thing was kind of weird at first, but then after I finally logged in, I had some other weird issues, like... there are some buddies I have that are listed twice on my AIM Buddy List. However imov would only associate with one of the entries on the list, so I would IM 1 entry and his response would come out in another IM window. Some other random UI issues annoyed me. So then I tried octro, and here...well I didn't like how my AIM name showed up as my gmail address. But I had a big issue with people never receiving some of my IMs. It really bothered me, and it would randomly disconnect on me. I've settled with the modified UK AIM client, it's not perfect, and really wish it had stuff like LED flash when IM comes in, but it works exactly as it suppose to so I can't complain too much. =/ |

I use Octro every day have zero issues. Personally, I find it the best and in a comparison it has more features and better performance on CPU usage than the others (see Menneisyys' IM bible at pocketpcmag.com) As to the OP about a universal, free IM client: don't hold your breath. It's not free nor easy to develop a universal, feature-robust IM client for mobile devices. It is also not free to maintain servers for connecting. This is why you won't see a "free" service, since there are a lot of costs in developing software and updating it. I've been with Octro since version 0.01--I couldn't even IM myself in that version  but it's come along way since after lots of development. |

Do any of the IM programs light the LED on the 700wx in a special way to let you know a new message has arrived?
I started trying Octro yesterday (version 1.19). Seems ok so far I think, drains my battery faster than I had hoped, maybe they all do (first IM client I've tried on the treo). Is there any problem having multiple IM programs in the 700wx at the same time (as long as only one is actually running)? Because I'll probably try a few other IM programs out there. Thanks! |
I have downloaded Octro but I cant seem to stay connected for long periods of time. Did you guys adjust any options within Octro to stay connected? Or is it something with my internet connection with my provider?
|
any updates to the question
|
Like Courtney, I use Parlingo (www.parlingo.com) it lets you use AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Etc... plus its own client to talk to other Parlingo users via PTT like you would on Nextel. My wife and I use it instead of calling each other. Plus you can join the PPCGeeks chatroom all day :)

Any SMS based Instant Messaging apps?
|
AOL uses an SMS IM but you have to have their Client on a computer to register the SMS side of it and you have to use their services (Ie. People your SMS to IM have to be on AIM).

Re: FREE Universal IM Client?
Could someone put the AIM download in .cab form, so it be accessed from the device...or PM me the .cab? Thanks in advance

Re: FREE Universal IM Client?
I am very impressed thus far with the Imov messenger basic. it does everything nicely. though I don't see the option to hide offline contacts, that would be kinda nice. other than that works perfect for me and my 700wx :)

The best client available is free currently. Slick is awesome and free for now as its in beta. I dont know if they will charge after the beta or not but the betas are great and dont seem to expire.
Give it try. I think you will like it. http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick |
