PDANet tends to be unstable with the Treo, hence the discussion above saying as much.

It's a simple program and is really hands off, so it basically works well. But for me and a heck of a lot of others, after prolonged use it freezes the Treo.

The method discussed here is supposed to alleviate that (and someone even hinted at better performance than PDANet).

As to why you cannot get it to work, if you have a Sprint device and Win Xp then it is strictly user error. Just follow the directions to a t and it will work.

Im running XP and i believe i followed all the directions to a "T" and I had no luck getting the modem to work. I installed PDAnet and without doing anything, the connection worked.

I dont know what toggeling means, or how to do a "test dial" to see if my modem works. I'm not even close to being a computer expert and that is why i turn to this site for professional advice.

What can i delete/erase to start from scratch? or should i just settle for PDAnet working and keep it simple.

Try running PDANet for a few days and see how it works.

It's by far the simpler method!

If you have no issues then definitely stick with it as it's just a straight forward solution. I'd use it if I didn't have freezes.

If OTOH you do experience some freezing/disconnects and you want to try the method here, put a post up and we'll try to walk through it.

I promise i followed all the directions to a "T" and I still cant get the modem on my phone to connect. I get error code 678 all the time.

i deleted and reinstalled everything.
PDAnet works fine for now but when i disconnect I have to restart my computer to get it to work again so i can see how that will get annoying.

What am i missing out on?

for me it's this:

when you launch the Network Connections for Sprint (the modem window), under Properties, 9/10 my Treo does not show there and I have to either reinstall the driver, or make sure my Treo doesn't "shut off" during the process. If it shuts off, no Treo will be detected.

anyone have it working under linux yet? It recognizes it, but hasn't done much past that. I'm trying wine + sprint connection manager... and wvdial.

You guys are amazing. I never would've figured this thing out. It was much simpler to set up my ppc6700. Special thanks to Big D5 for his tremendous effort and to kwyatt for posting that zip for the driver. I went round and round with trying to get the driver. It wasn't on my Treo disk from Sprint, I couldn't find it in the Sprint Connection Manager download either. There's no way I would've figure this out without all of you.

Ok, what is this and how do i install it? I still cant connect using my phone.

I downloaded PDAnet and now i see what you mean about crashing or quiting on me.

I dont have the CD for the phone so i downloaded the link from this site and set up everything as followed. In Properties i check mark the treo phone modem. when i try to connect i get an error of 678?????

What more can you give as advice. What is the zip file that is posted on here able to do?

FYI, I fixed my stability issues with PDANet.

They are linked inherently to modifying the registry (or using a tweak program) that alters certain values for TCP, maxconnectionsperserver, maxrequestthreads, etc. Basically anything "internet related" for tweaks is a candidate.

You can test this yourself and see if it helps:

- Assuming you have SPB or Sprite Backup, do a back up.

- Hard Reset

- Just install PDANet and see if you can make it crash

If you can...then disregard everything above! If you can't...then it might be a hack/tweak you did or 3rd party software

For instance: I found rlToday Plugin when the refresh value was set at the default 100ms (very fast) could overwhelm the CPU when when PDANet was downloading a lot of data. Changing the rlToday plugin value to 1000ms+ increased stability.

In other words, PDANet can become very resource-intensive at times. If you have other programs running in the background, plugins that do things, etc. it could compromise the stability of PDAnet.

Getting to your specific question:

1) Make sure the Treo stays on during the whole process. You won't have an AS connection to the computer to "keep it on" and it'll shut off. If it does, you'll get that error.

2) When you launch the modem program on the Treo and you Activate, make sure do the "power off the phone radio/the power the radio back on" as that is very necessary for the connection.


Then connect the USB up to the computer and hit "connect" on the dial-up program. Also double check that the Treo is showing up as a modem under your dial-up screen (via Properties). Mine often would disappear and it would use some generic modem giving me that error.

Make sure the device doesn't turn off though during this process.

Just play with it a bit and make sure you do the radio-cycle trick, otherwise it won't work.

It does take a few times before you teach yourself "the pattern" for getting a successful connection. Good luck :thumbleft:
