Tweaks via Preware

As someone who is a huge fan of OTA (over the air) updates, there now is a new OTA way to apply tweaks. No longer will you have to root your Pre or hard wire it to a PC and use WebOS Quick Install.

If you aren't aware of Preware, you should be. Preware is an OTA homebrew installer. Allowing you to install homebrew programs, themes, the virtual keyboard and now tweaks. Instructions on how to install Preware are located here: http://forums.precentral.net/homebre...0-preware.html

As far as the new tweak installer, the following steps will get you rolling:

1) Load Preware (after installing it if you don't have it installed)
2) Select "List of Everything"
3) Look for "autopatch-feed"
4) Install the "autopatch-feed"
5) Update your feeds (or close and restart Preware)
6) The "Available Patches" will now be a number over 50.
7) Enjoy all the tweaks via OTA.

Note: Some patches require a manual restart before they will function.
Note: Not all patches work with WebOS 1.2, many still work, others are already updated. Don't stress about this, if you want to try a tweak, just do it. If it isn't compatible the install will fail.

One of my favorite new tweaks is the LED notifications. If you don't know what I'm talking about check out this youtube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWoR9H46MNQ

You get an error you when you try to install Preware? Did you donwload the Package Manager Service? The best way to install Preware the first time on your Pre is to use WebOS Quick Install on your PC.

Let me know if you need directions on how to do that.

Trust me, I see much more stupidity on PreCentral than I generally see around here.

Ain't that the truth!!! People just don't seem to be able to read over there. You'll see 5 or 6 posts right in a row all asking the same thing...nevermind that the the first post contains EVERYTHING that you need to know about the tweak or homebrew app, etc.

Coz

Anybody get the multiple cards for messaging conversations to work? It installs via preware, but doesn't seem to work for me.

I was reading the Preware thread last night where they explained how to get the tweaks feed working and literally 4 posts down after the answer someone asked how to get the tweaks feed. The other good thread is the WebOS Quick Install thread, where of course people ask every other post when the developer plans to get it working with WebOS 1.2 which had just come out the day before. Give the guy a break.

It's working for me. Did you reset your phone after you installed it?

The reset button homebrew app is handy for this by the way.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that it's dumb that the tweaks in Preware don't automatically reset the Pre for you if the tweak requires it.

Yes, I did. And yes... .It is dumb that it doesn't force a restart. LOL

Will try it again. I would really LOVE this feature.

out of curiosity is this like cydia for ipod touch/iphone?
Can you add repositories to this?

Didn't work first time. Even with a reset. It did work the second time.

Re: Tweaks via Preware

Odd, but I found I can't have any other applications running when I start Preware. If I do it gets stuck in either checking for updates or updating. If I close all the other apps and restart Preware it works fine.....

Preware can be very fussy at times. Occasionally I have reset to get it to work.

Trust me, I do not miss my TP, other than a few apps.

New version of Preware out this morning. Version 0.9.2 and it enables screen shots for the patches. I give it two thumbs up.

Another new version of Preware out, also new version of package manager. Make sure you run ERP to remove your tweaks before you update and update the package manager service first.

I've never removed my tweaks prior to updating to a new version of Preware. Have you had problems or read about issues?

Coz

The new version changes something in the way tweaks are handled. It's the first time it's been necessary to remove tweaks prior to installing.

I did not remove tweaks before updating and what happens is that Preware doesn't recognize any of your tweaks as installed.

Re: Tweaks via Preware

Good timing....I just finished reading about it here. I ended up removing all my patches via WebOS Quick Install and reinstalling them via Preware.

Thanks for the heads up!

Coz
