THE LIST to submit to palm

Hey guys I have a management contact at Sprint corporate that is glad to hand of our suggestions to some upper management types at Palm. This thread is for compiling the list to periodically send to Palm through Sprint. Attached to the thread is the current list as of 8/19

so let me know what your ideas are and i'll pass them along

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints

Please talk to him about trying to push a file explorer app and enable the ability to download files from the browser in the pre, not having one is a huge drawback in a business device cuz you will need to store multiple files since you have the ability to use the device as a mass storage device wether supported by another app or not, so you will need to download from the web pics, mp3, documents, pdf's, etc as well as saving it from email attachments so having that limitation will hurt a lot of users

So my plea...

1. File manager / explorer
2. Web and email downloading / saving (or an option to open, stream, or download)

Thanx

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints

I'll approach this with a slightly different angle. I didn't buy a Pre because i was concerned about build quality.

The forums over a pre central are crawling with complaints about build quality ("oreo effect", issues with the slider etc). As far as I can tell (and please correct me if I am wrong) the build quality issues haven't been addressed.

I noticed the issues while at the Sprint store. Yes, I'm well aware I was using a demo unit, but nonetheless it caused me concern.

Other than that my only other concern was the software. I'd like a dedicated desktop PIM application and to see an app store explosion. If I recall, some programs (like the calendar) didn't rotate with the accelerometer. The screen was definitely awesome. I found it very responsive to gestures (swiping, pinching etc.)

Fixing the build quality issues would have me overlook all of the above however.

i've heard the same things and seen some almost horrifying pics about the slider but my phone is second production run (i'm pretty sure) and the slider feels pretty tight but i'll mention it just to be sure

Poor signal quality.

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints

*1. Download from web to pre
2. Record Video (I dont use it but the one day I would want to it would be nice to have)
*3. Customized text alerts
4. On screen KB

5. MicroSD slot in a future gen release (I know it wont be anytime soon, but idea is there)
6. Better physical KB

Thats it for now.

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints

1. File Explorer
2. Video Recording
3. On-Screen Keyboard
4. Micro SD Slot
5. Some sort of today-plugin like features. I feel like the home screen lacks functionality.
6. Ability to download and save.
7. Better hardware keyboard

Thats it for now.

1+ for the poster above

1.file explorer
2.Flash for browser
3.Downloadable content
4.Zip file access
5.Video Recording
6. On screen keyboard

can't change the micro sd situation and a better keyboard is out so I think these things should do.

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints

1. Universal search not being able to search email, memos, tasks, etc.
2. Not being able to send info, such as contact info, via bluetooth.
3. All day events not showing up in month view on the calendar.
4. Reminder times being more customizable. (ex. wanting to set a reminder 3 hours before a calendar event starts)

yeah this has been mentioned a couple of times over on precentral and we're theorizing a rebuilt radio maybe? what i know is that in terms of signal reception my pre doesn't even come close to the TP and i don't think the TP was that great on reception either

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints, suggestions

I'd really like to see a little bit more work put into polishing Synergy. I quite like how you can combine contact info from various networking sites and append that to each individual contact, but I strongly dislike that some services add contacts to my list without letting me remove them. An example being, today I configured my Pre to work with my AIM account. Without asking me, it merged all my AIM contacts with my main contact list, and now I cannot remove or hide them. This bothers me because there are people on my AIM contact list that I do not want to be in my main Pre contact list--people I don't know too well, wouldn't talk to often, or have only limited information on. I can understand if the scope of this Synergy concept is to keep all contacts in this main list, but as I said I would definitely appreciate being able to hide some contacts and all-together delete others from both AIM and my Pre.
Further, when I was introduced to the Pre, one of the cool features I noticed was that you could start playing music and then go about your business on the phone, with the music still playing in the background. Going off of this, I went ahead and tried it out with youtube videos using the phone's built-in app. To my dismay, both the video and audio stopped once I returned to card view. In future versions, I would like to see the youtube app working under the same premise of uniformity that the rest of the phone seems to abide by.

tl;dr give me more customization and control over my contact list, and allow apps like youtube to continue working in the background. :)

Ok here is another:

The ability to turn off the auto answer when lifting the Pre off the Touchstone.

I know it has been posted on other sites and it's happened to me a few times. Today my Pre rang while on the Touchstone so I picked it up to see who it was, not thinking because I had other things going on, and had to take the call.

yeah i can see how that would be annoying, definitely noted
i think i'm up to like 40 different suggestions between here and precentral

I agree on the AIM contacts. However, what would be the benefit of having a youtube video keep playing after minimizing and going to a different card? Personally, I'd find it rather annoying if a had to manually pause the video everytime I minimize it to do something else.

I am pretty sure most of the complaint are software issues, not hardware issues so they will hopefully get fixed in future updates. Some of the issues like the oreo effect and loose battery are hardware but you can exchange the phone for a better one and Palm, hopefully, is changing the way they are making the phones so they look the exact same, but do not have the hardware issues.

If you wait for a later model, you are taking the chance that Palm might screw up and have a butt ugly phone with webOS. I happen to like the design of the Pre and am currently trying to convince my dad to let me buy one. :)

Give it time. Alot of those hacks will eventually find their way to either the device via upgrades or via Homebrew apps.

As it is now, a lot of those hacks are not making new changes to your Pre....those hacks are merely unlocking existing features.

Make sense?

Coz

Damn I just got busted like that girl on facebook.

Software updates, hacks, and homebrews are out there that so far make this device better every week. Give it a try and I think you'll like it better than you anticipate. I was a bit weary about getting it at first but so far I don't regret my decision.

Is the Palm Pre able to run 3d games like the iphone? Is so, Palm should try to get some big name developers to develop some games like EA, 2k and others...

about 98% of the list i've assembled is software for the phone so there really isn't any reason why we can't have expanded features on the Pre. however some of the requests are things i wouldn't expect palm to implement so my recommendation is definitely keep an eye on the app store especially since theres a lot of cool things happening with homebrew already
as for hardware, palm has been making subtle changes in the 2nd production run, engadget has documented these changes and my pre has (bought mine 8/1 from The Shack) said changes so the hardware is getting better already

sadly no, http://www.precentral.net/?page=1 but looks like palm is working on creating quite the gaming environment for the pre and webos

Update:
My rep no showed last week when I was expecting him in town, however; I will be attending the Sprint Vendor Expo SLC tomorrow morning and my Sprint rep says there will be people from Palm there so I should be able to talk to them about it and I'm going to email the list to my direct rep anyway so I should be able to see what Sprint and Palm think soon and I'll let ya guys know what happens
Also by the way, the compiled list has 53 improvements that we'd like to see implemented. Will post or email upon request

Why not just post them here? It'll save you from having to PM or email them individually.

jbearamus 08-19-2009 05:28 PM

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints, suggestions

Ok here's what happened. The palm rep listened to a couple of the bigger things that I rattled off the list and he showed me a "work around" for forwarding messaging (it involves a screen shot and MMS) but that was it. He said he could put me in contact with some 3rd party developers who are working with the SDK so he didn't seem like much help.
I ended up talking to my Sprint Rep's boss's boss so a higher up who did mention he talks to a couple of higher ups within Palm itself and he'd be happy to pass along our list so it's not the avenue of communication I was hoping for but we will be heard and hopefully we'll see some good come out of this.
Thank you for the suggestions everyone and if we want to keep this thread going I'll be sure to keep everything compiled and pass things along regularly.

I was going to try to see if I could attach a document like you would a picture that way we don't end up with a big huge post because I have everything broken down and organized and it turned into a 5 page word document. but I'll post em if that's how we need to do it

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints, suggestions

Media player needs a lot of work, with the web browser also. Media player should at least save where you left off in the song before you closed the app especially since it doesn't allow you to scroll through the song. Also it should allow you to scroll through the song like amazon mp3, not having to hold the FF button till you get to the desired location. It would also be great if the make it like the iphone where if your listening to a podcast, it seperates all the tracks in the podcast allowing you to chose between those tracks and seeing the album art to the track.

the web browser, all it really needs is the ability to save images, ability to send links via email or sms kinda like opera allows for windows mobile, and also to allow for tabbed browsing. well an easier way like say if i have the keyboard closed i can hold the gesture area and click a link and it opens the link in a new card.

Thanks man for helping make the palm experience better than what it already is :D

jjday7 08-19-2009 11:34 PM

Re: Conversation w/ Palm, give me your complaints, suggestions

yeah the web browser is lacking especially the way it formats text. no wrap around like opera and of course no copy and paste and no way to save pics.. palm is way too hush hush about updates. . I am giving them till october 11th

Re: THE LIST to submit to palm

Here is my personal list on what palm should improve on the current pre (its all software so it should be fixed without a new device so I can wait till Palm can fix this with future updates)

- add file explorer / manager (why have usb mass storage if you can't get to your files?)
- enable web downloading / saving as well as email attachments (cruicial for me)
- text forwarding (don't use it personally but should be there)
- beef up the sdk to support native apps (deeper hardware access and non web only apps, its too limited IMO and this should be a green light for more complex apps as well as badazz games)
- enable openGL hardware gfx acceleration support (why have a 3gs-like cpu if we can't use it?)
- fix copy / paste for all text (why palm why?)
- add emails and memos to universal search (not so universal is it?)
- add msn messenger and windows live to Synergy and I.M clients (one of the biggest sources and not supported...)
