Nvidia is entering WM Cpu arena.

Nvidia is dropping their wm gpu and are working on a new wm cpu. Over 800mhz with 3D graphics built in. Nvidia reps were demonstrating mockups with windows mobile with a VGA screen. Nvidia chips are to be so low power that battery performance should be no worse than todays 400mhz chips even with advanced 3D acceleration. You can bet Nvidia will make sure that their chips have video drivers. Some devices like gps and media players later this year with phones likely 2009. I sure wish I had one now. A real gaming pda phone. Just give us a decent Dpad. If I can remember the web site I saw this on last night, I will try to post later.

Here is the link to the Pcmagazine article. Blueray and 720p HD output (hardware encoded not cpu cycles), HDMI, up to 12megapixel pictures with image stabilization, up to 10 hours of HD video or 100 hours of audio on a single charge from an Iphone sized battery, and only windows mobile support. Just imagine the car entertainment center this thing could power.

Nice! It's taking a while but if the hardware is there and the drivers are there, it's only a matter of time until someone writes good apps and GUIs that utilize it. If it's not Microsoft that does it, it will be HTC or Google or some other company.

Qualcomm has drivers HTC is the problem with the current situation and it may not matter if it was currently Nvidia instead of Qualcomm.

Actually if you read up on Qualcomm's new/next chips called snapdragon i think, they are incredibly impressive. They are 1GHz parts that are powerful enough to run a full OS.

I agree that HTC is the problem, but I don't think Nvidia would allow their reputation to be tarnished by crappy video performance. That might be why they want the whole cpu instead of turning their gpu over to someone else to implement.

Hi neodorian,

The article quoted the Nvidia spokesman as being completely commited to WM. He said WM was the future.

I would hope you are right but I would suspect all nvidia would really care about would be securing the largest orders from ODM's like HTC. Unless they are manufactuing the phone ala Apple i doubt you will get any support from them either just like us going to Qualcomm now. Maybe I'm just jaded now!

I edited the OP with a link to the pcmag article. 720p HD and HDMI out! 10hrs of HD video or 100 hours of audio. 12 megapixel images with stabilization. Hardware video encoding. Check it out.

I LOVE nVidia so if they launch a full mobile platform, I'm all over it!

Re: Nvidia is entering WM Cpu arena.

Yeah, they have served me well over the years. I almost always use nVidia cards when I build my gaming desktops and they were great to provide 3d drivers for my Linux machines when ATI didn't offer any. I'm not super into brand loyalty but if I get consistently good products from someplace, I will usually look there first when I need something new.
