Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

I on Sunday, I requested a replacement device and they agreed to send me another Droid 1. Well much to my surprise, I opened the box and it was a brand spankin new Droid 2! They included a letter that stated that they were sorry, but unfortunately they are unable to replace my D1 and that they automatically upgraded me to a Droid 2. I couldn't believe it. I finally got a break and got a free upgrade for once. Just FYI, incase any of you have "defective D1" that needs replacing.

There is nothing I want out of a droid 2, I would prefer a droid 1 replacement. That is why I am praying my droid holds out for the next couple of years.

why not?
maybe theres not many new features but its defiantly not worse than a droid 1.

Until the droid 2 gets a custom recovery that allows you to load ROMs and overclock ect.... It's not worth it for me to upgrade. However since you got your upgrade due to warranty replacement your in good shape. Also I have not heard of any glitches with the droid 2.

Unless you really use WiFi tether for free, there really isn't any reason to root and flash roms. This thing doesn't need to be OC'd at all. Nandroid backups and restores would be nice though in the event of a replacement phone or hard reset.

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

See, I do use the free wifi tether, and without it the phone would be useless.

Oh, well I never used it so it wasn't an issue for me. Be careful with your D1 because it looks like they are becoming extinct.

no problem d2 has root and therefore wireless tether.

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

I called in my replacement today since the one they sent me for a cracked screen has a serious issue with humidity change and the touchscreen. She indicated I'd be getting a droid1 back, but when I asked if she was sure she said "I can't tell if you'll get an original or a two, probably a two that's what we've been sending mostly"

I'll miss my custom roms but will enjoy a touchscreen that's not so finicky.

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

I heard that it depends on which warehouse your replacement is coming from. I live in SE NM, so my replacements ship out of Fort Worth, TX. Apparently, they are out of D1's so they were auto upgarding customers to D2's. Mine came as a surprise after I was told that I was getting a D1 for sure. It came new in the box with everything. Some others are reporting getting just the phone and battery cover. Mine came in a 2lb package (FedEx tracking). If it's just the phone it will say 1lb on tracking, and it could be a D1 or 2. If it says 2lbs, it is definately a D2 new in the box due to the extra stuff.

What number are you guys calling for replacements? Asurion or Verizon. Do you guys have the verizon number?
The Droid is still under warranty. My Droid has been having charging problems ever since 2.2 update.

Verizon: 1-800-922-0204

Don't call Asurion unless you want to pay $90 for a replacement.

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

Yes I definitely could be. Believe it or not, I had to get my D2 replaced already due to dead pixels. The sent me a 1lb package and it had a brand new D2 phone only in it. I just received it 2 hours ago.
I have read about many ppl receiving D2 chassis' only, like I did this time around. The D2 refurbs aren't out yet, so if you get one (whether it has a box or not) it is brand new. You will also recieve another box that contains your battery and cover, but it will not be listed on your shipping summary. Somehow I just got lucky and received everything the first time in a sealed box (2lb package). Either way, it's a good possibility that you will receive a D2.

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

Well that sucks. Maybe you'll get lucky this time. It must really depends on which warehouse it shops from. Fort Worth, TX just must be completely out of D1's.

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

Glad to hear some of you guys are getting free D2 upgrades :)

I ordered a replacement with a rep over the phone and am awaiting it on Monday.

The tracking info states it is 1lbs and leaving the FORT WORTH, TX warehouse.
I am the Tampa, FL area.

I will let you all know what I actually receive, though I fear it will be the A855 Droid 1. VZW sent me an e-mail stating such. :(

Here's hoping though.

If anyone is planning on doing the same, I told them the 2.2 Froyo update caused my phone to no longer charge. This did happen when I attempted to root the official OTA update with EasyRoot. It appears to happen to quite a few people according to the VZW local store rep I spoke to. It is unclear whether they were attempting to root and messed up or if it's just a glitch in the OTA update. I suspect the latter.

That's what I was sent too. It said that I was going to receive a certified like new a855. That is why I was so shocked when I opened up the box and it was a new D2. I wasn't even expecting it at all.
Who knows, Fort Worth might have just gotten a new shipment of D1's in. I guess I feel really lucky right now.

Just got the replacement phone, Droid 1 :(
It came with FroYo FRG22D as well.

This replacement phone is definitely used. Under the screen you can clearly see wear marks from sliding the keyboard. The power button also does not work correctly, so I'm having them send another replacement. Here's hoping it'll be a D2, but I doubt it.

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

Well if nobody here got a new D2 for free besides me, I wonder how many people got them. It must not be that many. I read about several others getting them on the Droid forums. There must have been a tiny window of opportunity when they were sending them out.
When I called in, I told them that I was getting tired of dealing with the POS replacement devices because they are usually worse than the one you are returning. After a bit of disputing, I asked to speak to the manager. He would only offer me a BB Storm 2, a BB Bold or Curve, a Moto Devour, a LG Ally, or LG Fathom. I told them that I didn't think that they were comparable to the D1, and that I think they should be able to replace my phone with a comparable model like the D2, X, or Incredible. The manager told me that they were NOT going to give me any of these... period. I agreed to try another D1 again. Then in 2 days, I opened up the box and it was a D2.
I have had my last 3 phones upgraded early and free by VZW. I started my smartphone collection with a $50 Omnia. 3 Months later, they upgraded me to a TP2. Then, 2 months later, they upgraded me to a Droid 1. And now after 8 months, they upgraded me to a D2. Call it luck I guess. I do spend around $2100/year though, and I have been a customer of theirs since day 1. That might make a difference, but probably not.

One other way to persuade them to accomodate you is to threaten porting out. Tell them you would like to pay the ETF and go to AT&T since VZW is not fulfulling your needs. They will quickly start offering up things. When I did this, they offered me 25% off of my service and a free upgrade. They would hardly let me go. My arguement was that if they are willing to do these things now, they should have done them before I complained. I didn't take it of course because I had to have a freaking POS iPhone 3Gs (which turned out to be a nightmare). I ported back in to VZW in 19 days. In the end, it is their responsibility to keep their high paying customers happy (to an extent).

timtampa 09-14-2010 04:11 PM

Re: Who wants a Droid 2?!?!

Well, my 2nd replacement Droid 1 arrived. This one had a working power button, however the camera button didn't work. I tried to fix it and it fell out! I was told to go into my local VZW store to get a replacement, knowing of course they wouldn't have it.

Here's the good part. I called VZW back and told them I was definitely not happy with 2 replacement phones being bad. The rep put me on hold to talk to his manager, about 4 minutes or so later he came back.
He said "we can send you a comparable replacement device". I'm thinking Droid Eris, Devour, some crappy model. Asking if I was happy with the Droid 1 as a phone, which I said I was for the most part, other than it being a bit slow at times.
He said "You can either have the Incredible or the Droid X". I was ecstatic!

I went for the Droid X as it has HDMI out and a larger screen. I honestly rarely use my physical keyboard so I can do without it. I have a very nice Samsung TV with DLNA and HDMI so this phone will work beautifully with it.

So, be a good customer and nicely explain you're very unhappy and they'll try to accommodate you. Though it may depend on the rep you get as well.

Note though, the original warranty still applies. If my new Droid X has an issue I better get it fixed before it expires in a few months.
