SMS......"Compose using......."

Handscent SMS displays inbound messages, but when I compose outbound, I get the GUI for the default SMS program, and I don't see the popup that used to give me a choice of which one I wanted to use anymore.

I want to get back to handscent exclusively....anyone know how to do that?

Clear the defaults on the stock app in settings. It should then allow you to choose again. You might need to do it with Handcent too to make sure everything is set right.

I had the same issue as OP, but I didn't have the options to clear defaults for either Handcent or Messaging. I'm not sure if Clear Data (in the Applications > Manage Applicatiosn) would work in this case, as I shortly thereafter flashed another ROM.

I just deleted the stock messaging app.
