Dashwire type application

So I don't know if any of you ever used Dashwire. It gives you the ability to send text messages from a website and back up contacts, images, etc...

I was hoping that someone who has switched to android can let me know if there is something similar that I can use with this platform. I have been looking around, but to no avail. I can't find anything comparable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Edit - Primarily I want to be able to send texts from my keyboard at work, so I don't need to be handing my phone. I can't install software on this computer, so I am looking for a web solution.

Thanks!

Hmmm I haven't used it for this, but I believe Google Voice lets you do that.

Yeah... I wish. I am in Canada, so no google voice for us yet - or navigator. So I am stuck with third party for the time being. Getting the milestone from Telus - so I just want to have things ready when I get it.

Thanks though.

Any other ideas?

Canada kicks ass. I'm sorry I don't know a way to do what you're trying to do. It really sucks how they locked down the Milestone in Canada. It's even more locked down than the European one :(

Here's a video that might make you smile... or cry.

Oh yeah, if there's a way to install the google voice app, you can get a work around for it with a US Number.

-get a magic jack for like 50 bucks and set it up with an auto forwarder to your Telus line. Have your google voice number set to go to the Magic jack number. Oh yeah, you can get an alberta 403 area code for google voice.

The main thing is trying to figure out how to install the Google Voice app on your phone. If you can, you'll be scott free... outside of the alberta number.

This not fit your needs exactly but if you connect your phone to your PC via PDANet, it supplies an SMS agent on the desktop. The problem is that you are then using PDANet and your phone to supply internet connectivity to the PC so it's not something you'd probably want up all day just to handle SMS when needed. I assume you'd like to just keep your regular connection but still SMS.

Edit: I just reread where you said you can't install software on the PC so never mind as PDANet requires installation. Need another cup of coffee. :)

I'm pretty sure dashwire has an android client. Like pretty kinda really sure. Let me check.

Edit: I was wrong. Shamefaced.

Re: Dashwire type application

Darn... Still looking for something that would allow me to do this.

It is too bad that Dashwire never developed for Android - it is a great concept. Send text messages from a web platform using your phone as the gateway or client.

I am really wanting something that would allow me to send messages from my own number/phone through the computer. I want this for work as it reduces reaching for the phone....

But these are my limitations.
It can't be WIFI or local network enabled as I cannot connect my phone to the company network (there is no WIFI here).
I can't install anything on my work PC as I don't have administration access.
And Google voice is no go... why? Cause I am Canadian, heh.

I know I am being demanding - and I would code something myself - I just wouldn't know where to start.

Any more suggestions.

Disregard this if you are still on Telus with a TP...but for people with Verizon...

You can just log onto your account and send a text message that way.
After you log in to My Verizon, select the phone you want to send the message from, scroll down a little & there is an option which allows you to select messages. In there is the option to send a text message.

so, I did kinda find something. It's called droidmessenger and installs a client app on the phone and allows you to use a website, over the internet (not intranet, or virtual network), to send texts from your phone. It isn't reliable though. Too bad.

If anyone else knows of anything.

Dashwire said over a year ago they would release a platform for android, but it appears that dashwire bight be on the downfall - pity.
