Need some quick help with recovery mode

I am trying to create a nandroid backup before flashing to Sholes 2.0.5. When I reboot into recovery, I get the triangle and exclamation point. I cannot get it into recovery mode it just stays on this unless I press the power button again. Is my recovery mode broken?

Ok. I got to the Android System Recovery menu, but at the bottom it says: E: Can't open/cache/recovery/command

I can only appy update, wip data, or wipe cache.

If you use the SMUpdater program, it will automatically make a nandroid backup for you.

No problems. That is how I rooted and everything the first time.

Ok. I just flashed 2.0.5 and it froze up on initial boot. I pulled the batt and rebooted. It boots up now but it locks up almost immediately after sliding the unlocker over. WTF??? Why am I having all of these problems? My phone doesn't want to run anyway but stock. I think it's time for this thing to go back to Verizon (after putting it all back to stock and unrooting).

Was alt+shift+delete working for rebooting or did you absolutely have to battery pull?

I didn't even try alt+shift+delete, I just pulled the batt. On 2.0.5, I have rebooted 10 or so times and everytime it locks up either immediately after I get past the lock screen or when I try to do anything at all. Eventually, I had to boot into recovery and install the last nandroid backup.
Maybe it's the luck of the draw with the Sholes mods. 2.0.2 and 2.0.3 are functional but terribly laggy and buggy for me. 2.0.5 is not even functional on my phone. The bad thing is that stock kicks all of their a$$es. Seeing that many of you have had good luck with the Sholes, I think much of this is specific to my particular phone. It is a replacement after all that was refurbished in 01/10. The original build is dated 45/09. That probably has nothing to do with it, but when I received the warranty replacement, the slider was already loose (tapping noise driving me insane) and the phone just doesn't feel built as well as my first one. It also lives in 1x mode 75% of the time. My original phone never dropped from 3G. This is a killer.
I have another replacement on the way. Hopefully it won't be a POS like this one is.

I have had better luck with bugless beast than sholes roms. Adynalyne put one up that works well for me too.
