Stuck on the red eye. How do I hard reset?

How do I hard reset a droid x? It will not come on. it is just stuck on the droid eye every time it turns on.

1 turn phone off

2 Hold Power and Home buttons for about 5 sec

3 Exclamation screen will appear, press Search button

4 Confirm

5 Press Yes/delete all user data then press OK

Was there something you did or installed that caused this. it would be helpful to know
