Looking for a Droid X...... WITH a keyboard!

I have been holding my breath for quite some time now, waiting to upgrade to a new phone (I had the TP1 from Verizon for a couple years, and then upgraded, for free, to a TP2 via Verizon's customer service dept), and although the TP2 is quite capable and I've enjoyed it profoundly - it is time, in my mind at least, to upgrade.

The problem that I face, although not a dire or life threatening one by any means, is WHEN to upgrade?

The Motorola X, even with the horribly integrated user interface I have read about, is still a crazed maniac of steroid pumping proportions - AND I LIKE THAT! However... I am a die hard sliding keyboard junkie, and simply won't drop hundreds of dollars on ANYTHING that will take up vital and precious phone-screen real estate, just so I can clumsily attempt to mash virtual buttons with my thumbs.

So my question is... does anyone know of a Verizon device slated to arrive within 2010 at any point in time, that is identical (or, as a wish-in-vain even MORE powerful) to the Droid X, with a keyboard?

The Droid X's processor, camera, and overall build make it a near must-have for me, but it missed the mark without a keyboard - much like the forthcoming (August 12th) Droid-2 missed the mark due to a sub-par increase in overall system specs.

Thanks for any input! :)

I was like you. I have used physical keyboards on every WM pda I've owned. I waited until I read the great reviews on the Droid X keyboard before making th switch. I must tell you that the I type faster on my DX virtual keyboard than I did on my TP2 keyboard. The auto correct is just that good. I only use it in landscape mode and I'm so happy I made the switch. My wife has had the first Droid since Nov of last year. I loved the phone but hated the keyboard. I was going to wait until the Droid 2 comes out next month but I'm glad I didn't. The screen and virtual keyboard on the Droid X are exceptional. You can try (if you can get your hands on one) the Droid X for 30 days and return it if you don't like it. But if you are like me you will end up keeping it. Good Luck

Thank you so much... I had no idea you could try a phone and then return it - this is offered through Verizon? I feel like there would be strings attached, knowing how they operation - where I would have to jump through 11 hoops to cancel the phone's "auto charge" after 30 days.

I would love to try the X for 30 days, but just don't want to have to sign a new contract for it, my Verizon TP2 is out of contract and I can upgrade, so I don't want to be cornered into anything.

Awwww man, I'm not a new customer. I knew there was a catch :(

Well, technically I was/am an Alltel customer that got migrated over to Verizon, but I am not actually a Verizon customer right now until I buy a new device from what I understand.

PS: Plus the Sam's Club I go to has the X out for display, but it is a fake... just a piece of formed plastic with a screen sticker emulating the real phone's look :(

There is no catch to the 30 day thing.

Anybody can buy a new VZ phone & return it with no strings attached within 30 days.

Take the time to try Swype as well. If you have a TP2, you can find a .cab for it in various places (or flash one of the many custom roms around here).

Swype is the bomb of virtual keyboards, but it takes a little getting used to.

Make sure you try some of the various other KB's that are available. The stock KB works well because of the large screen, but I have been experimenting with other options & there are a couple I really like.

People swear by Swype, but I personally hate it. I tried it in my TP2 & now the X & I just don't get it. It works for me, but for me anyway is by far the slowest option.

Right now, I switch back & forth between the stock multi-touch KB & TouchPal & Smart KB Pro. I used to use TouchPal all the time in my TP2 & I absolutely loved it. The Android version is not quite as good as the WM version, but it's close & Smart KB Pro works great.

I have owned/flashed WM PPC's back to the xv6700 & this is my first one with no hardware KB & I absolutely love the thing.
