Be careful mucking with the framework Big. Without a recovery option at this point, several people have gotten themselves stuck in a boot-loop.

Quick question.. when you say muck with the framework what do you mean?

i have my apk's and i go into the res/drawable folder to look at the png's....
Is altering a png to the exact dimensions and specs as original altering the framework? i have my png's but want to start testing on my device.. BUT i don't want a brick or the cost of insurance replacement either...

i have looked at the android developer site and have considered building for market... only cost $25 to get started..... any advice there? Anyone?

Of course they would be free if i did :)

The consensus seems to be that just replacing png's is probably safe. The key word here is 'probably'. If something goes wrong, the phone will get stuck in a boot loop and I don't think anyone has figured out how to cure it just yet.
Once its in boot loop, it won't connect to ADB, so you can't push the old framework back. Even if you make a copy/.BAK of the file, I don't think you have any access to rename/copy that file when its too late.

I'm still very much a newbie on android internals, but it appears that all the 'goodies' are in framework-res.apk. And that's where the potential boot-loop issues are coming from.

Once there is a full flash recovery option available, I think it will be much safer to tinker. At this moment, I am still a little too hesitant to flash any of the custom taskbars and/or themes that require metamorph.

If I'm reading between the lines correctly, you may be able to recover from a bad framework-res.apk file by re-applying the .604 update. As long as you haven't removed any of the stock apk's.

copied to storage card
used ASTRO to install

I just tried to install the beautiful widget.apk

I copied it to the card in my phone & tried to install from there.

I click on it & it says "application will replace another app". I say OK, it asks "do you want to install this application?" I click install, it says installing & looks like it is, then I get a screen saying "!application not installed" & the only option to click is "done"

What am I doing wrong??

Try emailing to yourself and installing from there.... Also once successfully installed you will have to delete off of home screen and add back for changes to take effect.... That is only when you already have installed....

How about the CurveFish toggles. They are pretty popular in general (I use the Bluetooth and WiFi ones). I haven't tried their GPS, so not positive it does actual toggle.
Update: Just tried it. It does offer a toggle mode, but it FC's on me (I'm on Froyo - might be a problem with that)

You will need to be rooted to do that. There is a nice thread over on XDA with a variety of taskbars and notification panels you can use.

If/when you upgrade to Froyo, the modifications get a little bit harder. There is some work being put into it, but doesn't appear to be quite as easy.

+1 for a black taskbar with easy install like the clocks. The white taskbar doesnt go well with dark backgrounds. I am rooted but thats as far as i got. what other apps do i need from the market to install things. Also where do i get a terminal emulator. I see you need that for a lot of installs...especially froyo. I have no clue about android yet...still in the wm groove, god cab files made life much simpler.

Hey Big, not sure if your still checking this thread, but in case you are, can you make a version of Fancy Widget Split with white numbers?

I tried combining the white numbers from one of the others with the split one, then tried to sign using the method you had on the other thread, but, it doesn't seem to work for me, even after updating the java JDK on my machine.

Anyway, appreciate all your efforts.
