Well, the first thing is to choose a particular kitchen.

There's a great site - www.PPCKitchen.org - that has a good beginner oriented kitchen (BuildOS), and lots of info on how to build. That's where I started.

But I quickly moved to Calkulin's version of the Ervius Visual Kitchen - it's got everything you need to build a ROM, and it's easy to add customizations to.
