NEW LG Fathom Owner

hello guys,

i'm a previous owner of the following phones -

sch-i730
sch-i760

my i760 finally stopped working and verizon replaced it with an LG Fathom.

this is the only site i could find that has a section dedicated to this phone.

are there any programs i should look forward to installing?(i760 had windows 6.1).. i'm new to windows 6.5.

i was looking for a programs like cm wifi hotspot... i tried using the wvga version from xda-developers - [App]HTC CM Wifi Internet Sharing[21/07/2009] - Page 40 - xda-developers but i couldn't get it to work.

i have an unlimited data plan(grandfathered) from my previous phone and wanted to keep taking advantage of it.

thank you guys

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

Absolutely get chainfire's autoclosepatch found on xda. Set your limits to close programs at 3 Mb ram and reopen at 5. When I moved from the SCH-i760, I noticed that running more than 2-3 programs was difficult, as they would dissapear from the running programs list. My i760 would become slow at times, but still would not close programs so aggressively.

Welcome to the forum, and I truly think that the LG Fathom is the best winmo phone ever made (as there will be no more winmo phones).

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

you can try some of my patches. Get stock wm texting and flash to the v5 Rom if you feel daring.
my patches are on my downloads page at pizzaboy192.com/downloads/
I would suggest wmwifirouter for hotspot. Works wonders with that data plan (I have it too)
enjoy

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

thanks guys,

i'm having the worst time with this phone :( , i can't find any cooked roms, or any user support really except for this site.

ics instrui didn't work on this phone, i found a post on monaco but that member didn't explain how he got it to work.

i'm using wmwifirouter as pizzaboy recommended but its extremely slow(tethered via usb) vs. ics...

my buddies have htc winmo phones and they all the wonderful htc programs, one of them being cm's wifi program(free)...

my sch-i760 had better support, i even asked verizon if they had any tp2's .... they didn't.

guys, i may return this phone.. i may have to go winphone7... srs... and an htc at that.

i tried using opera mini 5.1.. didnt work well, every time i tried to access the settings option, the program closed.

have opera mobile 10 but i need to use my finger nail to click on links... i have skinny fingers and it only highlights...

-what browser are you guys using.. PIE is horrible... takes too long to load..

-are you guys using a piggy back sms/mms program?

this phone is my only access to the internet/emails, etc... usb or wifi tethering expands my capacity .. i sell items on craigslist, ebay.. etc

i'm not going to give up just yet, i will play around with the phone for the next couple of days and hopefully get this thing working...

shortly i will be installing chainfires autoclose patch as per trysomeothertime's suggestion.

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

i am typingt his from my phone using opera 10. double tapping on the screen makes it zoom, and then the phone compensates for a 'finger mash' on the screen as a click.
i use WMWiFirouter witht he 3g to wifi mode. works well.
if you want a free teather app, you can update to the v7 rom, loose a bit of stability, but get a verizon teather app.
going to windows phone 7 will lock you out of teather completely until verizon certifies the latest update.
the reason there's no roms (yet) is becaise the phone came out only a few months before wp7 and people just didn't try to hack it.
i know the pain about the tp2. my mom broke hers last year, and ended up getting our verizon rep to call 72 different verizon stores in the midwest before we found one with a tp2 left. might be one of the last.
i'll be glad to help you with the software help. i've got some apps that i could send you if you can't seem to find the devs to buy them anymore.
plus, i would really suggest removing the arcsoft crap. there's a thread on here by me on how to do it. (arcsoft be gone)

thank you,

i'm going to look for your write up.. i've been a member here since 2007 and never posted, i was a lurker and used the site to setup up my i760... i love this place...

thank you for the software help... i'm going to keep this phone and customize it as much as i can.

what programs are you using/have installed on your fathom?

i may have a .cab of wvga swype.. would you be interested in that.. i donated to the then developer and he gave me a pre-registered .cab, swyped worked will on my i760(qvga), if i have the wvga, i'll give it a go...

if i don't, can you mod the qvga version over to wvga?

i'm going to use opera 10 more and see if i can modify my finger strokes to work with it.

thank you guys and thank you pizzaboy, i really want this phone to work for me....

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

Here's what I've got on my Fathom:
AgEye G-Alarm
My Arcsoft-Be-Gone
a patch I made to enable Threaded Email.
WmWiFiRouter (unlocked trial)
ArkSwitch
Chainfire Autoclosepatch with Insanity settings
SRS WOWHD (Boosts audio output to speakers and out the main speaker)
AppToDate
memMaid
QuickGPS Lite
Google Maps
Advanced Config
Total Commander
BattLineSvc -- A MUST
PHM Regedit
SPB Backup
AMeBa (on XDA, customizes the little X in the corner, single tap is minimize, press-and-hold force closes the app)
WiFiFoFum 2
PocketTwit
Slick messenger
Skype

I know the WVGA version of Swype is installable on the phone, but because of the physical keyboard layout, Swype isn't as good as it could be. Good thing that you can just press and hold on the SIP show button and change your SIP to whatever you want.

I've got over 3GB of .cab files on my storage card that I've had installed at one time or another. FPSECE is another good one. The phone is fast enough to emulate any PS1 game you throw at it.
I've also got Taskanium installed. Shows tasks on your Titanium interface.

We've got people starting to finally look into flashing custom ROMs. Mostly because they've discovered a way to boot Android off the SD card (useless to any Verizon user as the main Dev is in India and uses GSM networks, so no CDMA support yet)

I would suggest the V5 rom out of any rom from LG. V7 is too buggy to have even been released. V5 can be patched up to run smoothly.

I've also got a custom lockscreen and theme because I don't like the stock ones.

Hope some of that helps.

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

a few things after using my fathom..

the data/hotsync cable i was given is defective.. the phone soft reset 2x... then it would take long to sync with my pc.

a buddy had a blackberry with the same mini-usb cable, i used it and behold, my fathom sinked in seconds and not minutes.

as for the issues i was having, i went a ahead and did a hard reset... that fixed my interface issues..

what a great little phone.... is anyone using the full version of spb mobile shell?

now i'm confident on going through with pizzaboy's arcsoft removal guide...

i am really liking this phone.. wmwifirouter is working flawlessly and so far 2 droids, 1 iphone, 1 mac and a couple of pcs can accept the signal YAY! this is the connectivity i needed..

what gps programs do fathom users prefer? google maps, windows live???

anyone have luck using overclocking software? i used xcpuscalar with great success on my i730.. could never get it to work on my i760.

thanks again pb

in all honesty, 1ghz of cpu power is plenty. underclocking would be better to get more battery life.

a lot of the apps I have used, were never updated for wm6.5.x, and they still work fine.

good luck.

You mentioned gps. I use Garmin mobile xt, but since day 1, GPS fix was just terrible. Often it took 10 minutes for a lock, but sometimes it wouldn't work at all. Any idea wha settings to tweak, and what settings to use in QuickGPS?

Thanks

On my phone I use Google Maps (Unlimited Data plan) and QuickGPS. Alternatively, you can create a shortcut to GPSOneApp.exe in the windows folder.
I have QuickGPS Lite 1.5 from freewarepocketpc (or one of those sites, I can just attach it if you can't find it. I think I got it from oMarket)
All I did options wise was to set it to the US server, and push the "return" button.
Let it download the new settings, fire up Google Maps and within a few seconds it should lock.

Other thing I did was set the GPS to COM4. I found that tip somewhere else. Works well for alot of older programs that rely on GPS. (You need to set it to COM4 in both Windows Mobile Settings and in Google Maps settings for it to work that way though. Otherwise Automatic works fine as well.

good question... i haven't figured out how to enable gps on my phone yet.

pizzaboy many of my issues have been resolved.

i had posted that i couldn't use opera... i was the problem. on my old i760 you had to press firmly on the screen to click on links.. i was doing the same with the fathom.. the screen has better sensitivity. i just tap the screen and the option/function/link is selected...WOW!

verizon included an extended battery but the incorrect batter cover... i called them and 2x they sent the wrong cover... hopefully this time it gets resolve.

i noticed that when i tether via wireless or cable, if the battery is low it directly affects internet performance.

on my old i760 i could tether via usb and it would charge the phone at the same time, with the fathom i can't, even though the recharging icon is displayed in the sys tray.

is this only an issue with extended batteries? will having an unextended battery resolve this.

i had an issue today with ebay.. on ie and opera. i won an auction, i clicked the pay it now function and it would not work. i did a soft reset, when back to the auction and i still couldn't use that function.

does ebay/amazon/paypal have apps for wm6.5?

i'm really liking this phone... its much much better than my i760.. wmwifirouter is still working flawlessly... every device i've used so far has been able to connect to my fathoms signal.

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

About the battery: Didn't know there was an extended one. Might have to look into that. I've been using the standard one and get a good day out of it (I charge it every night. Might as well.)
About the USB charging. You need atleast a 1A USB port (You can either make your own charge+data cable that goes into the phone charger for power and PC for data. I've got one at home (I'm at school, so I can't share pictures) but it works). My desktop provides "3x power" so I haven't had those issues. I also have had good luck using WiFi or Bluetooth as a network setup.
The Fathom likes to burn battery while on 3g. It's a common problem and I haven't found a solution yet. It seems to work best if you have it charged or close to it while tethered. I had issues with most sites that you can buy stuff with on this phone (and a HTC TP2) I just chalk it up to dated phone browser VS modern webpage stuff.

Don't think there's apps for Ebay\Amazon\Paypal, but there's probably a solution. You could try using PIE for buying stuff.

I saw on XDA that another user has found a way to create custom ROMs, but they haven't posted much about it for over a month. Hopefully they get somewhere soon. I want a nicer, cleaner, proper ROM.

Re: NEW LG Fathom Owner

Pizzaboy192, which US server are you using?

What are the cold start times with/without QuickGPS?

Also did you find that you get a significant battery life decrease when you keep GPS on at all times?

Thanks!

Cold start for full phone boot or just GPS lock?
Full boot hasn't changed. You have to tell quickGPS to download a file each time.
Lock times:
Without: 5-6Minutes if it ever does.
With: 15 seconds - 2 minutes. Guaranteed lock if you've got decent cell coverage (not being in a building\basement)

the version of QuickGPS Lite (notice the Lite part) means that I tell it to download the file whenever I want, not at boot. In settings, it has the server pre-defined for the file. I just clicked the US radio button and hit apply.

I have been able to successfully run the phone for a full day in town (from 9AM to 5PM) with a GPS lock and didn't notice too much of a difference between that and a normal day of use for me in class (7AM to 3PM)
If I'm using an application that is written poorly and keeps the screen on while locked, there is noticeable drain from using the display. You can get about 10 hours of locked GPS with time to spare.

I haven't turned off the "Location On" setting on my phone since I got it. I can go about 18 hours on a charge easily. (7AM to 12AM usually, sometimes up to 2AM). Battery drains faster with a GPS lock, but it won't even try to lock until an application requests it. I also keep bluetooth on as well. No difference between this semester and last semester when I kept bluetooth off (got a headset this summer, hence the change)
I have noticed an increase between battery life between V7 and V5. V5 ROM gives me a good 2+ hours of extra life over the V7 rom (various reasons, less RAM used, no GPRS Attach issues.)
V5 rom also seems more stable. I haven't had to soft-reset my phone in over a week. V7 was about once a day from some random crash. I haven't done a pure restart yet, as I restored from a V7 backup. It could be even better if I start from scratch (but that requires time)

Hope some of that helps.

Thanks for the replies, pizzaboy192! I recently gave up my Fathom and swapped it for an HTC Trophy. I was planning to buy another Fathom, as Windows Phone 7 is really not working out for me as well as I thought it would.

If I buy the unlocked version from amazon, it will probably come with V4 on it. Do you know how to update from V4 to V5 and NOT V7?

(I used V7, and the 3G connection drops would drive me crazy...it would often just disconnect ALL wireless whatsoever for a few minutes!)

Thanks again

I posted a modified walkthrough on my blog. (it is a few posts back)
I link to another blog and give the proper commands to flash v5 to it.
blog is at pizzaboy192.com/blog/ (redirects to WordPress)

the v5 Rom file is available at lg-phones.com (I think)
I'm on my tablet right now, so I hope this isn't too vague for you. I did it myself so I can help you through it too.

didn't even think of uploading the Rom and tools to my site. Might have to do that. Thanks for the mirror of the Rom though.

as per tablet:it is indeed the TouchPad. Got 2 during the sale. Only reinforces my dislike for on-screen keyboards.
I have put preware on it, overclocked it to 1.5ghz and applied plenty of patches. No ubuntu or android. I like webOS.

The biggest change from V4 to V5 that I know of is the update from Office 2007 to 2010. It also updates nearly all the base OS modules to a newer one.
My Girlfriend hasn't updated from V4 yet, and she hasn't seen too many differences from my V5 Fathom. Biggest one I've seen is how notifications are handled. Not too big of one though.
