SMS Tones
 

Does anyone know of a way to set a different sms tone for different contacts like there is for ringtones?

I don't know about that, but if it is anything like adding custom sms tones it will be a bit of a pain. Unless there is an app out there, I would imagine it would require a JB

The phone is jailbroken. I was hoping for a cydia app that would add a field in the contact list.

there are tons of "themes" that set your unlock sound, text sound, etc... You can either download them from Cydia, or download them onto your computer and SSH them into your themes folder and activate using Winterboard.

Ive already ssh'ed different sounds. What I want to do is have a different sound for when my girlfriend texts me than when my dad texts me. Similar to what you can already do with ringtones.

Do yourself a favor and get an app called ToneFxs from Cydia. Makes custom tones on the iPhone simple.

You can set a different ringtone for each contact but you cant do that for sms sounds. I figured out how to make it announce the name of the person so I dont really need to do this. If you want it to announce the name, the cydia app I used is icallannounce.
