Total Noob here, need help

HI all first post on this great site. I in the process of getting a sprint htc touch vogue with the wm6.1 on it. It should arrive wednesday or thursday so I've been trying to read up on how to install custom roms and everything. It's a lot to take in, so thought I would get a jump on it before phone gets here. I found this tutorial and was wondering if this would work for the touch too.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=33857

Is the correct unlocker in that for the vogue, or do I need a different unlocker.

thanks for any help and pointers.

I cannot tell you how many times I post this for noobs. DO NOT BE IN A HURRY TO FLASH YOUR DEVICE. Do you know what your device will do without the custom ROM? What do you expect of the custom ROM? Are you comfortable with WinMo? Comfortable with your device? Are you intimately familiar with the flashing process? If you cannot confidently answer these questions, do not flash your device. I know this may seem a little harsh, but a lot of the questions we get from noobs are a result of being in a hurry to flash, and consequently bricking their devices. On the other hand, if you really know what you're doing, have at it and welcome to Geekdom.

Have to agree with GeekCop, give it at least a week or two to get to know the phone before you get all antsy. Nothing wrong with trying it stock so you can appreciate the upgrades and make meaningful decisions about what you want in a custom ROM.

To answer your question though, NO! That unlocker is for the HTC Titan AKA the Sprint Mogul AKA Verizon XV6800. It WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE. You found the vogue forums, the Vogue upgrade forums are a subforum of the one you posted this in. Read ALL OF THE STICKIES at the top of the upgrade forum. It will help you tremendously to understand the process.

EDIT: Here is the link to the Vogue Upgrades Forum: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=59. If I were you, I would settle in for a lot of reading. The most important part of flashing and customizing your phone is to understand what the process is, where it can go wrong, and how to fix it if it does. The last thing you want to do is to be flashing your phone, have something go wrong, and THEN be searching for an answer while your phone is broken. Best to know ahead of time!

Thanks guys to the replys, I've been trying to read and learn. I guess the main reason I want to flash is all the neat skins, and stuff. If there is a way to put a different skin on the phone without flashing that would work for me. My buddy has a sprint vogue, and I'm looking to make it look like the iphone or better. The main reason I got the vogue is for the phone as modem, it works with vista 64 perfectly. The titan tutorial was well written, and helped me understand the jist of flashing I guess. I was hoping to run across a vogue tutorial too. I'll wait until I get my vogue and see how things go with it. It supposed to have wm 6.1, which I hope makes it revA. I'll keep reading.

As far as I know there is no reason you have to flash your device in order to install custom themes. Check out the themes thread http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31
just make sure a theme is compatible with your device before installing it.

If you want to use the today screen type screen you can make your own themes. Check out ... http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=22087

If you want the TF2D type themes like in here....http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=37923
you'll need to install Manila and Manila customizer for the TF2D type.

Both of those type of themes do not require any flashing of a custom ROM.

I guess what i'm trying to figure out now is does the themes only change the backgrounds or do they also give you different programs like a new cube interface, the iphone interface and stuff like that. I thought the rom flashes would include everything i would need, instead of having to install all the individual programs. Or am I looking at this all wrong.

You gotta load it and play with it. You dont have to have a custom rom to change the look and performance of the phone. You can have your iphone by using one of the themes. Start with sbmobile shell. Its a free trial and you can use it for a few weeks for free. Theres a bunch of themes that you can apply to the sb mobile shell and there is a huge thread here and xda that will give you the themes. You got an afew iphones in there also. Play around with a few of the themes in spb then load then click the third link below to add this tool. It will give you a few more weeks of daytime fun with your spb theme.

After that you can load some of the other themes that work with the stock rom and play with them. Be sure to load s2u2 if you haven't yet and get you iphone jones from that also. This should entertain you for awhile.

A rom is a custom version of the Windows Mobile operating system that is already on your phone. Like if you have Windows XP from Microsoft, but then you are on Limewire and dl WinXP Black. It's still windows at its base, but has custom tweaks and programs already installed by the creator. I hope that that makes sense.
