are GPS apps using data.

I was looking at my vz bill. I have managed to rack up some $$.
I have been using GPS views, HTC GPS tool, Visual GPSce and Garmin. are any of these pulling or using data?

if i am not mistaking, many apps use data to download the satellite position and get a faster fix. U can disable data in settings, but the lock time will be much greater.

thanks for the info. I will have to learn to live with slow locks.

If you are using aGPS "assistance" you are using the towers, so yes your data plan would be charged. You need to change your settings to Mode=0 if you don't want to be charged or include the 5mb plan for $20.

JoshKeller;

what if I change the IP port to telus or alltel? I would not be using VZ towers, would I still get charged?

thanks

its not like that although I can see how logic would make one think so

changing the port will still incur data though Verizon to get to the IP you want

The settings is a registry setting you need to change to 0 (zero) to stop aGPS from running still allowing GPS itself to occur

aGPS (assisted GPS) utilizes towers to help gain a fast location with sats - disabling this will rely on sat locks only

Not sure Im explaining it well but trying LOL

I guess sometimes logic+common sense does not really solve problems.

lol

I would change both, EnableAGPS=0 and Mode=0, though EnableAGPS should do it alone.

Detroit Doug is correct. You could point the aGPS IP to yahoo.com and although it won't help anything it will still cost you money until you turn these two reg keys =0.

Yeah, many GPS apps use the Internet for mapping, such as Google Maps. Now, Standalone GPS is completly free, but takes longer to get a lock. The "aGPS" will use just a slight amount of KB. And to disable aGPS you need to kill it in QSPT, the regedit doesn't do it, I tried it.
