Re: Tethering

Here's the good news: There is a program to do this, called PdaNet by June Fabrics.

Here's the bad news: The software costs $34 (one time and still way cheaper than the ~$60 a month for phone as modem plans)

Here's the disclaimer: Using your phone in this manner violates the contract (terms of use) between you and your carrier. (then again, I've been using this program for close to a year now without any issue.)

Link for the software: http://junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php

Hope this helps,
Robb

Re: Tethering

It may be that some dont understand what you are asking for. Tethering to from what to what to do what? You can tether your phone to your pc and access the web that way if that is what you are trying to do. In that case you are using your pc's internet connection so your phone will not charge data.

If you are trying to go the other way (use your phone as an access point to the web for your pc) you are SOL. You will be charged for data usage on the phone end in that case.

Re: Tethering

sorry,
I want to tether my phone to my laptop so when im in an area with no wifi,I can access the internet. I have heard of some roms that already have the reg edit done, but i like my stock bell rom, i just wanted to do the reg edit myself. I hope this helps.

thanks.

I'd like to have it too. Since I need this tethering only occasionally,
it does not justify burning a custom ROM instead of Bell's one
(which is very good otherwise).

I found the following thread where the reg edits are described for Sprint (?),
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=40658
and my guess is that they need to be modified for Bell
and then TESTED,
but the cab with the reg edits from that thread
is here:

Internet Sharing FIX.zip

I'm not sure if the reg edits for sprint and verizon phones is the same as for Bell. I'll do some looking and let you know.

Re: Tethering

getting closer to what ur searching for.

tether phone to laptop to get wifi from yr phone? if thats what ur wanting it wont work without going thru phone carrier and charging data. phone has no wifi capabilities.

tethering the other way would work if your laptop had wifi but that only gets you on the wifi network of the laptop.

Re: Tethering

I tether my pc through my vogue for internet access. I have been doing it for about 3 months and have got no extra charges from Sprint. The only way I have found to do it was to install one of the custom ROMs, like WDM's or OMJ's, that already has the tether "fix" built into it. I don't know where to make just the registry edit to fix it without flashing a new rom.

By the way, I would highly recommend flashing either of their ROM's!

edit - oops, just realized you're not a sprint customer...not sure what you can do then

well, my guess, they have to be very close, apart from some obvious
changes in names (e.g. ``Bell connection`` instead of the ``sprint`` one)..

Besides, I know from the time I had them installed, that NFSFAN`s
series ROMs have tethering fixes built in, so one can
extract them from the registry and compare them with the sprint regedits ..

having said this, I have no time to do this, but if someone will
dig into that and publish a set of reg fxes for Bell, I``ll applaude loudly...

that would be great if someone could do that, if i knew how, i would do it myself.

Re: Tethering

If you have unlimited internet I can see why you wouldnt be charged for data. but to have internet through your phone carrier and not be charged via a reg edit or rom upgrade is interesting. are u sure you are getting internet for free?

if that were the case then you would have internet on your phone through the rom upgrade or reg edit everywhere not just when tethering. without wifi, the phone accesses the internet through the cell towers. and for them to not charge you is hard to believe. i suspect you have unlim data.

1) you need to install NfSFAN's rom (that's what I do not want to do at the moment), or it will be greqat to have someone here with that ROM already installed

2) "Total Commander" for WM has registry editing functions,
so you can see/change the entries on your cellphone, IF you have

3) cab posted earlier in this section has all the needed registry
changes for Sprint documented in one of the files.. you can unpack
cab on you PC (also using e.g "total commander" for PC), adn compare the data with those from NFSAN's rom..

Cheers!

Re: Tethering

what you need to do is get into the service setting. open the phone program and dial ##778# or whatever it is for your provider. I have a different dialer skin so that is what I press. then tap edit, enter 000000. once it comes up to the next screen press view info then select M.I.P default Profile. then the 3rd line down you should see DUN NAI. highlight it then press menu, edit then enter your username for your data network. (it should be the same setting as the NAI above it) then press ok, ok to reboot. then tether away without paying the ridiculous tethering fee. my only suggestion is keep it around 5GB a month or they might start investigating why you are using so much data.

thank you for the info.. For Bell, however, these entries are organized slighly differently, first of all there are 6 profiles, out of them two working profiles (with the phone@...bell.ca entries filled in), namely
"m.ip" and "services",
neither of them has "DUN NAI", there are only NAI entries..

Additionally (in QPST) one can see the "tethering NAI" entry in both profiles, and it is empty...

any suggestions?

Re: Tethering

haha this is kinda funny, who knew tethering would be so difficult. I wish there were more people with bell phones that tethered, that way we could find a solution
