Changing An Icon For A Program or Shortcut?

I added a new program that doesn't have an icon so the program shows up as a blank square.

Are there instructions to add or change an icon posted anywhere?

Also are there sites that have icon libraries available?

I did a search and didn't find anything.

Please help.

The program is Pocketmeasureconvert. http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-...alculator.html

Thanks for the reply.

Are there instructions in one of those links that explain how to get the chosen icon into the program of choice?

You would have to edit the .lnk file to point to the icon you want, and even then it would only work if you're using the shortcut. If you're looking at the .exe itself, the icon will still be the little white box.

You might find the author's email and send him a suggestion for an icon, or even a sample. Icons are hard-coded into the .exe, so only he/she could make the change correctly.

Edit: His email is listed on the page you linked to. I'd give him a buzz if I were you. :-D

I'd be very interested in just editing the *.lnk file but since I don't know the EXACT thing to do, I would need a little help.

Can you put together a quick and dirty example and I could use it as a template to create my own version?

I would only be accessing the lnk file.

Alright, after a little bit of investigating I found out a few things:

1) You have to have a .dll for a replacement icon

2) You can hand-edit a .lnk file, but only using a text editor on a computer (not PPC)

I found a program that will allow you to change icons and even provides a .dll.

http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?.../m_sksmgr.html

unzip the CAB and the QVGA dll in main memory (the program won't find the dll if it's not in the root folder). Run the cab and choose your shortcut (it displays shortcuts from the Programs folder).

It has a 14 day trial, but has full functionality during those 14 days (except a pop-up when you run and close the app).

Enjoy!

Edit: If you want to edit manually, the format of the shortcut would be:

60#"\Program Files\PowerUI\PowerUI.exe"?\sksmgr_icons.dll,-1073

The first number is the number of characters after the pound sign.

The pound sign is the dividing point between character count and target.

The target is surrounded by quotation marks.

The question mark is the dividing point between the target and the dll location.

The dll location is not in quotation marks.

The comma is the dividing point between the dll location and the icon pointer.

The icon pointer is a number which represents an icon within the dll.

:-D

You can edit LNK shortcut files on your PPC. I do it with Pocket NotePad by Tillanosoft, but you might even be able to use WordMobile, by making sure it saves your edit with LNK extension, instead of DOCX, or whatever. A handy program for locating good icons already available in DLLs or other EXEs currently installed on your device is rViewer by Vicott Wong, who wrote an excellent tutorial how-to with good links on his blog, here:

Musicman247 is very knowledgeable, helpful, and has provided perhaps all you need. Still, Vicott's info can help you see it from another angle.

Does anyone know how to create a .dll of an icon file (say from a .ico or a .bmp or a .png file)?

Thanks.
