GPS questions

I had gps working with google maps and garmin. Verizon with xv6900, updated radio 3.43.50, custom rom or the verizon leaked rom had it working with both.

Can someone clarify for me if gps will work without a data connection? Since i have canceled my data plan i have not been able to get a lock so that make sense.

Is there a gps reciever that windows mobile should find that gets locked down by the verizon customizations?

Re: GPS questions

Data is required to run either Google maps or Windows Live Search, but the GPS ought to work fine with other software. Garmin has just released the 2009 version of its Mobile XT which is available at www.buygpsnow.com Don't buy Wayfinder....I tried a 5 day free trial by going to na.getwf.com though the free 5 day trial ought to tell you if the GPS works without a data connection. Try and do this while ActiveSync'ed. Start>Settings>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks and in there, you should have "My Work Network" set up to do this. In "Proxy Settings" check the box that says "this connects to the Internet."

This makes sense as location is done by satellite and tower.

Now if a program is using location and trying to access, say mapping as well then the data will come in to play.

I had data briefly and had google maps working and at the time i was able to get garmin navigator xt to work also but i haven't been able to get a lock since i canceled data. I assumed that gps was part of the phone and google maps only used data for the map details.

Verizon is a pain for crippling their phones...
