I was able to get GPS working just fine with the stock rom and TomTom. It just took awhile for it to get going.

A quick question for those who have had luck with the AGPS hack: Will the registry modification work or will I need to do the entire thing?

Regardless, I'm happy to report that GPS does work just fine out of the box, you just need to make sure you are in a good area to lock onto the signal. I drove around with the phone on my dash (with a clear view through the front window) to lock my first signal. I had little luck just walking around the outside of the office.

Shadowtech's hack works exceptionally well. I have TomTom on my touch as well and was having to wait up to 5 min. on occasion for a GPS lock and then only 3-4 satellites. After the full hack, including the registry edits, I get locks in under a minute both inside and outside with 7-9 satellites! Just carefully follow the directions and you should be fine.

Thanks so much for the confidence to get me to try this, you're are correct, works fantastic now, even inside!

For those who are wanting to take the plunge, here is what I did. I started with the official Alltel Touch upgrade. I enabled the Location Radio, Set the GPS Up (Com 4, No Hardware Port, 4800 baud, Auto Management) and then soft reset. I then went through shadow-techs excellent thread (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=36377). I used the Alltel .cab there rather than editting the registry. Following the tutorial exactly, reseting when it suggest, and I now have my GPS responding quickly even inside! Thanks to everyone that makes this community what it is!

After I applied the ROM update and the GPS hacks, google maps finally works! WOOHOO!:headbang:

On the down side, I can't seem to receive contacts via bluetooth anymore. This worked perfectly before the update, but now i just get a message on the other phone that says 'unable to connect' Has anyone else had this problem?

I can SEND contacts via bluetooth without a problem.

Man I am so tempted to do this i'm just kinda hating and definitely not looking forward to reinstalling all of the programs I have on the phone. Looks like im going to go ahead and backup all of my files and do it.

it may just be me but since I have upgraded (actually downgraded) to the Alltel radio I am almost positive that I have better reception. At least from the same locations I am getting better dBm readings when i put it in debug, i have more bars and I was able to get a phone call in a spot today that I never have. I previously had the bell radio with a ppckitchen rom with the latest PRL.

Also I had to go back to a ppckitchen ROM because I used SPB Backup for PIM / Texts Backup, the only option I didn't select was system data. After the restore the phone was unusable and would give me an error every time about cprog.exe. I am going to try and backup with dotFred and see if that works.

Thanks,
Ben

Ben,

Can you confirm that you were using the 3.42.50 and that installing this radio and downgrading to 3.42.30, your reception has improved as you described above?

Best regards,
