Gps Detecion!!!!
Can a service provider detect if I'm using or have used GPS on my phone with the custom roms?
|
Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
Of course, with their custom-rom-gps-detection algorithms! You have to installed the custom-rom-gps-detection stealth patch to get around it!

Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
where can i find the patch??
|
Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
Dont worry about it.

Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
he was f'ing with you. what a piece of $hit! I don't think they can tell.. I have been using GPS with a custom ROM for about 6 months and Alltel hasn't said a damn word to me...

Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
As long as you are not using the carriers custom GPS app they cannot tell squat and will not be billing you. The phone itself is traceable by the carrier but they cannot tell if you are using the GPS. You have the option to turn off the traceability of your phone for all but the 911 services, it is somewhere in your settings.

i believe the T&E actually says "Emergency Services", which is a pretty broad description. But, the way I look at it - they can see this information (my GPS positioning) regardless if I access that infromation or not. They had access to that information on my POS Samsung M300, or any other entry level phone. By accessing thisinformation myself, i'm not giving them up anything that they don't already know. |
Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
The HTC Vogue uses GPS-A - a virtual GPS system based on triangulation from towers not direct access to satellites themselves as a actual GPS system does
All your carrier will see is a consistent data signal whilst using your GPS application (hence the reason your battery drains so fast if you leave your GPS app running as it is a constant send/recieve to the towers and back I would actually be more concerned with if your phone plan includes unlimited data as then if it did not include that you may find yourself charged for excessive data usuage if you played with it constantly day to day - but it would be unlikely it is transmitting that much data to push you over that limit Detroit Doug |

http://wmexperts.com/articles/gps_vs..._tutorial.html I'm not sure if Bell has their own navigation service like Sprint but as long as you don't use a carrier's service you should be fine as long as you understand a couple of things. If you have an unlimited data plan you could use Google Maps or MS' Live Search which stream the maps to your PPC via a data connection. If you don't have a data plan you can buy a GPS program such as iGo, TomTom, or Garmin XT which allows the phone to mimic a stand alone GPS by loading the maps onto the phone and does not require a data connection. Personally, I have iGo loaded on my phone in addition to Live Search and Google Maps. If you are highly dependent on your phone as GPS I would recommend buying a GPS program that allows you to load maps. There have been times where the free ones died on me because I was out in the sticks and could not get any reception. Being in an unfamiliar place without my trusty GPS would not be a good feeling. |

Funny cause I can get as many as 10 satellites locked and can see another 10 when I am out in the middle of the woods 30 minutes from the nearest small community. My signal is so low that I cannot get the maps for Google or Windows Live search. aGPS is assisted by towers when available but its main connection is to the satellites. The other piece of information it gets from the network is a time signal which helps in getting a satellite fix quicker. I am lucky to get 5 or 6 satellites in the city. |

Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
I have a Bell Mobiltity HTC Touch and I can not get my GPS working. I have posted in various places for help but no one has offered any suggestions or help. I have updated my rom to WM6.1 and download Google Maps and Live Search but i keep getting an error stating there is no GPS on the phone. Is it possible my phone doesn't have it or it is broken?
Thank you for any help. |

If not, I'd say update it with the newest bell rom first then see how it goes. I'm on Bell and mine works well. |
Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
my rom says 3.09.666.1 and radio 3.42.50. I am not to sure what you mean by customization with the newest bell rom update. I use Google Maps and Live Search if thats what you mean by program. I do have a GPS now on the device since i updated the rom but it tells me to pay for its use so i haven't tested it yet.
Thank you for the response. |

Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
Hmm i don't recal that happening. Can i reinstal the rom?
I learned what a soft reset was, is a Hard reset the turning the power off or removing the battery? I will try that amazegps link tonight when i get home. Thank you again for all the help. |

personally, I didn't like amazegps much. I use astrolauncher to launch igo8 which works perfectly. I believe garmin is able to detect gps w/o launcher now after the bell update, same with tomtom. Correct me if I'm wrong...I don't use those anymore, only igo. You don't need any primers for live search and google maps, at least in my experience. |
Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
I use both googlemaps and Garmin XT and both programs detect the gps and start using it with out any primers... just a fyi!

Just because you don't have a sense of humor, does not require others to conform to you. Try some X-Lax.. might help clear up whatever up and died in you. Some people take themselves way too seriously and are so anal retentive, will jump on *any* chance to flame on someone. I'm guessing you're 17... classic narcissistic phase. Think the world is all about you, and your perspective and views are all valid. Life will teach you otherwise my friend ;) We are all here at will and at your own risk. There are no rules in this forum against humor.. there ARE however against flaming. I can stop... but I get a kick at seeing how people like you get so bent so easily.. get your little feelers hurt. I can buy you a pacifier! PM me your address and I will send one to you! :D |
Re: Gps Detecion!!!!
So i got tried of fighting with my phone and called tech support at bell. I initally got told the Touch doesn't support GPS so called back in. A new rep said i can only get gps with the GPSnav on the phone which is there from the WM 6.1 upgrade. Otherwise, GoogleMaps, Live Search and Amaze doesn't work on the phone. The tech person said those programs will not work because the phone has the GPSnav program and they conflict.
The progam on the phone sucks but at a cost of $8 a month i get GPS on my phone..... guess what i will cancel next month. Time to save for a different GPS. |

Anyway, you should be able to get gps working, it does take a while when you first initialize it to get a lock on satellites. have you tried what I suggested? ie 1. flash with bell update rom 3.09.666.1 2. did you let customization run when it counts down, since that is needed for great gps signal? I'm not sure whether their pulling your tail about their gpsnav program conflicting with google maps/live search since I didn't use their update long enough to try or at least I don't remember. I flashed my phone to a custom rom made with the kitchen. I'd suggest you do that and then try google maps and live search again. If you're using a gps program such as garmin/tomtom/igo, you may need to prime it. Although I think for garmin/tomtom, they no longer need to be primed. You can get astrolaucher to prime it, it's in the ppckitchen. Anyway, hope that helps. PS the bell reps will tell you erroneous info, and tell you that for you to get gps working, you'll need to use their gps program...don't listen to them, they just want your hard earned cash |
