Hard and Soft Reset Question

Please don't laugh... but can someone please explain the difference between a hard and soft reset and what each one does. I see it mentioned often but have no real idea what it means but probably should know... if you know what I mean.

Thanks buds!

Re: Hard and Soft Reset Question

Soft Reset is basically like restarting your pc, nothing will be changed, to soft reset hold the power button for afew seconds, then choose yes when prompted.

Hard Reset will reinstall the operating software you are running on the phone, this will erase all your data (not SDcard), and bring the phone to a stock condition ( or stock condition of whatever ROM you have installed). To hard reset, hold the "call" button & "call end" button, then press the little reset button with you stylus.

next time just use the search function of the site

Re: Hard and Soft Reset Question

Bootloader mode is where you can upgrade the ROM [install a new version of Windows Mobile] from your PC.

As a "recent" n00b, I have to say this is a great little thread of information. I came to get a reminder that you don't lose the stuff on your SD card with a hard reset. For some reason I always forget whether or not it does. Thanks to the OP for asking the questions. A little refresher for some of us is always nice!

Jump! Just go with a custom ROM from a well established chef.

Re: Hard and Soft Reset Question

Just did a complete wipe of the phone (std oem vzw rom) by clear storage in settings system tab to start from scratch so i left the card in to see what would happen. nothing happened to the data on the card as best i can tell. i did have some programs loaded to the card and the programs are still on the card but dont show in the programs listing.

Re: Hard and Soft Reset Question

The programs must be reloaded. When you install something, the icons, shortcuts, and registry entries are stored on the device itself. Since those have been erased, the phone doesn't know that there are programs on the SD card

Does it say ACTION button or ENTER key? What type of device do you have? when you do a hard reset on a vogue, it asks you to press the ENTER key, which is the center key (middle pad). I've done it countless times and when it is done, you press the PHONE key to finish.

It's a good idea to remove the SD when flashing any ROM.
