Is there a player for .mp4?

I hate my Ipod :angry7:

It chops off tracks and messes up album order (prob Itunes actually).
The only reason I stuck with it was beacuse my Touch was so poor on battery life in comparison to the Ipod.

I just ordered an extened batter and the nice cover from the recent thread here, so that should be sorted! :headbang:

Now, in it's quest to simplify (read: mess up) my music collection, I tunes seems to have stored everything as .mp4 files.

Is there a player for WM6 that will play .mp4 or will I need to copy and convert them all back over?
Freeware would be ideal but if theres anything that's good, I'll buy a copy too.

I'd go with (and did) Pocket Tunes. It will play mp4's and sync from that dreaded i-tunes app on your desktop... :)

Thanks,
I'm a little cheap at heart so I'll try tcpmp first.
I like the sound of pocket tunes and it's auto sync with i-cr@p play lists

Ah damn,
I downloaded tcmp but it just comes up with an 'unexpected program failure. please send "crash.txt" to the developers' box. :(

Pocket Player recently updated...now version 3.7 -- it's NOT free, but worth a test run if you haven't tried it yet:

Thanks to tweety for a TCPMP d/l that finally worked on WM 6.1!

Alex, try Tweety's first link... it really is a zip file... unzip, copy the cab to your touch and go from there... it really did work for me.

Re: Is there a player for .mp4?

i would get an mp4 mp3 converter and convert everything to mp3. that way you are da boss not itunes.

also turn off autosyncing. who wants a software to tell you what to do. it is supposed to work the other way around- us humans are supposed to tell our software what to do. when the software and hardware starts to win that battle watch out for the knock on the door and some big dude asking you "are you John Connor".

i use my touch for mp3 maybe 40% of its use. my question to the world is how to amp the sound. is it hardware restrained on the touch or is it software? i want sound that is too loud at full throttle. using the oem software and a $3 pair of earphones dont do that. any reccs on earphones and software amps? should i go with a 2.5mm to 3.5mm jack and switch to 3.5 mm headphones? thanks

I myself would do this the other way around. I convert all my mp3s to 64kb .m4a (m4a, mp4, aac all the same thing).

the sound quality is still there...and you use about half the storage space. so if you can fit 1600 128kb mp3s on your 8gb storage card...you can fit about 3200 64kb m4as or mp4s on it. and trust me when I say the sound quality is still very very comparable.

try it and see. u'll enjoy having all the free space back.

Mine's too loud at the lowest setting! I use it multiple ways, including different sets of headphones, several different multi-media systems, and FM transmitting to living room stereo, patio, and garage. No problem with FM. Minor problem with multi-media. Big problem with ear canal type phones when ambient condition is silence. Most phones are similarly too loud, but some not so.

Best sound transfer seems to be with phones around 16 ohms or slightly less. Transfer is poor with 4 ohm phones, slightly better with 8, horrible with 32.

Another point is that I encode my MP3s with heavy dynamic compression and full 100% maximum amplitude, i.e. -0 dB. That way they all have the same level, as loud as the medium can carry (without too much distortion). When played on my old MP3 player, the volume can go as low as I want. But the same MP3s in Touch are too loud at minimum volume when in quiet surroundings.

I've tried different player software, system volume adjustments, tied player volume control to system, untied it, everything! The only way I've been able to lower volume is with an in-line volume control, between Touch and headphone jack. But I hate the fact that it wastes battery by reducing a percentage of the vibes via a pure resistor.

Sorry to ramble. Hopefully something here is useful to somebody? And maybe somebody has help re volume control?

Re: Is there a player for .mp4?

didnt know about the file size diff between 3 &4 thats good info. Guess i'll have to play with it now. I assumed itunes used mp4 (is that what they use?) as standard to keep the masses from moving files around easier. So knowing how generic mp3 format is i switch everything to mp3 format. now i gotta learn mp4 and find file converters for that i guess. Any suggestions on that front appreciated.

As for rambling on how get the volume amped. that was too little information. please ramble some more. having played with music files very little i want to find out how to amp the sound, play with the file format etc...

media player is probably the highest utilization my phone (er... touch) gets since i havent unlocked the gps and vzw gets too much of my $ for the services i pay for so im not paying them for data or gps. when wifi becomes available i may use the data more.

if there is another thread(s) on this topic (mp3, mp4, amping sound etc) digg me cause i have'nt searched for that yet but if not I would love to find out more on audio files and amping from you all. thanks all

Re: Is there a player for .mp4?

looked around a little... so mp4 is same as mpeg4 and this has been around for several years now? guess mp3 is out cause mp4 merges video and audio and is a better packaging of the data? my real question is that microsoft says they do not support mp4 playback on their media player so does that mean i will need a new media player on the touch as i migrate everything to mp4?

yea, mp4 can hold video as well. which is why i use .m4a which is only audio. it doesn't really matter though, they're like twins. jus one can hold video and one can't.

i uploaded blondie's 'call me' which in m4a format at 64kbs is about the file size of 1.74mb. jus want you to compare the quality to normal mp3s which more often then not are at 128kbs making them twice the size.

although itunes uses mp4...i still believe their at 128kbs making them the exact same size as regular mp3s. with that being the case, there is no point in using mp4. 'ONLY' reason i do....is to save storage space.
