Scrolling screen in programs like iContact

Is it just that my fingers are not smart enough for these scrolling screens, or is there a screen setting that I need to adjust, or is the software just stupid?

iContact looks nice, and the concept is good. But two things, at least are very wrong for me:

1) Almost every time I try to scroll up/down through the list of names, it will open one of the names instead of scrolling. I don't see any options, but it seems like it should require a longer press on one name before opening.

2) Many times I'll swipe my finger up/down and nothing happens. This is the same on the Today screen where the Cube doesn't always open, but it's definitely better on the Today screen than when I try to scroll iContact.

3) Does iContact offer any way to get to the middle/end of the alphabet besides scrolling all the way?
