please confirm this?!?! Update w/o unlocking?

I was searching thru some of threads, found this one in the 'got my touch in the mail, wat should i do first' thread. I am new to ppc's and am not comfortable unlocking, flashing etc, however, if the steps mentioned below are indeed true, I wont have to unlock and flash. Please someone confirm.

If you're not comfortable unlocking your phone, YOU HAVE SPRINT AS A CARRIER, and don't want to run one of the custom ROMS, all you really have to do to activate GPS

1. download the RAR file that stevedog1 linked above
2. hook up your phone to your computer with your USB cable and let it sync
3. copy off any photos or other data that you have on your phone that isn't backed up because the installer will wipe it out
4. leave the USB connected and execute the EXE file from the RAR on your computer and do what the program tells you to do until it tells you it's complete
5. When the upgrade is complete, execute \Windows\PPST.exe on your phone

Sorry about that.

this is the link for the post that was originally quoted. The actual post is #8.

Again, I just want to confirm that the steps quoted above do NOT require unlocking.

You will need to unlock with imcokemans 2.31 unlocker to flash this and get the radio 3.35.15. And then the custom rom after which you will enjoy a whole lot more than stock!

these steps ARE instructions on flashing the leaked sprint test rom....so if it sounded easy, then go for it, it's really not hard.....but yes, you will need to unlock 1st, again, not very hard if you can follow instructions.

I did this last night, followed these steps only and have never unlocked my phone. It is working perfect! No problems, no brick.

Re: please confirm this?!?! Update w/o unlocking?

a sprint phone won't need to be unlocked to run a signed sprint exe just like the alltel phones don't need to be unlocked to run the signed alltel upgrade. If you want custom ones though its really not that hard to do the unlocking.

nice thanks for the info guys, so it seems that this rom does not require unlocking since it is a spring rom.

i just installed this, and it couldn't have been easier. NO unlocking required at all. gps works good, but rev. a doesnt seem that much faster

ok, so i dont have to unlock, but it will change the radio? isnt that what sprint checks to see if you are a ppcgeek? no, i jest. seriously though isnt the radio what would tip the off that you have/had a non oem rom.

Those were my instructions from the other post. Yes, it updated the radio. Mine is at version 3.37.15.

or is it just if you have like an omj rom still installed when you take it in that they would freak out on you?

If you run the leaked ROM or any of the kitchens based on it, you will not be able to hide the fact that you're not running the stock ROM. Your HTC boot screen will change to read "test only" (unless it's been replaced in a cooked ROM), your windows version and splash screen will change, your radio will change, your ROM version will change, your PRI version will change, your SPL version will change, etc. I guess if you load the leaked ROM without unlocking, you could try telling them that you are a beta tester for HTC, but basically if you change your ROM, you run the risk of voiding your warranty.

Re: please confirm this?!?! Update w/o unlocking?

OK.......so I finaly broke down and did this, I followed the instructions and everything started out correctly and when the ROM update got to about 7% it stopped. It told me an error had occured, unplug the phone, pull the battery for 3 seconds, reinstall the battery , reconnect the phone and continue. I did this and now when I go to install the ROM it tells me that the ROM cannot be installed on my device and my phone is stuck on the bootloader screen. I've been holding off on doing this as I did not want to brick my phone and now I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: I think I can't install because my computer wont sync to the phone anymore. I'm using vista and mobile device center.
