Leaked ROM or something? quick question...

Ok I just got my vx6900 from VZW about a week ago and I have read a lot about leaked ROM's and such and such which im not familiar with at this early stage of having this phone. So with Verizon, is there some sort of ROM that people suggest I upgrade to or whatever?

I'm just really confused when I see everyone saying to upgrade to some ROM or whatnot...any information is helpful when it comes to my Verizon 6900 and suggestions of what it does/should i do it, etc etc.

Thanks much :)

hopefully you found plenty of reading the last few hours, as they have been a wakeup call (no pun intended) to the dangers of unofficial roms.

I can't speak for your device, just wanted to respond, and encourage you to read more.

It really depends on what you want to do with your xv6900. If you're new to windows mobile, you might want to spend some time getting familiar with the device so you can see what you like and don't like, what programs you use and what you don't use. Then figure out if you want or need to use the internal gps. The main difference between wm6.0 (what came with the xv6900) and wm6.1 (what is available in the custom roms and the ppcgeeks kitchen) is the threaded text messaging. Because the xv6900 has been known to develop hairline cracks (do a search on this site and howardforums.com), you might want to wait a few weeks before going with a custom rom. Mine took six weeks before it developed a crack. The problem with upgrading the radio (what you need to do to be able to use the internal gps) is that VZW did not release the rom/radio that shipped with the phone. So once you upgrade the radio -- i.e., flashing the leaked Sprint rom or the released alltel rom -- you can't flash back the radio. If after all that being said you want to upgrade, read the instructions from the various how-to threads very carefully and follow them exactly. Take a look at this thread - http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17473 - as well as the others that are stickied under the HTC Vogue Upgrades forum. In terms of what custom rom to use, that's a matter of preference too. The chefs will list out what's built into their rom, and you can also use the ppcgeeks kitchen (ppckitchen.org) to build your own - either 6.0 no gps or 6.1 gps. If you use the kitchen, still follow the instructions in the Vogue Upgrades forum for unlocking the phone. And if you're not sure and can't find the answer after searching, ask. And have fun!

Yup yup.

Does changing the ROM make the phone different somehow? I mean like...looks or something...today screen/menus whatever whatever? Or is it the same just with like GPS + extra features like that?

Thanks :)

Re: Leaked ROM or something? quick question...

i bought my 6900 saturday and already have it flashed with OMJ's Custom rom.

OMJ's rom is based off the leaked sprint rom only tailored to whatever carrier you have, (he has versions for sprint, verizon, bell) very close to just a stock Windows mobile 6.1. thats why i chose to use this one because i just want to enable GPS for now.

once you flash this rom it will have the green theme instead of the black/grey theme verizon has. thats the one thing i miss is the grey color.

so far my experiences have been up and down... i recently got to experience the GPS in my phone, only to have it not lock on today so far.. still trying to figure that out... and all my messeging doesnt' work, (text, pix, flix) i think this is a problem with the verizon servers

overall if you have patience, curiousity, and a little know how you can and might want to flash your phone. if your new and not sure, don't. just read about the headaches the the rest of us verizon users experience and learn from us.

if you do want to try it out heres the steps.

Flash with ImCokemans 2.31 unlocker

flash the Alltell Custom rom (this upgrades your radio version) **do a soft reset after this flashes** you will read about that in the thread that contains the FTP file

then flash OMJ's or another custom rom with GPS enabled...
