Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

Looks like a nice piece of software for a good price but it says you have to use the card they ship with it in order for it to work. I'm pretty sure they only ship a 1GB card and I have a bunch of music on my current 4GB card and if I can't play my music on my Bluetooth CD player while navigating it's a deal breaker.

So, if anyone out there uses it...have you been able to copy it to another card and get it working?

I use it and have it installed on a 4gb card. You do not need the entire set of maps only what maps you need to use, so it will fit on a smaller card if need be.

I have a couple of questions:
1 - How much space is the entire USA map set (48 states)?
2 - Did you have to hack or crack the software in order to install it on your own card? I have the same issue - like the software but want to install it on my own card.

TIA,

buy it on the cd and then you can transfer maps to your sd card. don't buy the preprogrammed card, as the maps can't be transferred to another card. or at least I couldn't figure out how to do it and it work.

i used the maps from the cd, it lets you choose sections of the maps and upload onto your own card. I beleive entire north america is a little over 1gb, but not sure as I only use a couple of states (about 100-200 MB).

All I've seen for purchase is the program on the card. I have yet to find one that's on the CD. Can you please let us know where you found it on the CD?

Is that just the maps or is it the mobile software too?

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

I have used all of them , TOMTOM, GarminXT and Igo8. I think Garmin has the most POIs of any of the packages. Also Garmin XT is the only one that actually shows my street correctly . I live on a circle and TOMTOM, IGO8 show it as desd end st... Only thing i dont like with Garminxt is its refresh rate its not smooth like the others. Your car looks like its jerking along the screen . Also I like adding my own POIs for trips . Garmin was real easiy to do this.. If i had to rate them i would put them in this order 1.Garmin, 2.IGO8, 3 TOMTOM...
But that just my 2 cents :)

And yes there is a way to put the GarminXT on a diff chip I had a tech support person help me move it to a 8 gig chip ( he said he wasnt supposed to but helped anyway) .

Garmin XT is the way to go, I moved mine to an 8GB Micro SD!!

So there IS a way, hint, hint :-)

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

There is certainly a way, but it involves unscrupulous means. The retail garmin mobile XT is locked to their SD card or their bluetooth GPS receiver (depending on which version you get). You will not be able to legally move it to another SD card if you buy this version. If you buy the other version, it won't let you use your phone's internal GPS. Boo garmin.

Also have the Garmin Mobile XT software and I'm tired to carring the GPS puck around with me. I'm getting close to purchasing a used Touch and using a cooked rom to unlock the GPS. How does the Touch GPS work with Mobile XT?

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

Mine works great . We joke about seeing if i can count to 20 b4 the GPS locks on after I open XT. I havent had any problem except i find if i let the touch go to sleep while im in XT it loses the sats but after i close it and reopen it works fine again.. Extremly accurate tho .. It clocks my speed to the exact MPH. and location works great... Also if you want some great POIs for it go to POIPLAZA.com ...

Re: Map Set size
The whole North America off the current Garmin DVD (City Navigator NA 2009) for sure takes over 1GB. I have not tried putting the whole thing on, I stopped at my card size, but even 48 lower US states take over 1GB. With Canada, Alaska and HI added it should be pushing 2GB...

I have the entire map set from the 2009 DVD and it only takes 1.01GB that includes Canada, HI, and AK. I highlighted from one corner of the map to the other while zoomed out at 1500mi.

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

its only the 2009 maps availble at walmart. also you dont have to load all of the states. just add the ones yu need. i added the three states around me for only 150mb. i can add others later if im planning on traveling out of the area

Garmin tech support told me about the dvd; I had previously purchased the preprogrammed sd card.

I bought it and I moved it. Nothing unscrupulous about it. Put it on my 8gig SDHC card. Updated the software right off the Garmin site onto the 8 gig card also.

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

Has anyone else noticed massive battery drain after using, and exiting, Garmin? I liked the software a lot, but it seemed to cause really bad battery leakage after using it. I'd have it plugged in when using it, then exit the software and unplug it from the charger when done navigating. Even though I exited the software, I'd still get really bad drain as if the GPS was still active or something. I've been comparing Garmin and MioMap 3.3. I don't have this problem when I use MioMap, only Garmin. I've uninstalled Garmin because of this, but liked the software more than MioMap. Has anyone had the problem, and know of a fix?

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

i copy all the files to the new card and it works fine

also copy everything under the garmin folder on device, as a back up.
in case of hard reset, reinstall from the new card
and replace the garmin folder on device with everything you copied as a back up, that works for me

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

I've got the Garmin programs/maps on an official 2 gig Garmin chip. It works fine as is with the GPS in the phone (Mogul).

I've tried copying the files from Garmin chip to a 4 gig chip; the maps don't copy and the program now says it will work only with the Garmin GPS. I can get the bluetooth GPS recognized, but without maps even that is useless. I tried selecting maps from my Garmin Mapsource disc via the Mapinstall program and everything seems to go well, but after a sync there are still no maps on my 4 gig chip.

One guy at Garmin said I was out of luck...but another guy at Gramin eMailed me a few days later saying all I had to do was copy the files from the Garmin chip to my own.

I'd like to run Mapsource maps on my phone using the built-in GPS like so many of you are doing (and y'all make it sound so simple/easy). Can any of you help?

Just run the Rom update and you can use GPS. I have upgraded my ROM, you can find it on this site, and it works great with telenav. I have not noticed a drop in battery life but I don't use the GPS too much since I have it in my car and a portable unit I take with me when I travel.

Does Garmin change anyone's system time? I stopped using it because it automatically changed my time.

Then you are using their external bluetooth gps... Their software is locked to one or the other - an authenticated sd card (contains a code tied to a unique card id) or their bluetooth gps....

I am a Noob :newb: to this forum, so I may not articulate as well as others (technology-wise), but here goes...

When you copy the files over to another card, you also need to copy the file with the unlock code into the SAME file folder as well. You will need to enter your original unlock code that came with your software again, but it should then work for you. I hope this helps.

I am using the Garmin software and the time does get changed and then switched to night mode. I believe if you leave it go for a couple minutes it will change back.

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

My experience is that the time will change if you use the intermediate gps driver. I've heard that if you use com4, the time should be ok. However, you need to open the gps port before launching Garmin, which is also troublesome for me.

smeg36 06-18-2008 05:44 PM

Re: Anyone using Garmin Mobile XT GPS Software?

I uninstalled v4.20.50w, and installed v4.20.20w. My battery life isn't draining anymore, and after setting it to com4 instead of the intermediate driver the time isn't changing while it gets a fix. And the program does open the GPS without needing to prime it first, even with it set to com4.
