Customization Ideas (Help a NOOB)

I've been lurking for a few days and I think I have the basics down as to what I can do to customize my Sprint Touch. The problem is... there are too many choices!

I would like some suggestions for what to do and where to start. I want a simple and clean layout. On my "home" screen I want:
  • to see all my message alerts... nothing tiny... I want to see them clearly
  • current weather and a few days out, with a quick way to get to upcoming weekend weather
  • my appointments for today and few days out, with a quick way to see the whole week
  • maybe a sports score plugin... I think I have that covered
  • easily accessible contacts
I think I'm going to try a "cube" with some simple customizations. Any ideas to get me started with my "home" would be appreciated.

Thanks
jweaks

Thanks Shaun.

I'm definitely looking at that SPB Phone Suite... I'll look at your other ideas too.

I forgot about GPS... that should be on my needs list too... I haven't figured that out as yet.

Google maps and Live Search are good free programs, but you need a internet connection all the time.

TomTom , iGo & Mapnopolis all can be used anytime. The maps are stored on your memory card.

Can you get any of those to talk to you? ...give you directions while you're driving? I have a friend with a Verizon phone that does that very well.

Thanks,

Yes, those are on my list to try. I'd rather not buy MS and PP unless I really need them. I think I'm going to bite on their phone suite however... that's a lot of money if I get all three of those products, but I do like the looks of the SPB stuff.

Thanks!

Re: Customization Ideas (Help a NOOB)

I have mine setup so htc home and my calander are on my home screen. But above them I have 4 mobile shell tabs. One is weather, one is contacts, one is programs, and one pockets plus. When you click on a mobile shell tab its contents appear and the htc home plug is covered by the tabs contents. Click the tab again and its contents hide and htc home and calander reappear. If you click on the pocket plus tab in shell you can add upgo 10 more tabs for whatever plugins you want. I know it sounds confussing but its not and it looks clean but I have access to all of my phone within 2 or 3 clicks max.

Re: Customization Ideas (Help a NOOB)

I thought I would update this for any noobs like me wondering how to customize.

I finished my mods last night and I'm very happy with my touch!

Here is what I did:

Cokeman unlock
"leaked" rom install
then I got the kitchen and did my own rom install
(all the above is fairly simple and easy but you must read the threads regarding these upgrades and follow the instructions.)

up and running on new rom...
I installed SPB Mobile Shell. I like it but I'm not sure it's worth the cost. It is however working very well for me. I installed one of the "PointUI" themes for the shell and found the layout change to give me a 9-button launcher. I spent a little time figuring out how to tweak the registry and modify two of the menus.

I needed to get to my Gmail so I just did the imap setup which was easy, except that WM6.1 trys to get the settings automatically and does POP instead of IMAP. You have to feed it bad info to get it to stop and allow you set it to imap.

I needed to get google calendar and contacts on there. I tried a lot of options but nothing worked better than OggSync. It's pricey but it works! It does not get my contact pictures however from google and put them in my Touch. (Seems like it would do that... would be a big time saver!)

I'm still looking for a better weather app... trying pocket weather at the moment. The app in the mobile shell gives me a look at my hometown weather. I tried SPB weather, but just didn't get the setup... seemed to complicated.

I ended up putting pocket weather on the Today screen along with a battery status program and did away with a lot of the other stuff on the Today... that way everything I normally use is in the Mobile Shell... when I want to see more extended weather reports or look at battery usage or a couple other things, I just "swipe down" in the shell to get to the today screen. Ideally it would be great if the Today screen were gone altogether and replaced by another page of "plugable" items in the Shell. I have no idea how that would be done.

Now I've got pretty much everything I need, readily accessible and it looks good.

Now to play around with the GPS... :)

well just a reccomendation but for GPS if you want to make money while using it go to www.navizon.com they just got a new version out with bug fixes for cdma phones now. basically you can use this app in place of google maps or livesearch and as you find new areas you get actual money. read about it if you doubt it.

heres my referral code, if you sign up for navizon (which is free) put in my referral code!

I think SBSH PocketBreeze will do most of that for you. Add their weather plugin and you've got an amazing today screen.
