Bell Touch & Tethering
I've done searches on Bell or Telus solutions, but I can only find discussion on US carriers, which seem to operate a bit differently.
I have a Bell Touch and an unlimited on-phone data plan, and am trying to see if there's a way to tether it to my laptop, without it being detected as tethering. The Bell WM6 ROM does NOT come with ICS installed... and the only tethering app is "WModem" which, if you try to "start" it, tells you to disconnect the phone's data connection first. Any solutions? |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
check out pdanet, its a useful program even if you have a tethering option (but works well if you don't)

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Well I've been able to tether on telus with bluetooth. Just link your device with bluetooth, install the dial-up networking service. Run it and use "#777" as the number to dial, no login/password. It should connect and you'll be good to go!

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
AFAIK they could only really *accuse* you of tethering based on the size of downloads and type of traffic...
Good luck telling anyone at Bell that that 4GB torrent you downloaded was for use on your phone! On the other hand they could get particularly sneaky... It wouldn't be hard to sniff the TCP/IP traffic coming from your phone and recognize that your useragent ( Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080416 Fedora/2.0.0.14-1.fc8 Firefox/2.0.0.14) doesn't exactly belong to Windows Mobile... Here is the text of an email I received about a month after signing up for Unlimited Browser : If you have subscribed to the Unlimited Mobile Browser feature, you can access the Internet on your mobile phone. Please note that it does not include use of your device as a modem to connect to the Internet from your computer. If you plan on using your device as a wireless modem, we suggest that you subscribe to one of our data plans to avoid additional data connectivity charges. Now that doesn't really mean anything more than *IF* we catch you we *WILL* bill you.... Still not something I am going to bother with... |

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Just a FYI, your contract with Bell is very specific about tethering, my friend has a Bell Touch and read through his contract and it says no tethering. Telus on the other hand uses it as a selling feature.

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
I got dinged and didn't even know it was a difference... any nobody at their stupid call centres can help me even though they know its wrong... I used the tethering for 3 days and accumulated enough data transfers to have a 800 dollar phone bill.... FOR 3 DAYS.

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Well the thing is... I wasn't warned... and my plan is unlimited internet so I thought.... but for some reason using it on the computer is worse even though i can access everything from my phone as I can the computer.... so they argued with me for 2 hours and did nothing in the end.... does anyone know a number to call which is actually a Bell Rep and not some gay call center?

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
HAHA Try This on for Size:
I had purchased my HTC Touch back in March... I Tethered for 2weeks, Downloading at miraculous speeds of 100kbps+ for EV-DO. I Received a phone call at the end of the 2 Weeks that was an automated message that stated "Hello, This is an Important Announcement from Bell Mobility..... You are near your credit limit. Please contact Bell Mobility Regarding your current usae and balance." I Though it was my First/Second Month Payment, and Fun Bundle package and a few other add ons.... hahaah...... ADDONS? $18,328.67 DATA CHARGES. What I did was the following: 1. Went directly to the store I had purchased the phone from, and Got a photocopy of my contract. 2. By looking at the reps additional contract Terms handwritten states: UNLIMITED DATA USAGE: $20/mth" 3. Looked at the sales person, said I want these fees to be credited as per the Contract signed at initial Term states "DATA" not "MOBILE BROWSER". 4. THey called Headoffice and spoke in the back office for about 15minutes. Now, I get every Tether fee waived per month.... They got themselves in quite the situation with me. I love Bell Now ahahahahah |

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Getting charged for my data has always been my greatest fear.
I use my touch as my primary source for internet right now, as I'm in a different province weekdays for work. I heard good things about pdanet, tried it out and was so impressed I paid $30 for the license. My first bill just came back... over 6gigs of data costing me, $0!! Very easy to use, and now with the GPS working, the touch with a data plan is the best deal going. |

as for tethering... any way you tether will get you billed unless you use PDA Net. however its done in PDANet it is not detectable from bell. i have it on good authority that they are trying to figure it out. but... as for now... its still your only option, but it works. |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Just wait until they do figure out PDAnet and all you guys have 18k phone bills too.
|
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
I downloaded seriously about a 6-7 gig torrent files with my phone and PDAnet active and when i received my bill at the end of the month, i was only charged for like 7 or 8 at max Meg of download... Which was probly my phone usage.
Anyways... |

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Just an FYI.
Early this morning...around 2am I used my Bell Touch to tether using PDANet to play some online poker at work. Long story short? Checked my billing today and all of the data is listed as mobile browser at no charge. Yay! Watching the "meter" on my laptop I had a combined data up/download of about 28 MB over the time I played. The laptop was also downloading updates for antivirus and windows at the same time. So, it's all good for now. And I won $26 playing poker. Win, win as they say. :headbang::headbang: MT |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
so tethering on bell for free is only achievable through this pdanet?? we cant use the ics hack?

ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Vogue/Users/OMJ/ROMS/OMJ.3.09.01.Clean.exe These two roms have tethering installed in them....both based off of bells new 3.09 rom. But I warn you please tether at your own risk. I've been tethering for about 3 months and have not been billed for it using NFSFAN's rom, but that's me.....for you it might be different or may not. I don't download anything though, just surf |

tethering, but what I've found strange is that it does NOT produce ANY entries (not even "Mobile Browser") in the usage detail in my bill.. I found this suspicious... if tethering goes unnoticeable, it should give the entries of the "Mobile Browser" type.. should not it? I've not received any extra charges so far, though... Nevertheless, I'm curious to try that "internet sharing" with new Bell ROM.. (which does not have "internet sharing " installed, instead it contains something called "wireless modem"... I wonder whether one can install that "Internet sharing" via cab? P.S. It seems to me that (at least currently) NFSFAN's ROM is NOT based on new Bell's rom 3.09, but on something older? |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
P.S. how PDAnet is different from "wireless modem" already present in the ROMs..
in case anyone knows? |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
NFSFAN's Bell rom tethers just fine via ICS ... It always shows up on my bill as mobile browser, and I have never been charged. always $0.00.
If you dont believe me, ask him for yourself. I see no need for pdanet, when with proper reg hacks you can achieve the same result with internet connection sharing. |

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Bell might be cracking down on PDAnet. I've been charged for data while using PDAnet. Don't know if it's a bug in the program, or Bell has figured it out.

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
anyone hear of usb modem by mobile-stream?
its like pdanet and im wondering if id get charged using it?(im also running nfsfans donno if that would help the not being detedcted as the aditional program would be dealing with the data) i ask because not just pcs but my mac could do usb tether with it not just bluetooth |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
I bought PDAnet 2.0 and installed it on my laptop, then I installed the CAB on my Bell Mobility Touch. I did not special configurations just the basic install. I turned off the WIFI connection on my laptop. Clicked on the PDAnet icon on my taskbar and selected Connect. It worked perfectly. I am VERY neurotic and even though it works I`m wondering if I was suppossed to do any special configurations to hide Bell Mobility tethering. When I look at the options on my Touch, Proxy Mode is checked and Default Ntework is selected, are those the right ones? Upon connection the laptop says initializing connections, username/password verified, and finally connected.
What do you guys think? Is it all setup properly? Thanks for the help |

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
I have a question for those who are getting charged for tethering with Bell. Are you just casually surfing or actively downloading stuff from the web. Also does this show up as "Mobile Browser" in your unpaid usage section of your bell account? or some other designation.
I am trialing PDA net and used it for one day casual surfing from work. I checked the unpaid usage and it was all "Mobile Browser" so far. My bill comes up at the start of next month so I will wait and see if they ding me... I sure hope I didn't miss the free tethering. Otherwise the costs for a data plan are nuts! |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
i've been tethering for months now using nfsfans rom and ics with no problems (i.e. being detected/charged)... it works amazing!
|
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
I honestly am not trying to start any kind of a war here... however... everyone knows tethering requires extra charges for service... right?
My question really goes out to the mods of the forum... you post in your rules... "Re: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING PPCGeeks.com Rules 09/02/08 - ZERO-TOLERANCE REMINDERS This is a reminder that this website has a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy on posting warez, asking for warez, or anything related to warez. Since ESN cloning is also illegal, we also have a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy on posting cloning instructions, asking about cloning, or anything related to cloning. You WILL be banned if you post anything about warez (keygens, serials, cracks, anything about getting paid software for free) or ESN cloning." Am I right to say that a paid software is either more valuable than a paid service, or more important. Either way someone is getting screwed out of what they were looking to provide, the software creator, or the service provider. I believe strongly that the talk on tethering without paying the additional fees completely violates the ideas of why we should be here. I strongly encourage members and moderators to please consider this... the more people tether without actually paying for it, the more a data plan will cost for the people who don't tether. Get an AIRCARD if you need it, or sign up with your carrier for tethering...bottom line. Just the same as if I warez someones software...the more it's warez the less updates you will get or the higher the price will go...it's the same principle. |
Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
Anyone figure out if tethering to NFS's new wm6.5 ROM with bell unlimited browser to a pc works without them charging you per kb? i use wmtorrent, facebook and utube apps (up to 2gb/mth data) every day on my vogue and i never see any extra charges on my pay as you go (fun 20) in selfserve. i'm in a rural area so my evdo is the only internet available aside from satellite for high speed. huge difference in price for getting video streaming and daily OS/Antivirus updates.

Re: Bell Touch & Tethering
I suggest you read through codybear's faq about nfsfan's rom. There should be info in there about ICS. Here's the link :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=508544
