Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
What applications should I be using on the PC and phone to accomplish this via USB with the best performance and reliability?

Re: Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
I just use the internet sharing on the touch. It will pop up a new local network and then just use you fav explorer. Nothing else is needed.

pdanet works really well too, worth a look

Re: Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
Reasons to use over the included app?

Re: Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
The major reason I suggest pdanet is because there are reports that it masks tethering (carrier thinks its just the phone browsing) For people with plans that don't allow tethering, this would obviously be pretty awesome. I tried it, super easy to set up, and works well, but I'm still a little hesitant that I will get charged for tethering. Nothing extra showed up on my bill but I haven't used it since because i haven't needed to tether. Google pdanet and you will find tons of stories about it though. Good luck!

I'm on a tethering plan, no worries for me. :)
Thank you both. |
Re: Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
hey guys, im with bell, and ive got the 7 bucks unlimited data, does pdanet mask that usage too? because my net at home is really crappy now, like takes 3 minutes to load up some simple webpages. not to worry tho, that just because my router is like 2 million miles away. but i mean, i dont want to be charged for tethering, but ive got the unlimited data plan that i use quite a lot even on my phone now, any advice for this poor fellow?

Re: Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
yah thats what I'm on (actually aliant) and I tried pdanet, worked (with BT too!), and no extra data charges. All I did was test it out by going to my email and a couple other pages but it seemed pretty fast. It works but I wouldn't go overboard with it, you use way more bandwidth on a computer than on your phone and they would probably realize something is up. That means torrents are probably not safe to do either. But I would check around on google, there are lots of posts on this particular issue. You might need to do some registry hacks too so they don't see it tethered (just google tethering, registry hack, htc touch, etc.). If you can't find them I can find them and post too, good luck

Re: Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
i tried searchin up google, but with keywords bell tethering no valuable information comes up, i mean im sort of lookin for hard proof that u can tether, plus I mean ive downloaded quite a few torrents with my phone and bell hasnt said anything, not yet at least :) but it would be nice if you could post some info that could help, meanwhile ill search it upp too...thanks in advance man

Re: Tethering Alltel Touch to Notebook...
So you have been dl torrents thru the phone using a phone torrent app? Won't bell know that there are a million IP's that you are connecting to when downloading? Thats pretty cool that it works tho, whats the app you use?
As far as info on pdanet, there is a thread in here that somebody says pdanet hides tethering. sorry bout the noobness but I don't know how to link that thread here, its called Tether with Sprint Touch (just want simple answer plz)-. One of the posts said "the point of using Pdanet is so you CAN tether to your bell phone, without an extra data plan or charges..." Another place I found some info was on a motorola q forum http://www.hellomotoq.com/forums/ver...ying-15-a.html look at the 5th post down and the discussion continues after that. Another place on howardforums- http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...readid=1287318 They also talk about the registry change to disable MultiNai On the same note when I set up tethering I also changed some registry settings that I found somewhere that also mask the tethering (apparently) including that multinai thing. those reg changes were 1. hklm/software/oem/wmodem/set all those values to 0 I don't think this one is doing too much tho because I'm not using the Wmodem app, regardless, might be a good idea. 2.hklm/Comm/Internetsharing/change the extension rilphone.dll to be rilphone1.dlll (note the 3 l's) Apparently this is the extension that tracks tethering so if you rename it, it doesn't work anymore. So in summary thats what I did and I didn't get any extra data charges. As you can tell, I got all that info from some pretty broad sources, by no means is it hard proof. Pretty sure it works but the only real way to find out is to use it and see if there are any extra charges. Since I don't really need to use it, I haven't bitten the bullet and tried it for anything more than checking email and light browsing. I think the main thing is the amount of data (even tho its unlimited) that you could possibly chew through when tethered might be an indicator to bell. If you find anything more definitive in your searches let me know. It would be awesome to know for sure for sure. Good luck! pretty messy post I know.... |
