S2U2 vs Point UI ?

Anyone use Point UI?

www.pointui.com

Darkness231 02-04-2008 03:10 PM

I have it on my Titan, and use it in conjunction with s2U2. Works great, wish it had a little more options for customization. I think that this application (Pointui) would be more suited to the touch than the titan (yes I know that this is in the touch forum), mainly because the hard buttons add a lot of the shortcuts. Also think that Pointui would be good for a first time PDA /PPC user.

I have been using Pointui for a few weeks now on my Apache(WM6). The latest version 1.02b was released today. I think it's great not perfect, yet, still not customizable enough but getting there. I've also used s2u2 for months. It can be used with Pointui but I've been using Pointui's lock program for a few days and will decide soon which I'll use permanently.

Success100 02-04-2008 03:28 PM

i stopped using it, it got really boring and one sided to me. Def was easy to use, but sometimes it ran great, other times ran like straight crap

Darkness231 02-04-2008 03:31 PM

Nice just downloaded the update, fixes some issues with the bar interfering with task managers such as wisbar. And is very annoying that I have to copy the registry keys for customization from one version to the next.

EDIT: Tried to set Pointui to turn on when the device wakes up but it wont.

eballin 02-04-2008 03:39 PM

i like pointui alot becuz of the way it shows upcoming events. it runs perfect for me but if u have flo touch on your ppc you might end up opening some unwanted programs... thats my only problem

bugzy 02-04-2008 03:54 PM

i wish the PointUI had the S2U2 lock feature

i like S2U2 alot, but rather just use a built in lock system if it was closer to what S2U2 does regarding random screen wake ups

You can make S2U2 be the locking application, just add this key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Pointui\Pointui.Home\1.02b

Create a new String value key of
Name
App.Path.Lockscreen
String
\program files\S2Us\S2U2.exe

The 1.02b part will vary depending on the version installed

bugzy 02-04-2008 06:55 PM

looks like the new version of PointUI that was released today added features of S2U2

Today's version is also available in a black theme. I am using it now after trying it out a month ago and deleting it. Today's release is much better!

k000 02-04-2008 11:07 PM

Do you mean the PointUI can 'lock' the screen now ?

Shrink 02-04-2008 11:18 PM

Only manually. By saying that the new version was better I meant that it was less buggy and a little more customizable than the previous version.

the answer is yes, however, its not as tweaked as S2U2

i believe it wakes on power button, which means, its using the default Windows setting to power off the screen, which for me is 1 minute, unless i hit the power button manually

hopefully they add some more settings on the lock screen function similar to S2U2

I have noticed 2 undesirable bugs in the newer version, 1.02b. When you click on the "New" menu, you get stuck there because the back button will not work. And secondly, when you click on the applications button, it doesn't do anything at all. It just leaves you there.

What I am wondering is, is there a registry fix that will make the Applications button point to the programs menu?

And lastly, is there a way to fix the issue of getting stuck in the "New" menu?

i believe that is by design because the back will open a 2nd instance of the PointUI, but im not sure about it

my Application works fine

Just been playing with it for 30 mins. I'm totally impressed. They certainly could upgrade some things (Lock on power off, graphics, quick program menu not unlike HTC home, Weather tab only shows today and tomorrow, music controller, to name a few) but I think this will be my app of choice for a while...

DHarvey 02-05-2008 01:53 PM

Still not sure why my applications link doesn't work... Need a fix pretty bad. Also I have another question. Does anyone know how to change from outlook to another email client? I use gmail.

Thanks

Try going to Program Files / PointUI / Home and deleting the cache folder. It will rebuild the next time you open and should fix the problem. Here is the answer to your question about changing email.

New Features
  • - Weather update frequency now includes "Manual".
    - Customisation (yes, we are Aussies so spell it with an 's'): Media Player - ok, a little techy at this stage, but you can now specify the path of your media player in the registry:
    • - In the key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Pointui\Home\{your version} (i.e. version = 1.01b) create a new String value called App.Path.Media
      - You can include in your path {Windows}, {Programs}, {ProgramFiles} which will get replaced with your device specific folders but if you do use them then don't start the path with a backslash
      - The path can be to a shortcut or exe, and include spaces, but don't use any quotes
      - An example value is: {Windows}\wmplayer.exe
      - You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in
    - Customisation: Email account
    • - You can specify a store name in a String value called App.Email.StoreName
      - This will then launch to the specified inbox instead of Outlook mail
      - The store name is CASE SENSITIVE
      - It doesn't appear to break if you enter a dodgy store name - just doesn't do anything http://forums.pointui.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
      - Unread message count indicator will be count of TOTAL emails across all accounts
      - You NEED TO RESTART Home for this one to kick in
    - Customisation: Tasks and Calendar
    • - You can specify an alternative app for Tasks and Calendar using the registry keys App.Path.Tasks and App.Path.Calendar
      - If the alternative app requires command line args then you can supply them with the corresponding keys App.Path.Tasks.Args and App.Path.Calendar.Args
      - You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in
    - Customisation: Phone
    • - To use an alternative dialer (or if your device has the problem of when you click the Phone icon it freezes for 8 seconds, then you can specify an alternative dialer (or any app really) using the registry key App.Path.Phone
      - You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in
    - Customisation: Lock Screen
    • - To use an alternative lock screen application you can set the registry key App.Path.LockScreen. This should provide a workaround for Smartphone users who cannot get out of our lock screen.
      - You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in

Also here are my 2 cents on S2U2 and PointUI.

I personally use PointUI exclusively. Since they implemented the option to lock automatically I have not used S2U2. The main reason being that the PointUI locker functions fine by me. Also I dont have to have S2U2 running in the background sucking up precios memory.

However I am considering installing S2U2 again just for the caller id =)

I like Point UI but it freezes up my phone after screwing with it for a while, and I have to do a soft reset.

InvincibleLiving 02-05-2008 03:47 PM

i just loaded this for the first time 20 min ago so i havent made any full blown conclusions about the app.. i like it so far but its still missing some finishing touches that would make it my de facto interface... nice step in the right direction though. lets see how far they go with it.

i will say this, i love the speed of it. it always confuses me how 3rd party apps seem to open the native os apps better than the native os does!! lol

That's probably because you have too many applications running and you ran out of available memory. I like to stay on top of that anyway so that's not a problem for me. The task manager is a beautiful thing.

EDIT::

This fix didn't do it. Is there any other way to map th applications shortcut the programs menu? I really like this app and would most likely use it daily and all day but without the ability to access my programs menu from the app I really can't use this because I need my programs menu.

Thanks.

this is a Touch not a Mogul. I don't run any apps in the background and it freezes when just playing with the whole interface.

Now that I think about it, mine does that too from time to time but all it takes is a 30seccond soft-reset and that's only healthy for your device anyway.

mr.BeBoT 02-05-2008 05:27 PM

I like where PointUI is going but it defineatly shows that it's still beta. For now I use s2u2 to cover the things I need.

yup, WM6 does that in general for me, with other apps running

guess just the way of windows

AndyStorm 02-05-2008 07:12 PM

I am using it on my Touch - works great, looks great, But - the e-mail button on the home screen only points to the Outlook mailbox - the counter only counts outlook e-mails. Does not really help when you have other e-mail accounts on the device.

There's a fix for that in post #18.

I am in total LOVE with Point UI - very neat and elegant implementation.

How do I lock the screen with the Home visible, rather than getting the arrow type lock screen

Sorry - figured it out.

I had to set 'Lock on power on' in the Home Customization menu. Works great. I am removing s2u2.

out of curiosity what's the shortcut to a mailbox? i know the general one is tmail.exe but that shows you all your boxes.

i have a gmail that i want it to direct to.

I LOVE PointUI! I have been a user of Windows Mobile for many years now, and I must say that this interface is VERY user friendly. This works very well for new users of Windows Mobile devices also. I have family members with WM6 devices, and they hate having to pull out the stylus. I will be sure to email them the link to this app.

A few "wants" for PointUI.
#1) Speed Dial screen on one of the main "side-scrolling" screens.
#2) Contacts menu like the Call History button on the Home screen.
#3) Hide the default WM home screen completely. PointUI should stay on top always.
(I found this workaround to hide the Today screen at the PointUI forum. http://forums.pointui.com/viewtopic....14&t=810#p6741)
#4) An option to reverse the scrolling within it's menu system.

Beautiful app.
Saying "goodbye" to the Cube.
PointUI is much more comprehensive.

How do I set it to start on Startup ? is there a setting somewhere that I am mssing ?

Also I see it crashes if I bring up the contact screen by sliding up (Cube?) and then bring the Contacts screen down.

And I second the synptyc list.

And I thing this is quite well polished and classier than S2U2. Just my humble opinion.

Use resco explorer to create a shortcut to the start menu and then use the same resco explorer to move that shortcut to startup. Soft reset. Done.
