Help making icons for cube
 

I am trying to make some icons for my cube, but when I convert the .png to .bmp I am getting a "shadowy background" behind the icon. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong. Maybe its my convertor, so suggestions for a good one would also be appreciated.
