Who would want Carrier Specific Kitchens?

I'm thinking about releasing a kitchen for each carrier with the popular customizations and want to see if there is interest. Here is my idea:

I'm thinking of the following components:
1. Kitchen...done.
2. Carrier Rom as base...done.
3. Carrier specific OEM's to fix/override issues in the stock rom and support add-ins.
4. Other OEM files to add in...done.

That way all I have to worry about is a couple carrier OEM's...Time for a new poll to see if there is interest...

How about metropcs?

Do you have a link to an original rom so I can look into it? Of course, everything I need is at home on the hard drive, I was just thinking outloud and checking to see what interest there was before I invested the time in this venture...

Re: Who would want Carrier Specific Kitchens?

Well I understand the need for other kitchens besides ppckitchen. Ive had the ppckitchen on my pc for probably 1-2 months, and only in the past 3 weeks have started building my ROM, and only because of rstoyguy and his tutorials. PPCKitchen, IMO, is too convoluted for me and if you read some of my posts about OEMs I am a stickler for correct settings, and I also like a hands on approach.

Now, I personally think that the kitchen in rstoyguy's tutorial is great and dont really know what would change with specific carrier kitchens, but I trust that there is a need or rstoyguy would not put the time into it. If he thinks there is a need, then obviously there is and I wait to see what this new kitchen brings to the table. I say go for it as there is always a need for more options

If you are talking about having a kitchen for each carrier and then having the different versions of roms/oems separated, that sounds great.

I am running the stock bell release of August, I think it is 3.08, 3.42.50 or something like that. It would be nice to build a rom with known working changes made, like ati drivers, Registry changes, Battery management and programs that might need a tweak to get to run right for different roms. I think the best part of something like this would be the non listing of programs or versions of programs that do not work with your rom/radio/carrier combination.

Re: Who would want Carrier Specific Kitchens?

RStoyGuys goal only applies to people who want to use the old style kitchen. There is ZERO value in making seperate kitchens otherwise. There is extremely limited value in doing it even with the old style kitchen (like almost none).

If you find PPCKitchen convoluted, you're not going to find any other kitchen any better (the available interfaces are almost identical). I suggest you pare down the number of oems you have to pick between. You don't have to include PPCGeeks_OEM.

It would be great to have something that doens't list invalid rom/radio/carrier oems, but sadly that is not available and not being offered by RSToyGuy. I don't believe he is even planning on offereing much in the way of oems, so you'll be mostly on your own there.

The only value I see being offerred is really "the popular customizations". That can be done in a .cab or OEM without the need for an entire kitchen.

If you seriously want to do it though, have fun. It's a heck of a learning experience.

Re: Who would want Carrier Specific Kitchens?

sorry, i don't usually comment on these things, but are you SERIOUS?

everything can be done as an OEM... heck, in GSM-land, ROMS work on hundreds of carriers without any extra work because they have this thing called advanced configuration.

nevertheless, I guess one cannot see how overcomplicated they are making things until they understand what they are getting themselves into.

therefore, i side with gguru, and agree with him that it will be a fun learning experience for you.

no2chem and gguru packing the HEAT lol just kidding and IMO who cares just use a kitchen or better yet install the little cab that makes it work.

Re: Who would want Carrier Specific Kitchens?

It's going to be a challenge. But no2chem and gguru are right. If your not comfortable with dogguy's kitchen, stick with the ppckitchen. Much easier to use and there are some checks and balances built in. If you struggle there, this project won't be for you...
My idea is to create basically the OEMAPPS folder for each carrier. I'll have users download and disassemble the stock rom, delete the OEM directory and insert two sets of OEMs. A carrier set which has the dup files removed so they can add the second set of OEM's containing an updated keyboard/cube/comm manager etc... Then folks can add their own stuff from where ever they can find the OEM's. And all I will update/upload are updates to the carrier OEM's. And provide general support. I just want to help get folks going cause most get stuck with duplicates out of buildos as they go droppin in a Diamond_keyboard or something. This endeavor is to make available a kitchen for those that prefer slightly modified stock roms, and to give me a better understanding in the differences in the carriers, and the different methods. All those provxml's to sift through! :) I could just download dcd's carrier cabs, but I think this way I'll learn more!

And who knows...I may only start a couple and throw in the towel, but it will be a good noodle stimulator for me brain! This thread is just to see if there was any interest, and for feedback. I'm still just planning...and thanks for all the feedback folks!

I can see I'm in for a heck of a mess! :)

I wouldn't mind if it used the original rom as a base...hell the only thing actually want to see is the ability to cook the bell music store into a custom rom :-p

make or ask someone to make (rstoyguy?) the oem. Then you can use it in any kitchen. You can always add it from the .cab in your extended rom after you've flashed.

I am using the latest Bell rom as I am with Bell, I really like this rom as I have checked memory/cpu numbers on boot and Bells are great, 28%cpu and around 75 megs ram used.

I have used NUEtools to load OEM's untill the phone starts working wonky and the same goes for programs, hard reset and try again, hehehe. Well I finally found good combinations that work for me, 31/32% CPU and 72 megs free ram on boot

This is what I Would like to be able to do, take what I have now and with enough input from trial and errors end up with the above but with better performance and a few Bell apps out and a few new apps added.

A clean kitchen based off stock roms is generally worthwhile (non-carrier specific). I don't know what build it is to know if it has already been done (doubtful). If someone wants to make it before we get around to it, we'll be happy to add it to the list of stock kitchens. It's pretty easy to do.

Just remember the golden rule: you make it, you support it.

I did cook one time my custom rom, then realize i wanted some more stuff and decided to use Dharvey's rom instead of modifying my rom once more... Having a bell themed rom with all their app would be something that would make me cook my own rom once more.

That's the idea, use your carrier base. Then users can add/delete what they want and depending on what you do, the music store will work just fine...

I can't quote cpu usage etc... I will be relying on feedback from users that have that carrier, but it won't be too far off stock and you can add/delete what you want. Basically what I plan on is updating things like the keyboard, today theme, and insert a good base of regedits. Thats to start with...I just want a good base for everyone. From there I can share my tips and tricks and help guide you to create a Rom Built for Y.O.U. by you.
I have other motives for these series of proposed roms, but that's my diabolical plot. It's not really about me, it's all about helping my fellow ppcgeeker's. :) I have learned many things the last eight months on this board...And as a side effect, this project will definately help me learn even more! :)

Now where's that first rom so I can see what I'm getting myself into?! :) That's two bell users, how about I start with that bell rom...

Re: Who would want Carrier Specific Kitchens?

I'll have a bell test rom up in the morning...PM me if you want the link so you can test it. It will be mostly for a functionality check.

Re: Who would want Carrier Specific Kitchens?

The bell ROM and OEM directory are done. Check it out here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=36584
Note: This thread is a test bed, I'll have a properly formatted thread soon that will be designed to support all the carriers I process...

Sprint will be next by tonight. All roms will have the same basic files, I'm gonna pull some of my megapack stuff like games. You can re-add it by going to my Custom OEM Request thread and drop it into the kitchen.
