Some Water Damage Questions...
Ok, so I am an idiot and I washed my phone...left it in a sweatshirt pocket, not dried mind you, just washed...got battery out, blow dried it for a while and it turned on thank god, it is working ok. Now the only issue I have is that it thinks it is charging all the time and it is making it run hot and the battery drains a lot faster. I have an extra batt and charger and I haven't even tried plugging it in to anything, so that isn't an issue. I replaced the batt logo with the charging lightning thing with the clock so its out of sight out of mind, now is there any way to disable the light on the enter button so it isn't continuously flashing?

Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
LOL!
Sorry...but its funny.. Anyhow..you blow dried it?? I dont think that is sufficient and gonna have some residual water still in there. I suggest remove the battery and letting it sit open preferably near a heat vent or on the dashboard of your car in the sun for like 5 to 6 hours so it gets everything out. Note: Battery does not need to be left like that. Try again after that and see if it helps |
Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
no dude, there is no residual water, it is all good, simply want to turn off the light...that is the only issue, this was thurs night it happened, took batt out and let the blow drier sit on it for like an hr at low heat, it worked fine, however the issue is the circle of light on the enter button flashing like it does when it is charging, just wondering if there is something i can do with advanced config or some other program to turn off that light in general....

Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
I'd venture it's not all good. You have a dangerous device in your pocket holding a potentially explosive lithium ion battery that could overheat and catch on fire, burning you and your house down.
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be a jerk about it, I know it comes across that way but this is a safety issue for you and your family. Don't take the risk. Bring it in, get it fixed, get it replaced, whatever you have to do. Yes, it's going to cost you because it's water damage. Better to get a new phone than turn off the charging light and pretend that it's safe. The fact of the matter is that your phone spent probably 20 minutes in soapy, electrolytic water with the battery attached. I'm floored that your screen still works, but it's safe to assume something in the charging circuitry was damaged. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium...y_requirements ..."[Li-Ion batteries] may explode if overheated or if charged to an excessively high voltage" |
Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
Put the phone in a zip lock bag with a large quantity of rice and let it sit for a few days.
The rice will draw all the moisture out of the phone and hopefully it will actually be dry and work properly for you. |
Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
The rice trick will work....
But a better solution is to go buy a bag of Silica Gel at your local arts and craft store (It's used for drying flowers) Make sure to wrap the phone well in paper towel so none of the crystals get into crevices. Put a decent layer in the bottom of a plastic container (tupperware?) and then place the towel wrapped phone in with it and put the lid on. Leave it for 3 or 4 days if it went through the entire wash cycle. This is the best way to dry out electronics in fact they put small bags of silica gel inside the packing of most electronic goods in case any moisture creeps into the product during shipping. But even if you dry it thoroughly it is quite likely that you fried the battery and some charger circuits. Drying will probably let you turn on the phone to reflash to stock for a return but it is rare that it will work 100% after a rinse cycle. |
Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
Ok, evidently there is a reason why this site is called ppc Geeks, you guys are entirely failing to realize what exactly my question is, the phone is completely and utterly dry, there is no problem with moisture, not anymore anyway, not a single one of you have even warranted a thank button, I guess lithium ion boy had a point, but the heat is coming from the phone itself, not the batt, much like when you use the phone as a modem, and I can only get the phone to last for like 5 or 6 hours now anyway, regardless it was not the point in question, every suggestion and comment thus far has been moot...so...back to my original question....does anyone know of a program like the one they used to have for the original touch that you can control all the lcds on the phone so I can simply turn off the flashing circle of light around the enter button, that is it, I do not want to hear about rice, silica gel, paper towels, dehumidifiers or anything else you crazy bastards come up with, just a program that will make the light stop shining....Thank You!

Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
I don't know of an app to control the LED circle except for nueLED, but that program isn't designed for our phones.
However, your phone will work now, but it will die within a few months. Eventually the corrosion will cause failure of major components. You're better off doing what you can to get the phone replaced. |
Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
I'm don't have any delusions as to how serious the damage is to my phone, I am just hoping it will hold out to Q1 of 10 and the HD2 or something comparable will be available for sprint. In the meantime I just want it to hold a charge as long as possible and the light flashing constantly can't be helping things in that regard. Thanks for the reply though, now we're getting somewhere in some way shape or form...

Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
file a claim with asurion. $100 just might get you a tp2.

Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
I dug up this app from my Mogul days called LED Killer... I'm not sure if it will help at all on the Touch Pro, but it just might. Use at your own risk, though. It can cause undesired behavior...

Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
It doesn't matter whether the phone is dry or not. Unless you gave the phone an extensive bath in distilled water, there is residue on the circuitry of the phone causing a short. That explains the heat and the LED staying lit. The damage is cumulative and will only get worse over time. The best you can do is get rid of the residue. Turning off the LED is eqivalent to putting a bandaid on a skin cancer to make it better.
Strongly recommend that you give the phone, sans battery, a nice bath in distilled water. Then shake as much water as possible off the phone, and put it in a baggie full of dessicant for 2 days out in the sunshine. As to the battery, if it was damaged from the water, you may not know it until it explodes in your pocket. Toss the battery and get a new one. If the distilled water treatment doesn't cure your phone problems, it is time to use your insurance, if you have a plan on the phone. |
Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
Aaaand this is exactly why the OP was complaining. He wants to know how to kill the LED's. He doesn't want us to lecture him on the water damage.

my wifes' tp went into the ocean, that l.e.d. stayed on hers and no getting rid of it. even when you took it off the charger, the light stayed solid white.

But it is not! The fact that the leds constantly report charging is proof that something is not right with your phone most likely there is moisture in one of your capacitors that "BLOW DRYING" is not going to help! Blowdrying only turns the moisture into vapor. Unless that vapor escapes from inside a sealed component like a capacitor all it's going to do is condense into water again once the water cools down! But since you know better than anyone I guess you don't need any help so good luck dude! |
Re: Some Water Damage Questions...
Black permanent marker? Also do the same fix for the check engine light on your car, and take out the buzzers in your smoke detectors, those pesky things always waking us up at night when the batteries die.
Seriously. I knew exactly what you were asking and honestly, if I thought the question was answerable I'd have either tried to answer it or moved along if I couldn't. But as a human being to a human being I couldn't move along, because someone I knew years ago died last week and I wanted to do the right thing by trying to explain that you might be putting yourself and your family at risk. I know it sounds weird, but it I do believe it is possible for something as small as a cell phone to cause a fire that can kill you. Maybe we should send your phone to Mythbusters and ask that question. I had an old cell phone that I plugged a brand new battery in once at night, came in the next morning and the phone was so hot I couldn't pick it up. I freaked out. What if I had left the apartment and left it there heating? I don't even want to think about it. And that place had in-ceiling sprinklers. Most don't. My best advice? If you can't afford a working TP until your contract discount comes up again, grab a less expensive smartphone from Ebay while you wait. I bought an old 700wx for maybe $50 awhile back just for that purpose, so I could limp along if anything happened to my Touch Pro. Yeah, it kinda sucks, but it's an option. The distilled water idea is actually a very cool one, but I'd remove the screen first since it's probably not the source of your problem and it's risky to get it wet again. But it sounds like you need the use of your phone, so soaking it in clean water for a day and then drying it out for a week or whatever is probably not an option. And of course there's a chance it could do more damage. I don't know if something like Fluorinert or mineral oil would displace water...as long as we're going pie eye in the sky here. Be kind of cool to have the world's first liquid-cooled cell phone, but it'll look like you wet your pants all the time which might be worse from a social ramification standpoint than just not answering your phone for awhile. I understand that it's the phone that is getting hot and not the battery. That is a good sign. But please do consider that the light is an indicator that the charging circuit is probably faulty, and the charging circuit with Li-ion is critical to the safety of the battery. that's why I said what I said. If your volume rocker switch stopped working, it'd be one thing, but you've got a clear indication here that there is a fault in a critical component of the phone. Either way, I hope you get it solved and I hope your phone is OK. I don't think anyone here meant to be a jerk about it, but don't call names and stuff, there's no point. If anything, take the advice, acknowledge it and say you're willing to take the risk and if anyone has any ideas you welcome them. You have to realize that part of it is that you never even acknowledged the potential safety issue in your first posts - in fact you said "out of sight, out of mind", which implies that you didn't even consider the safety ramifications of a cell phone battery/charging problem. It's water damaged goods now. I'd toss the battery that went into the wash, because lithium and water don't mix. The OP can even open up the device and blast the blow dryer at it more :) . If an internal part has residue from the soapy water, which is possible, rinsing the internals with distilled water or maybe even rubbing alcohol could help. I don't know how to tell that the inside of a device is dry, unless you actually open it up and meticulously dry all the internal parts. But that's just me. |
