Permanently disable data connection?

Is there a reg edit that will disable the data connection on my TP so that programs such as TF3D won't turn it on automagically? I have been contemplating doing away with my data connection as I am always in range of wifi, my average over the last 3 months was 400kb data usage.

You'd best do it from the Sprint side of things (data block); every time I see a complaint about massive overage charges it seems the poor person "tried to block data on the phone" but something ended up connecting in the background when they were traveling in outer Siberia and the roaming charges required taking out a home equity line of credit just to cover the interest.

I will pre-echo the common sentiment that to have a TP, the highest-end WM smartphone in Sprint's lineup, without a data plan is sort of like buying a car and taking the wheels off. Yes, you still have a car, but what's the point. :) I know, you said you never use it...surprising to me, but whatever works!

Verizon here, is there a way to data block with them? If so I will just do that. I really only use the phone for texting, I got a hell of a deal on the phone. I thought I might end up using the data for web and stuff but have not used it. Thanks to both posts.

Re: Permanently disable data connection?

VWZ im sure can block it.... however with the cab, you can just uninstall if you wanted to use your data connection...

if you use VZW to block it, now youll have to call them, if you ever wanna use your reg data again

Verizon will not block data to a TP, it is a required part of the plan for that phone (+ with a data block you cannot send/receive picture messages)

Hmm everybody says they will, I am going to ask when I go up there today to pay the bill. I don't use MMS so there isn't any point in having the data. Just text, and some of the PDA features of the phone.

Re: Permanently disable data connection?

i wondered that myself when i was posting my last response...

about the whole a data plan is required... now you may be able to block it through them, but they may make you keep the data plan on your statement...

and why cant he send pics via his wifi connection???

Modaco Nodata was no good, it doesn't seem to work on the verizon TP. As the TF3D weather and stock tabs were able to activate the data connection automatically.

All cell providers block the connections to their picmail servers to IPs on their network. That way they don't get spammers using their network as a relay...

So he won't be able to do MMS unless he is actually on a data connection from his provider.

Although in his case lack of MMS isn't an issue.

did you run the application? it's not just a reg to install with a cab, rather its an application to control your connections.

AH Thanks I forgot to run the app. Went to Verizon to get my girlfriend a new phone this afternoon. They refused to turn off my data, the rep said that the phone would become non-functional without it. BIGGEST BULL**** LIE EVER!

I agree that the data plan can be handy. For my needs wireless at a coffee shop, with a nice iced tea, works great. Maybe that's where my caffeine habit came from.

Re: Permanently disable data connection?

VZN WILL NOT turn off data on any phones bought after Jan 1 of this year. i had a 6800 before this without data and when i bought the TP in feb they would not connect the phone without a data plan. i talked to 4 or 5 different reps/techs and none of them would budge on it. you can stop using data with the nodata cab but you are still going to have to pay for the data plan.

any time. trust me, i did everything i could to NOT pay that extra $30 a month. it sucks but i have found that i use the data more than i thought. i dont use $30 worth but when i need it it is nice to have.

if your looking for confirmation, Mylt1's earlier post is correct, VZW wont allow you to have the TP without data, thats why i switched to Sprint (besides it being $275 a month cheaper) when i used my Touch on V$W, i tried to switch to my Q as i was going camping for a weekend, and they said i had to add the data plan. so yea, either switch providers, or start collecting cans....

That's what I figured when I posted that.

I don't really see that as a problem however, it pretty silly to own a TP & NOT have a data connection anyway.

Re: Permanently disable data connection?

Here a few thoughts...
1) Delete the cellular wireless account,
2) Change the dial # to something else instead of 777
3) Add something on user name and password so it would NEVER authorized.

I haven't tried any of those, but when the time comes. I will cut off my data plan and try one of those and see. Let me know the result if you tried those methods.

you also need to delete the HTCguardian file (I think that's what it's called) from Windows startup or it will recreate the data connection at every restart.
