Using your TP as your computer...suggestions & tips?
 

So very soon, I will be moving, and when this happens, I will no longer have access to a computer. My TP will be my lifeblood.

1.)Are there any programs I should install on my TP that can only be installed via PC? (Windows Mobile Device Center)

2.)In case I find a program after I move that is .EXE only, is there any way at all to run those on Windows Mobile?

3.)Most ROMs can be downloaded on the phone then flashed via SD card correct? In case I take the plunge and get rid of my stock ;)

4.)-Please- suggest some programs for me to use...I just bought a TV out cable in anticipation of the move. I plan on using skyfire to watch streaming video (Bleach/Narutoget.com ftw!!), but it can be choppy at times, so anything better than skyfire for that purpose?


You guys have NO idea how grateful I would be for your help! I'll hand out thanks like crazy, and maybe even some nudes :D

1. i have never needed to install a program from the pc besides .net 3.5 but there is a cab for that

i actually had to use my tp as my computer the other day when i tore my room apart waiting for a new desk it wasnt that bad. only thing i needed computer for was rearranging files on my sd card but that was because i wanted to do it easier.

lol, mostly multimedia stuff. I plan on watching tons of vids and listening to tons of music. What are your favorite music/video players? I currently would use Coreplayer for both.

well im no help for that. i use wmplayer for music as im dont use music or videos on my phone. for videos i mostly use the youtube app....sorry :(

1.) None that I can suggest unless you have any that you regularly install via AS.

2.) Not that I know of. Good thing there's CABs of almost everything.

3.) You're looking at epic download times, but yes.

4.) I was neve3r a big video hoor, but I always just put up with Skyfire. Youtube app too.

I used my TP as a computer for 5 months. It honestly didn't hurt that bad either.

Well basically what I want to get out of this thread is, I want an app for EVERYTHING I could possible do or want to do...and obviously if a program doesn't have a cab, i need to install it before the move.



How big are ROMs usually? Only like 30-ish MBs right?

I <3 video...hence the reason I bought the TVOUT cable. If having access to streaming video on the net wasn't enough, I er...bought lots of shows in the past 2 weeks :mrgreen: Heroes, Rescue Me, True Blood, etc...Ultimate Fighter FTW!

Also have tons of Ebooks ^^, and even have all Pimsleur languages, (holy crap learning a new language is fun. Japanese woot).

I think I'm going to be set for a while...hopefully long enough to hold me over till I decide on what kind of PC i want.

So I think actually right now is my last chance to get any more programs...anyone have a suggestion!?

haha i only did this once because my computer wouldnt let me download a rom. took awhile and i hate to prop it up against my fan

More like 100MB+, about 112MB avg for most ROMs here

roms i usually get are around 80mbs the new stock rom for alltel was 127ish or a little less. thats the one i had to download with my phone and it seemed to take forever.

Well, what's the norm for you guys' connection speed? I wmtorrented a 700MB vid once and it finished overnight, average speed was like anywhere from 100-150 kb/s. (I think, may have just been around 100.)

Well I don't really know. I've only been in the apartment one time before, I'll know when I move in.

I'm pretty sure it's maxed out. It's a good-sized college town (Eastern Illinois) so I imagine sprint would make sure to have good service there.

Although, I may end up using wi-fi anyways. I'm right across from the school, and it's a huge apartment complex so I may be able to hitch a ride somewhere >:]

wifi would be a lot better. for me when i was at my aunt and uncles i HAD to use wifi. it was either wifi of 1x for downloading data :(
also it doesnt matter with unlimited data , unless you dont?, but you wont be using your data with wifi

Naw I have unlimited data, but I plan on torrenting frequently ^_^

Also, I believe I have a proggy for discovering WEP keys :twisted: ...won't know until I try it. Even if it doesn't work, I'm sure plenty of idiots at the complex will have unencrypted internet :D The college bastards probably only use it for Myspace anyways haha.

FYI if you want a cab for anything that only has a PC installer, just install the EXE on your PC when your phone isn't connected via activesync. It will say "the app will be installed when you next connect." Don't connect. Use Explorer to go into the Activesync folder and there will be the cab in there (the location varies based on the program; sometimes it's in a subfolder, sometimes it's not). Great way to get cabs of programs that rely on annoying PC-based installers, though in this day and age most developers seem to understand that most of us just want the cabs so we can store them on a memory card in case of a problem and reinstall quickly.

sweet aweosme info haus. ill keep that in mind but i have only installed one program that needed the computer and that was .net 3.5 but with custom roms thats usually already installed.

You may be able to extract the *.cab file out of the *.exe with Pocket RAR. If you meant running Ix86 programs, that's possible with an installation of Windows 95 on a Bochs installation, but it will be very slow. If you have DOS applications you need to run, you can use the mobile version of DOSBox.

I would also suggest purchasing a bluetooth keyboard since you intend on your PPC being your primary computing unit. Also, purchase the OEM headphone/usb adapter if you do not have one. I would also recommend purchasing an Innocell 2000mAh extended battery for extended use. With this setup, once you got home all you would need to do is plug in 1 wire and partner with your keyboard and you would have a fully usable "desktop" computer.

lol, yea my modem got fried, and there are two connections around me, so connected to those...and when those went down, i connected to one of the secure ones around me (change your password people)

thats why you need web video downloader on your TP (hint, you can download pron onto your tp) for those times when the girlie is pissed off or away for the weekend

No, not lying about it, I've pulled cabs for a few programs that way back in the day, though as I mentioned developers are better about creating cabs nowadays, particularly when you can install and configure on a smartphone pretty easily. I haven't had to pull that trick in a long time. But I'm more anal than your gf about what gets installed on my mega-stable XP computer, so I'm not about to let some two-bit WM developer force me to install something on the PC when it only needs to run on my TP. So I use my backup laptop as the whipping boy, grab the files and run.

I think you're going to miss having a PC. I even use the Redfly (great battery life, bright screen, etc.) but I can't stand the weak graphics and processor on the TP after awhile. I think in a few months you'll have a netbook or something (if you even make it that long). :)

Hehe, np. I am going to miss having a PC. but right now it's not a choice, it's a circumstantial thing. Hopefully I'll be able to get a sweet desktop in the next few months!

one thing i would do if i were you would be to import all my bookmarks from my pc to the phone. that way you won't be struggling to find where you normally go. and get a fan for your phone, cause if you plan on actually using it, its going to overheat and die a lot lol

I meant to ask you guys about this. That one night I did run WMtorrent nonstop, phone died like 3 friggin times...while plugged into the wall!!

I guess all that data was too much. Anyone else experience this?

Last time I was streaming true blood I did the bag of ice thing. works pretty well. I also read somewhere else on forums that cutting little spots out of the back cover helps tremendously .
