I've never tried the gmail java app, but have you tried Iris Browser? Since it uses Webkit, Google thinks your using an iphone, so you get all gmail features. GDocs and Photo look pretty good on it too.

well, I have a few gmail's (shhhh)
and I use the java to log into the one that gets all my mail dumped to it.
that way I can search for old mail without digging through different accounts.
and it's way too bloated to download all of it to the phone via imap
