Custom ROM Comparison Table

I am a new TP owner and I've been studying all the ROMs available for over a week now and am in a tizzy as to how to decide which would be best for me.

Also, in spite of there being several how-to guides, the terminology and acronyms are rarely defined. I suggest the compilation of a glossary of acronyms, terms, and method be stickied for new users.

Furthermore, on the topic of ROM selection, I suggest some sort of master comparison table be assembled so that new and novice users may find it easier to select the ROM that is right for them. Instead of leaving the matter to a simple popularity contest (if one were to sort the forum by the number of views or replies), a more objective and standard table for comparison could be created, showing actual component features, modifications, and performance benchmarks among the different builds.

A table like this would foster greater competition and development throughout the community.

Re: Custon ROM Comparison Table

If the actual data fields could be decided on (what details to compare), each ROM developer could easily fill in those details rather quickly, as opposed to one person just doing the entire thing on his or her own.

If I had any idea as to what to compare, I would get the ball rolling, but I have no clue as to where to start.

As far as which ROM and comparing, you will probably have to start flashing them yourself. Because the "Perfect Rom" isn't out there. But the "Perfect for me ROM" is. It's a personal choice. I can recommend the SSK 2.4 ROM or the SsS one, both are great "for me" ROMs. I am currently using the SSK. But after a couple flashes (I have now done over 20) it gets real easy. And you can load up the TP like you want in less than a half hour. So get out there and flash away.

The ONLY way to make a perfect rom is to use a kitchen and build it yourself...

There are many GREAT roms out there....But there will always be one thing missing or added that you don't like.

What I suggest is to try all of the roms that have kitchens to go with them...Try them out and if the rom is close to what you want, download the kitchen and tweak accordingly.

rheyre all correct about the perfect rom. try them all for a few days and see what you like and dont like about each one. its kinda like dating, except the rom doesnt keep calling you asking if youve been flashing other roms. once you find the right rom youll know it.

Its scary, but have faith...its fun, easy, and even when you think you've bricked the phone...the tri-color screen means you can always go back :) Even when active sync doesn't pop-up, just run the ruu and it will work.

why do people continually start threads like this? Another similar thread was started today even and was moved to the main HTC Touch Pro forum. Its amazing...

Which ROM is the best? I think that thread right there pretty much sums things up.

A table like this would foster greater competition and development throughout the community.

Reasons why you're suggestion may not fit well:

1. No offense, but a new and novice user shouldn't flash a ROM.....

It's a risk, and involves trust of a programmer you have never met. The popularity contest is actually not a bad place to start if you choose to be risky - If thousands of ppl have tried the ROM you might consider that if any bugs exist you'll know before you flash!

If you can't understand the terminology, read until you do. It's a very small effort in relation to the effort put forth by the author using this terminology.

2. I am very grateful to the many contributors of this forum, and gladly support the work of which I have benefited. It would be a little patronizing to expect them to cater to such a request after the time consuming work they put into these ROMS.

3. Each ROM that is released usually has many in depth reviews, I trust them more than I would some table that would be composed by the author of a ROM....

But in response to the real question: Which ROM is Best??? In fairness to all developers I have not tried them all, but I am currently favoring HERM NRG ROM (a popular one...)

Re: Custom ROM Comparison Table

yep... agreed 100%.. Like any of my other impulses.. eating/(not)sleeping/computing.. ROM Flashing has become a habit... There definitely is NOT a perfect ROM across the board.. there will always be things you wish you could change etc. For me EnergyROM is a great place to start.. i've been through several other ROMs.. i hated some big time, some were a little too bare, others brought wayyy too much to the party. EnergyROM seems to have a nice mix of speed/apps/eye-candy that suits my taste.. The battery seems to resent me a bit for this choice, but hey?

I think my next step, once i have a little more free time, will be focusing on the APPs/SIPs etc. I would like to take a stable, fast ROM and figure out what apps/tweaks i want to apply to it. Then i *might* get into using my own kitchen. I don't really want my handiwork being the reason i just MMSd a comprimising photo to all my friends/family/loved ones, so im sticking to the basics for now.

Overall, it is what it is.. play around with it! If you don't want to flash your phone more than 2-5 times... Don't flash it at all!! I don't mean you'll be having to flash your phone 5 times a day just to make a call, but you will need to try out some flavors, and then every week or couple of weeks take a look at what's out there currently.

Enjoy!
