Swapped my TP for the first time

I was having some issues with my touch pro (purchased mid to late october 2008 including overheating, wobbly slider, and freezing overnight so I decided to head to my local store to get it swapped out.

The process was easy, although reflashing rom, radio, and relocking took longer than I though because my original sync cable is completely non functional.

I have to say upon careful inspection, the difference is night and day. The lower button and scroll wheel area is much darker on the new phone for whatever reason. It makes the front of the phone look two tone. THe display is softer and has a more yellowish tint which I don't mind because it's easier on my eyes. The biggest difference was the slider. It is MILES better than my original. I didn't even realize how bad my original got.

I'm going to be doing some testing over the next few days, and although there have been multiple threads discussing build quality, my overall point is that if you have a TP from one of the initial build dates, just go ahead and get it swapped.

Funny, I had them order me a replacement & my build date is like February something. I'm having the same issues as you were.

I should have mention that I haven't tried overnight charging or any heavy data usage yet, so the newer build date might not have fixed these but like I said, I will report back in a few days of heavy use.

Re: Swapped my TP for the first time

i just had mine replaced as well. i some how bent the screen (probably from keeping it in my pocket all the time) to the point that the screen would just turn off and on indefinitely.

my replacement was obviously a refurb. the buttons on the keyboard already had wear and the phone buttons on this one sticks up enough to put my finger nail in between it and the chrome bezel. i was not happy about this but i don't care enough to get it exchanged again. also considering they didn't charge me for this one even though i was my fault the screen broke. i ws very happy about that BTW.
now to my point... the keyboard slide is MUCH better on this one as well.

My first one from october still works... bit the phone end has metal showing at the plug... whatever though. Having hd 6 TPs means I have plenty of backup cables. My phones seem to die way faster than the cables can.

on number 6 (4 brand new ones and 2 refurb ones including the newest one) wonder how long this one will last.

2 had keyboard faliures
1 the screen literally melted inside
2 had the rainbow effect on the screen.

funny you mention this... I just broke my old TP and went through my Sprint insurance to get a replacement. I was dreading it, I didn't want a refurb but I had no phone. I went online and filed a claim @ 3pm Monday. Tuesday evening I came home to a package from Asurion for me! I opened it and couldn't believe they sent me a BRAND NEW TP. Anyway, the point of this is that the new one is MILES better than my old one. It gets better service, much better battery life (i'm still using my old battery), and feels a billion times better.

SWEET.

I'm still on my original phone. Got it back in November and it still looks and works great. Slide works perfectly. Still has the original stock rom with a 9/12/08 date! I want to try different roms but I'm just lazy I guess. I have tried several different radios and updated some of the graphics though!

1 replacement out of 3 TP, and it was my original.. complete keyboard failure.. my other 2 are running strong though..

i love the suggestion from the OP, that just because of a build date means you have to turn in your PRO, how bout waiting till something goes wrong for someone else OP lol

Still have original (Nov 2008 ) . Works fine. Some scratches and dents but that's my fault not a defect of the phone.

Nothing really went wrong with mine. They were all problems that I could have easily lived with till my upgrade in November. I just decided to swap it out and see if the newer builds were any better. It's not really a hassle for me since I use Exchange for PIM backup, and keep my favorite cabs and ROM on my mircoSD card. It took me all of 20 minutes to get back up and running. If you have the opportunity, you might be surprised at how nice the newer build dates work. If it's a free swap and you're not entirely satisfied with your original, swap it out.

Question to those who got refurbs from Sprint. Does the refurb come with a new screen protector? I have an original TP and my hw keyboard is going out constantly, today I think it finally decided to die completely. Going to have to flash the stock ROM back on before I head into the store tomorrow but they already told me they can only get me a refurb not a new one. Have had absolutely no issues with this phone until the keyboard started randomly going out last month. Hopefully I don't have to go through multiple refurbs like others I have read on here did to get one that wasn't full of physical damage. I have never dropped the phone or damaged it at all so the refurb better be in as good of condition as mine is and with a working keyboard of course

I'll be getting my first replacement hopefully by tomorrow, I'm assuming the Sprint store already got it and is being lazy about calling me. Chrome finally started cracking (no drops, it was in that set of ESNs that had the chrome issue).

they replaced my keyboard instead of me getting a new phone, thats way better imo cause if it can be fixed and the rest is good, screww a referb.

i still have my original. it's still in pretty good shape. i do have some very small cracks in my chrome and tried to get it replaced, but the CC rep transferred me to HTC. Too much of a hassle. Eventually, I will swap it for a replacement!!!

Re: Swapped my TP for the first time

I just got my second TP after having the 1st since November 08. My touch screen stopped working and my usb was kinda going bad. My replacement is brand new and has a March 09 build date and I can not tell ANY difference from my first one.

This is a relief after having so many moguls I lost count.

lol and now number 7 the "new" one they sent me as of htis morning wouldnt turn on. Took the old broken one out and it turned on with no issues. Got mad called yelled at sprint they sent a brand new one plus noted on my account and sent me in writing I will be getting a tp2 for free aka credit my account back for hte purchase when I upgrade. But now its working.. kind of keeps freezing up still gonna exchange it. Hope the tp2 comes soon. Maybe will try the hero out when it comes out. oh and all my tp's are using stock roms.

Re: Swapped my TP for the first time

OP here. I'm glad to report that the heat issue has been greatly reduced with the new build. Keybopard delay seems less running the same ROM and radio as before. Slider is more solid now. Definitely worth the swap.

And for the previous poster who commented about frivolous claims, I used my $150 upgrade credit and paid $300 for a phone that I expect to be in good working condition upon arrival. It's not Sprint's fault, but if you knew anything about how returns work, Sprint gets credit for the return and they can resell it as refurb once problems are fixed.

My cable is out right now, should I not call them and tell them it's broken because it might cost them gas to drive a truck over?

If sprint was losing a terrible amount of money on replacements, they would stop doing it. There are a lot of people more qualified than you and I who decide how these programs work and how to make the company profitable.
